johnny
I’ll get the hobbit trilogy when it’s on sale. LOTR is a day one buy though.
TheLeon
I'm not in a huge rush to upgrade. I probably won't feel the need to start buying 4K disks until I get a better TV. Mine barely counts as 4K.

CastlevaniaNut18
I just watched these on blu-ray a few months ago. I’m not really feeling the need for an upgrade. They did hold up quite well, though.
SoberChef
Wonder if Peter Jackson will redo the orcs from the Hobbit trilogy & utilize the practical ones in lieu of CGI!?

number305
LOTR and the Hobbit already pretty much take up an entire shelf for me. But yeah I'll have to get these eventually. I have pretty much stopped buying physical discs but LOTR will get another dip from me. The hobbit can rot.

TwinIon
I will be waiting for reviews before buying. I rewatched LOTR recently and they look good, but I worry what a 4K transfer might do. It's easy to imagine a lot of the CGI not holding up very well in 4K.

That's not very clear. Quote Additionally, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first The Lord of the Rings film, a newly remastered Blu-ray trilogy of The Lord of the Rings films will be available in the Fall of 2021, also including the theatrical and extended versions. Maybe that means in 2021 they'll release a remaster of the regular Blu Ray?
johnny
Reading that LOTR trilogy is among the best 4K releases, period. Not surprised. Already have mine preordered.
GeneticBlueprint
They're still separating each movie out to two fucking discs good christ that is irritating. Understandable on DVD. Not on Blu ray.
GeneticBlueprint
Just popped it in to watch the beginning sequence of Fellowship. These look incredible. Moreso than any other movie I've seen on 4k from the 2000s era. Just incredible.

SoberChef
Have come to appreciate this guys reviews. He's knowledgeable about film, the processes behind it, audio & video stuff, etc. He doesn't do a number or grade score, just a solid & thorough review of all aspects. TL;DR is that this is the introductory version of the collection and down the road they will have a full 6 film version coming out. I shall wait & see what that all entails before finally deciding which version to snag. IF Jackson & WETA can retool the Hobbit Films in a way that makes them better & fixes the CGI and all that, then I may snag that edition next year. I also like that his “scale” is basically buy, buy when on sale, and skip if you have the blu ray.
silentbob
I still need to watch The Hobbit series. I’ve never been a huge fan of LOTR series but I am a sucker for a good 4K picture and especially a standout Atmos track. If I see it cheap one day, I might get it

I really want the LotT 4K. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Hobbit movies but I didn’t hate them. So I wouldn’t mind skipping them. But IF Jackson reworks them and the CGI in some way. Then I’d def wait to see how that turns out to get the full 6 movie collection.

GeneticBlueprint
@SimpleG I stand corrected. Thanks. Though it does make me wonder the difference in quality between the theatrical and extended versions then since the theatrical fit on one disc and you're only adding an additional ~30 min on Fellowship for example. It’s closer to 50 mins with credits. Being a flagship film I am sure they wanted it to be top tier and this was the only way to do it.
