We spoke to Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida about the game's in-development PC version.

Quote

While Yoshida is unable to share when the PC version of FFXVI will be released, he says the team is in the last stages of optimization.

"In terms of where we are in development currently, we're trying to figure out the final stages of optimization right now," Yoshida tells me through a translator.

"When we can release the PC version might be dependent on that – the system requirements and specifications for PC that players will need, so we're trying to figure that out. Naturally, [the PC specifications] are looking to be somewhat high."

He says players can rest assured, though, that development on the PC version of FFXVI is going smoothly, but, "In terms of when it's going to come out or when we can announce it, I'd like to ask for more time on that."

Yoshida tells me before FFXVI releases on PC, the team will do its best to announce the best specifications and requirements ahead of time so players can determine if the game will run on their PCs.

"And to do that, we're looking to release a demo for the PC version as well," he adds. "Again, we can't really talk about too much in terms of details of when it's going to come out – I think in a little bit more time we'll be in a better place to announce things. But one thing's for sure: It won't be too distant in the future; it won't be a year, it won't be two years, it will probably be shorter than that, so stay tuned."

I forget what your thoughts were on 16. Like it?

7/10. It was K. Got very boring. Devs forgot they weren't making an MMO. Some bosses are too easy and take too long to kill, which is like the worst combination. Very let down by the ending. Let down by the Odin boss. The Kaiju fights are cool but lack variety. Bad Performance mode. Awful motion blur at launch. Great performances from the actors. I think Ben Starr should have won best VA or whatever it was in TGA. Solid OST. Actually disappointed the game pretty much dropped the Game of Thrones act and became pretty standard FF stuff about half-way thru. The hunt side missions have the best fights. Still no HD towns lol.

tldr is was good, got boring, had some tech issues

I turned motion blur off right when I restarted. Ok, I agree with your thoughts.

Idk. I'm making great progress in 16 and I still haven't gotten to a place where it goes down hill. I don't recall when it happens but so far this has been an excellent game. I'm playing it over Rebirth that's how much I'm enjoying it.

That statement sounds more like a winter release than a Summer release, but we will see. I hope it comes out Summer as it would make me feel more confident about early next year for Rebirth. I hope they really beef it up for pc like they did with FF16. Either way looking forward to it and seeing current gen FF without iq/frame rate limits.

Ah, I didn't know that. I'd been hoping for a DLC that adds more to the ending but oh well. I don't have much interest DLC that doesn't have an impact on the main story.

Steam reviews are crying that performance sucks on the demo

I have the best video card available right now so it’s native 4k w/DLAA locked at 120fps for me. But, that’s still not really common with graphically demanding games, even with frame gen.

Cut scenes are locked to 30fps even though they’re real time, so maybe that’s what they’re complaining about.

EDIT: I just googled and people are mostly complaining about the 30fps cutscenes, and using FSR3’s frame gen seems to cause frame time issues. But people with GTX 1070s are pulling 50ish fps on ultra at 1080p, so

Gotcha. I was buying it regardless, I have a 3080 so it will definitely run well enough even if it has shit optimization.

Was hoping to get a new CPU, disappointed Zen 5 seems to be more of an side-grade than a true upgrade over Zen 4 (at least thus far)

Most complaints (or "crying" if you're smug) are indeed due to the weird 30 FPS lock on cutscenes (which is hyper jarring due to both a drop from 120 FPS or higher and the extreme frequency of cutscenes) and a weird issue (I guess with frame gen? Haven't touched it since the demo came out a few days ago) where every time the camera cuts there's a weird ass stutter, even in the 30 FPS cutscenes, which only adds to the feeling of jank.

If they iron out that stutter it'll be mostly fine, if they uncap the FPS in cutscenes, it'll be great.

I see what some of the complaints were about. The game was completely unplayable for me until I updated my GPU driver. I'd get good FPS but stuttering was out of control, game would completely freeze up for 2-3 seconds after dodging or using Eikon abilities.

After I updated I get a solid 120fps on max settings and no stuttering.

Square Enix shared a patch for the Final Fantasy XVI PC demo that fixes a number of issues with its graphics and makes some enemies appear.

Quote

When the Final Fantasy XVI PC demo launched on Steam and Epic Games Store, it also included a number of issues, and now a patch is here to fix them. Ten major problems are remedied in the update, with some of the biggest ones tied enemy appearances and issues with graphics. However, Square Enix noted this doesn’t address the stuttering problems, which will be fixed in a later update.

Many of the issues involve the way Final Fantasy XVI looks on a PC, with graphics and appearances affected by a number of elements. The 1.01 patch affected Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) Xe Super Sampling (XeSS) to keep it from looking blurry. Previously, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) rendering also wasn’t working as intended, making the game look blurry. Other loading and tearing issues will be resolved. Also, after the update you can change the Dynamic Resolution in the options menu.

Here are the patch notes for the Final Fantasy XVI demo 1.01 update:

Improvements have been made to DLSS, FSR, and XeSS quality. This should help to alleviate various graphical issues such as blurring (DLSS/XeSS) and pixelation (FSR).

The following issues have also been addressed:

  • Dynamic Resolution being locked on the lowest setting.
  • Enemies not appearing properly in certain battle content.
  • Graphics not displaying properly on certain stages.
  • Graphical tearing in certain instances when using borderless screen mode.
  • SFX not playing properly under certain conditions.
  • UI not displaying properly under certain conditions.
  • Screen resolution changing under certain conditions.
  • Rare instances of GPU crashes.
  • Other minor issues.

Oh, this makes me wonder if I wasn’t having performance issues because I wasn’t running it in borderless and using “full screen” like a non-weirdo

Something was definitely broken before this patch, I tried messing with every single setting including borderless/fullscreen/windowed and got crazy stuttering no matter what.

New driver fixed the issue but it's not like I was using ancient drivers I updated them when Shadow of the erdtree came out. I'm also fairly certain the first time I launched the game it didn't do a shader compilation so that could have been the issue too.

It definitely did a shader compilation for me
