thewhyteboar
Korea's numbers: It sounds like there is a chance schools could reopen in May or June. I hope so, it has not been fun to go without a paycheck for 2 months. Thank god for my wife.

Seems like mid summer they would be getting to herd immunity levels there, assuming at least somewhat long term natural immunity.

skillzdadirecta
New Date For The First Covid 19 Death in The U.S. Quote An autopsy report has revealed the first COVID-19-related death in the United States happened much earlier than previously thought. Santa Clara County initially reported its first coronavirus death March 9, but an autopsy revealed there was one in the county on Feb. 6. Not only is it the first death in the county, but it is now also the first recorded death in the U.S. A fatality reported by officials in Washington state Feb. 29 was previously believed to be the earliest U.S. death from the novel coronavirus. Two more autopsies from Feb. 17 and March 6 in Santa Clara County also came back positive for the virus. The county said these three people died at home during a time when very limited testing was available through the CDC. CitizenVectron
Some interesting graphs compared Europe to America: Daily deaths: Daily cases: Total deaths: Total cases: Definitely looks like the US has reached peak new daily cases for the first wave, and peak daily deaths is coming soon. Overall, the US has had a much higher infection rate than the major European countries, but has had a lower death rate (lower average age?). Unfortunately, based on the European track, while new cases and deaths will peak, they don't drop quickly afterwards.

CitizenVectron
My department purchased an industrial 3D printer shortly before the pandemic to use in replacing broken laptop parts (turns out students and teachers like to drop their laptops). We've finally found a good use for the crisis, and have been printing mask straps for nurses (one of our manager's wife is a nurse and has been our go-between): We wanted to print masks of some sort, but there's limited evidence that 3D printed masks are any good unless they use a special resin infused with copper, and we obviously don't have that. PaladinSolo
Blood Clotting is killing a lot of COVID 19 patients, and might be the reason so many are dying at home as it can lead to rapid deterioration, it was less pronounced internationally cause Americans are fatter, and our ICUs are more prepared to spot it because of it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/04/22/coronavirus-blood-clots/?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter Helen W. Boucher, an infectious-disease specialist at Tufts Medical Center, said there’s no reason to think anything is different about the virus in the United States. More likely, she said, the problem was more obvious to American doctors because of the unique demographics of U.S. patients, including large percentages with heart disease and obesity that make them more vulnerable to the ravages of blood clots. She also noted small but important differences in the monitoring and treatment of patients in ICUs in this country that would make clots easier to detect.
CitizenVectron
Trudeau announced aid for students out of work over summer: Quote Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced $9 billion in financial aid for post-secondary students, after taking criticism that too many young people are falling through the cracks under existing COVID-19 support programs. As part of that package announced Wednesday morning, students will be eligible for $1,250 a month from May through August. That will go up to $1,750 if the student is taking care of someone or has a disability. Payments will be made through the Canada Revenue Agency. It looks like it was the first time he has ever made a tunafish sandwich in his life. Clearly, the best method is below: Open can of tuna Squeeze out the excess water (or oil). Put the tuna into a small bowl and combine with mayo (and optionally, relish and mustard). Spread onto bread Cut into triangles (halves are forbidden) and serve
