TwinIon
I saw this was at #1 on Netflix US yesterday, so I imagine someone else round these parts has seen this. For those unfamiliar, Tiger King is a documentary series on Netflix centered around a number of people involved in the private ownership of big exotic cats in the US. The characters in this series are completely insane, and even when a somewhat normal person shows up, they inevitably get sucked into the insanity. I think this series suffers from the reverse of the typical Netflix show in that it's completely insane in the beginning, but the later episodes cover events that can't quite live up to the simple introduction of the characters. Still, it's worth watching through to the end and only 7 or eight episodes. For anyone that doesn't want to watch the series, here's a story the Post did last June on the whole affair. Bloodporne
I watched the full series. While it was entertaining for a short while, once shit got darker and darker, I couldn't help but feel increasingly uncomfortable with watching this travesty unfold for my entertainment. I guess this could be said for many documentaries but somehow this was on another level for me. Literally every person's life in this docu is a disaster or in the process of becoming a disaster. It was really sad to watch and that's not getting into how much I fucking loathed the animal aspect, I could probably rant for paragraphs about that. CastlevaniaNut18
I might watch this at some point. NatGeo had a big article about it not too long ago that I read. Talked about a fucked up industry.

The first few episodes are a roller coaster, introducing one human train wreck after another, and it's just so fun! After you've spent enough time with them, you realize, oh, these are not just crazy people, they're bad people, doing bad things. The animal abuse is always a bit on the outside. It's rarely on screen, but even if it's not the focus it's hard not to realize how terrible and omnipresent it is throughout the series. One thing that I kept thinking of watching footage that the subjects had captured themselves was this: I mean, so much of what is on screen is illegal, right? You can't sell them or transport them across state lines. I guess the FBI has better things to do, but it really doesn't seem like it would be that hard for the Fish and Wildlife guys to take all these guys down. While I agree with "bad people doing bad things" to an extent, the thing that gets me about these kind of documentaries is that they tend to paint a very one-dimensional picture of the people on the periphery. I mean shit, they only have so much screen time of course but I still wonder how desperate and fucked the stories of people like the zoo manager, dude with long blond hair who is totally wasted at the end, woman who had her arm ripped off are. I just couldn't shake the feeling that while many of them are bad people, there is so much collateral damage. I mean it goes into detail how this dude has connections in town that call him when dead-end people arrive so he can basically bribe them with drugs and a place to stay to work at his insanely irresponsibly dangerous zoo. Bloodporne
Carole Baskin and her husband were like every stereotype of rich and crazy white sociopath rolled into one. It's funny that in a docu so absolutely stuffed with lunatics, these two creeped me out the hardest and that's including the sex-slave-cult hair metal clown. Dre801
I went to The Big Cat Rescue some years back. It was pretty cool, even met Carole. I see her differently now, lol.

Yeah, in a weird way his success made it at least understandable. He seemed to be making lots of money, at least enough to own multiple nice houses for himself and his indentured sex servants. His motives were very clear, even if it doesn't justify anything.
Dodger
While it sounds like it might eventually happen since Joe started ratting everyone out once he got to prison, literally nearly everyone involved needs to be in jail, holy shit. Bloodporne
My girlfriend reminded me of something I completely forgot about in the maelstrom of insanity later on...this show is so fucking nuts, it even has the real Scarface in it describing not sawing a dude's head off with a table saw but having been there anyway but you know, what're you gonna do! skillzdadirecta
Joe is out of prison? I thought he got 22 years. I watched this this weekend with a friend through Netflix Party and it was a trip. I went down the rabit hole last night and found some follow up articles AFTER THE TIGER KING https://www.ign.com/articles/netflix-tiger-king-joe-exotic-doc-antle-carole-baskin-jeff-lowe and this one that confirmed my suspicions during the doc that Joe didn't sing them damn songs https://metro.co.uk/2020/03/22/netflixs-tiger-king-carole-baskin-claims-joe-exotic-paid-someone-else-make-bizarre-country-songs-just-lip-syncs-12438181/ I KNEW he was pulling a Milli Vanilli. One thing it taught me is that Pacino's accent, which I had always assumed to be really overblown and basically racist, is totally spot on!!! From racism to slow clap, thanks Tiger King! Edit: Wait, Joe is out? It said he got nailed for 22 years, he must've ratted out EVERYBODY and made some deal. This needs a sequel. Also, you need to read the follow-up story to the filmmaker guy, that cool mothefucker smoking cigs with a cowboy hat on. He ended up having a legit nervous breakdown and escaping to NORWAY where he now lives and works to get the fuck away from this.
skillzdadirecta
@Dodger said he was out. I was under the impression that he was still in prison. And having been around a bunch of Cubans growing up, I can tell you Pacino's accent was ALWAYS accurate as hell

Moa
It's weird to imagine that I live on the same planet as these people. Somewhere out there they're experiencing these same moments of time that I am.
Nokra
Binged through all of this tonight and holy shit, yeah my mind is just blown. I can't believe that more of these people aren't in jail. What a crazy life some people have... It's kind of crazy how much up and down there is emotionally, too... at one point you might be feeling bad for Joe Exotic, the next you think "man what a scumbag, let him fry"..... one minute you think "there's no way Carol could have killed her husband..." and the next minute: "hmm, well maybe...".... Masterful.

Ah I misread what @Dodger posted, my bad. And yes, Carol DID feed her husband to the tiger which is why the Sheriff has reopened the case and is getting fresh leads.
thewhyteboar
Carole's current husband is so terrified of being fed to tigers like his predecessor that it's no wonder he is that cowed by her.
