The MC really should talk. It is such damn shame.

yeah, so far there is no real story happening. No idea who the MC is what the MC is about, why the MC is doing anything. The bosses are just “I’m here, let’s fight” and for me at least everything has just been handed to the MC as opposed to being discovered or earned via combat. There’s just nothing so far. but unlike a souls game there doesn’t seem to be a reason for anyone to be anywhere. Nothing has happened and nothing will happen if we didn’t press up on the left stick.

So far, to me, Wo Long feels like an extension of Nioh in a good way - more dynamic, more additions in combat, etc. Those reviews feel off base to me, probably mostly associated with its difficulty and some graphics jank. Game is great so far, I mean, I'm playing it in lieu of Wukong since Wo Long seems better to me. :p

Wo Long's combat was just awesome to me as all of Team Ninja's games. That's what shines for me Team Ninja soulslikes. The gameplay. I won Nioh and Nioh 2 but never beat either and they are both on my list as is that other Team Ninja action game.

I guess this is spoilers? You can feel safe opening it, but if anyone doesn't want the prologue spoiled, don't open it.

Spoiler

Well, I am almost positive our character is the reincarnation of Wukong or is somehow just actually Wukong. What I really hope happens is that our character ends up speaking after he gets his six senses back. It would still have been way cooler if our character was smack talking this whole time tho, like Wukong does in the start.

Anyway, the story is just a device to deliver us cool set pieces and epic moments. And it sure is a shame I have never read Journey to the West. I wouldn't be surprised to find out there is a lot more story happening if I had context. And the story is just as simple as can be. You are the destined one who must reclaim the 6 McGuffins to fulfill your destiny. That's pretty much it. The MC is doing this because it is a path to power and strength. Prolly because it is a path to immortality. I don't mind the story being so absent because there are some very cool set pieces. The Secret Area in Chapter 2 is hella rad and stuff like that more than makes up for a lacking plot. And for me, I feel that Wukong is on par with DS1, BB, and ER in terms of storytelling. And that is because I never read the items or even tried to piece together a story for those games. I honestly just don't care. And there is a bunch of lore in the journal section. Maybe it has the story you are looking for. I just use it to know if I have found all the bosses in a chapter.

Agreed - big Team Ninja fan. I thought the company was screwed after Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki left after Ninja Gaiden 2 and then Ninja Gaiden 3 came out without his involvement and was uniformly terrible. And when they try to do story heavy games like Metroid: Other M and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, their games end up being pretty bad (not necessarily the gameplay, but the overall game).

But Nioh 1 was excellent and I'm having a good time with Wo Long so far. I assume Nioh 2 is also great if it's anything like Nioh 1. Rise of the Ronin seems like an evolution of those three games, bringing in a semi-open world, etc. But of the four games, only Wo Long takes place in China, giving it the closest feel to Wukong. But yeah, Team Ninja weathered the loss of Itagaki and seems to still have it, arguably better than ever.

I've heard that Nioh 2 is actually BETTER than the first game and is seen as the pinnacle of current Team Ninja's output. ROTR is it's mosyt ambitious game and their first attempt at an open world. It succeeds for the most part and is a a great preview of what's to come from these guys. ROTR was financially successful so I'm sure we'll get a follow up.

I better get through at least Wo Long and Rise of the Ronin then before their next game comes out. Ideally would like to Nioh 2 in as well, but holy shit Nioh games are long. Clocked over 100 hours to complete the first game. Wo Long is like 40 hours by comparison thank God. :p

I mean, what's he missing out on? The best parts are the ridiculous bits about the main character and their deep, close personal relationship to CHAOS.

It's like watching the porn in a porn game and never playing it.

And the gameplay is fun. At least it is for me. I love using a games provided tools to dominate bosses while going toe-to-toe with them (not using ranged or hit and run). I like getting op and being busted.

I would definitely not play a porn game and just watch the porn though. :p And why wouldn't I play their non-story heavy games first before this if this is a bad game otherwise (outside of gameplay I mean)?

I don't know what games are what and which one you are calling bad, but play SoP. It's great. 10/10. Will have fun. Don't waste time on the others.

I played that for an hour and dropped it like a hot potato. 2/10

I got like 60 out of Wo Long but I played all of the DLC and did all of the side missions I could find.

I mean, universal consensus is Nioh 1/Nioh 2/Wo Long/Rise of the Ronin >>>> SoP. That's what I mean by calling it bad. It would seem like the inverse is true - play the others and avoid SoP. :p I'll definitely keep it in mind since the gameplay is Team Ninja gameplay though. That being said, SoP looks like a very stupid game to play outside of combat.

Ah, right, the DLC, etc. would extend things. I'll probably hit 60 hours as well, still a lot less than my 110 hours into Nioh 1 though.

except there is no story. We are just being delivered the set pieces. lol

I saw the cutscene, but the MC really wasn’t the focus. I thought maybe the old money’s ramblings was more for the kids or something. lol

It’s like there was cut content between that scene and the peach. lol

There's a plot. Collect the 6 things cuz Destiny. That's pretty much a standard experience across this style of game, as I said.

Stutters/lag out the wazoo in chapters 2 and 3 and I have died because of it. It can feel very rough.

IGN noted in their review that most of the bugs they experienced were after chapter 2. The reviewer said due to the embargo they weren’t allowed to talk about any of it. I’m guessing what you’re experiencing is why that embargo was in place :p

though we only know or assume “because destiny” because the menus constantly refer to the player character as the “destined one”. lol

is he the destined on by birth and prophecy? Or because this is technically the past and so we already know the outcome? Did he need to be trained or did he just need to become of age?

Maybe the native audience doesn’t need all that. It’s common knowledge. Like how I wouldn’t need to know Batman’s origin story in a Batman game. Just drop me in.

but I mean shit, this game has less narrative for the MC and what’s going on than the opening minutes of A Link to the Past. (Possibly a souls like by some definitions)

I could not care less about these questions nor are they important.

NPCs mention it as well. They even say it is our destiny to inherit the 6 things.

Had my first CTD. Paused the game and *POOF*

Not surprised as pausing often had this weird micro freeze

Are you actually enjoying this game? I'm kinda not getting your overall vibe from your posts.

You know what feels bad? Winning a fight when you have no idea why you are winning. I beat the first two "king-type" bosses in chapter 3 and I don't even know how I did it. I feel like I brute-forced my way into a win with high damage. They didn't even take that long to kill. A few tries each. Yet I have no idea how to actually fight those bosses. I just killed them quickly.
