SilentWorld
I'm not sure what I want more. Donald Trump to live long enough to see himself lose the election and his business empire collapse around him, leaving him to spend the rest of his life a broke, jaded, lonely old man, or Donald Trump to die shortly after leaving office, leaving Melania to spend the rest of her days a broke, jaded, lonely old widow. I'm betting he continues to do his rallies, except charging admission now since he can't use the clout of the federal government to rip off towns. That's if the Justice Department doesn't sack up and keep his crooked ass in court.

I'm not sure what will happen but it's tough for me to think that his rallies will be nearly as popular when it becomes apparent that Trumpism is responsible for decimating the Republican party. I'm almost certain his ability to publicize himself will be severely curtailed almost immediately after leaving office. I foresee Fox News cutting off almost all their Trump coverage immediately after he leaves office and I would guess that he gets booted off the major social networks (Twitter, Facebook, etc) shortly after he leaves office as well. (this is all asssuming the election goes as the polls are indicating and the GOP isn't able to pull off some major election shenanigans). Trump is a product of populism. If he loses...the message won't be of his failure due to policy..it will be because the election was stolen and he's the victim. As the Boomers die off and GOP power falters....younger populist Republicans will cling to that narrative with every fiber of their being....they aren't going to have a come to jesus moment where they realize the failures of their party.....it will be someone elses fault. I literally have relatives who have taken advantage of disability to not work (1 took a whole year off and went camping and 4 wheeling after suffering back problems at work) who will openly criticize welfare moms. Several of my aunts who never had any interest in politics at all actually went to every Trump rally in Minnesota.

This is fact. This is how most people work, with a heavy dose of comfortable hypocrisy that in no way keeps them up at night.
b_m_b_m_b_m
Trump isn't a product of populism, he's the inevitable outcome of the indifferent pro-wealthy and overt white supremacist GOP playbook that's been in vogue since Goldwater and the GOP takeover of the Southern white elite. He isn't even a good populist. I do think if he ran closer to Tucker Carlson's bs he probably would be re-elected, but he's too dumb to realize it. Our one saving grace is that these people are largely unimpressive, mediocre rich dudes who earned nothing that wasn't given to them and thus are so out of touch with reality they can't keep up the charade because they don't believe it. This largely includes Tucker, though he's a better actor than the rest of them. Tuckers schtick doesn't work in the face of the pandemic either, it's worth noting what he is putting on TV! ort
Can you imagine how much the right wingers would HATE Melania if she was the wife of a Democrat? Holy shit, it would be epic. She's literally everything they hate wrapped up with a bow on top of it... beyond being hot or whatever (so not my type).

Several of my aunts who never had any interest in politics at all actually went to every Trump rally in Minnesota. You're right -- there are going to be many Trump supporters that aren't going to easily move on, but that's not really my point. I think the powers that be will abandon him completely. His supporters are going to find him silenced in mainstream media (including Fox News) and mainstream social media networks will likely give him the boot as well. Sure he'll still be able to get his message out on alternative networks, he'll still have supporters, and occasionally he'll do or say something particularly wild that will get noted on mainstream media, but that won't be enough for him to be the head of a major political movement the way he is now. Alex Jones has rabid supporters as well, and honestly, I'm doubting that Trump (assuming he is booted out of office) will even be able to have as much of a reach and influence as Jones. edit: Basically here's my hypothetical. We fast forward 2 years into the future, it's October 2022 and Trump has been out of office for 21 months. Twitter kicked him off their service in March 2021. Fox News has almost completely shut him out, so has every other mainstream news outlet. If he's off Twitter and the media is largely ignoring him, how does he continue to publicize himself? Knowing nothing of the minds of Trump's supporters, would they listen to, for example, a Trump podcast or radio show? Would Trump even have the ambition and discipline to create something like that to get his message out? I just have serious doubts that Trump would be capable of keeping himself as the head of a political movement without all the free publicity he got in 2015/2016 (and then the free publicity due to serving as president). It's not like he has a history of being the leader of any major (or even minor) political movements prior to 2015.
