Commissar SFLUFAN
Sony invests $250 million in Fortnite maker Epic Games (GamesBeat) Quote Under the deal, the investment enables Sony and Epic to broaden their collaboration, with Sony’s portfolio of entertainment assets and technology and Epic’s social entertainment platform and digital ecosystem (think Fortnite’s increasing use as a social space or the Epic Games Store), to create unique experiences for consumers and creators. The closing of the investment is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Epic confirmed it will still be able to publish to other platforms. As noted, Sony is acquiring only a minority part of Epic Games, and it is not acquiring a controlling stake in the company.

JPDunks4
And people wondered why some questioned Tim Sweeney's wishy washy answers about things that weren't Sony regarding the Unreal 5 demo. There were no Secret Deals in the works.
Commissar SFLUFAN
Just as reference, $250 million would represent 1.4% of Epic's "theoretical" $17 billion valuation. However, I have little doubt that Sony's "real" stake in Epic will exceed the amount based purely on the valuation.

I suspect this is the first step to assuring it. I would honestly be surprised if Sony had not made more regular inroads on PC by the end of this generation. TwinIon
Even if it's a very small minority share, if it means that Epic prioritizes PlayStation optimization that's probably worth it for Sony.

Remarkableriots
Maybe this has nothing to do with porting games to PC. Maybe they want some influence on upcoming projects from Epic that could be coming to PS 5 like the Metaverse?
cusideabelincoln
The PS5 is going to be a new building in fortnite.
crispy4000
Hard to know what this means. - Sony's already got several in house engines that they'll keep building on and using, so it's unlikely the UE5 stuff is what prompted this. - EGS could be a huge boon for their profits if their PC storefront gains more popularity. Everyone else has a launcher, so it kind of makes sense to latch onto one instead of building their own. But so far Sony hasn't tried the timed exclusivity thing there like everyone else has. - As for the dedicated multimedia events ... Playstation Home coming back? Who even knows. It could also just be that they see Epic going on the up and up and want a share of that.

Bacon
Still haven't really used EGS outside of an exclusive beta. Probably won't unless they get the thing I want. Bloodborne PC Edition. That is all it would take to actually buy a game off EGS. 100% tho, Sony is going to do a shitty remake that kills the original art style for basic fidelity and make it exclusive to their shitty console.
