osxmatt
Nothing says fiscal responsibility like a huge tax cut during a booming economy. Good thing we have room in the debt and deficit for the huge stimulus we’ll need at the end of this.

GeneticBlueprint
I actually started the rollover process for my 401k to my current employer the day before this all started. Just got the check in the mail today. It says it's good for up to 180 days. I think I'll wait a few more days to deposit it with my new employer's service provider. CayceG
Right. Well. The stock markets are irrational and we should stop paying attention to them. Also... Yet another thing I've learned about stocks--limit "up" exists.

Ding ding ding. The market’s in for a long bout of volatility—I wouldn’t bother trying to make sense of what it’s doing until the outbreak is under control at minimum. We could easily be looking at weeks of record surges and record crashes.

I wouldn't use this as an example. He said we should give Americans $1000, not $1000 a month. That's not much different than Bush's tax rebate plan in the early 2000s that gave checks to all Americans, and his subsequent one in early 2008 with a Democratic Congress in place and bipartisan support. This idea isn't new, nor is an economic stimulus via tax rebates a new idea. See socialist Lewis Black:

I don't think Democrats have historically voted against this kind of stuff. They voted against the Bush tax cuts of 2001 because of the huge cuts to big business and corporations that were included, but the 2008 one-time stimulus was bipartisan. A few Democratic Senators running against it doesn't seem like a big deal when a very notable Democratic candidate ran on giving people $1000 a month, along with several candidates open to exploring UBI. It's just not a new idea or something that saved Republicans in 2008.

Democrats were literally out there pushing for permanent paid leave in the past week, which is significantly more important than a one-time check, not to mention Andrew Yang pushing for a monthly stipend along with other Dem candidates who either supported it or considered it (maybe it was just the latter, I forget). I don't think this is the hill anyone here needs to die on. CitizenVectron
I am really hoping that the Canadian government's plan includes a bunch of money for people. I know a local woman who is a board member on both the local public school board as well as the provincial board, and owns her own small business. She called my spouse yesterday to ask if there was anything in her insurance to cover her losses right now. Unfortunately there isn't She was upset because she doesn't want to lay off her staff, but she hasn't had a customer in a few days. This is happening across the entire western world right now and needs to be stemmed immediately by a stimulus that would dwarf that from 2008/2009.
