AbsolutSurgen
Manitoba’s vaccination levels are a few percentage points behind the Canada average. This surge shows that we are not yet close to herd immunity.

The reason cases dropped in the UK and US was vaccination + restrictions (whether mandated or people following best practices). Israel is still under 60% fully vaccinated, and cases continue their downward trajectory while restrictions are lifted. June 1st all domestic Covid restrictions expire (they will likely continue to make inbound travel difficult), so it will be interesting to see what happens when it’s solely up to individuals to make decisions regarding their own behaviors. Winnipeg is a disaster zone at the moment, something like 15% positivity. The good news, if you can call it that, is something like 90% of the people in hospital in MB are unvaccinated. Now, some of them did get a shot but caught the virus in the first few days after (before immunity built), but at least it does show that we are on the road to reducing spread. Yup. There seems to be other places where that level hasn't seen quite the same impact (Seychelles, areas of the UK, etc.). I don't know how much b.117 or b.1617 spread in Israel. Local differences in vaccination and prior infection are the most substantial driver when comparing similar high national levels of vaccination. It’s hard to measure infection derived immunity, but it quite clearly plays a role in slowing spread in the vaccine era of Covid. The US as an example likely has had 70-80 million Covid infections, and potentially half of the adult unvaccinated population here has infection derived immunity. Canada on the other hand has significantly smaller percentages of the population with prior infections, which means the level of vaccination needed to get similar levels of immunity will necessarily be higher. That may be a big part of it -- as Israel had a very high level of natural infection. Scientists don't know how long natural derived immunity lasts, but previous studies of coronaviruses suggest it may only be 5-11 months. CayceG
Looking at this another way... People who lived and worked in Wuhan while the virus was silently spreading wound up getting it about when everyone else started to get it.

Because even if they determine that the heart condition these people developed has nothing to do with the vaccine this story is still out there for that crowd.
