Commissar SFLUFAN
Covid-19 patients in UK intensive care have 50% survival rate Quote “The truth is that quite a lot of these individuals [in critical care] are going to die anyway and there is a fear that we are just ventilating them for the sake of it, for the sake of doing something for them, even though it won’t be effective. That’s a worry,” one doctor said. The report also found that though the majority of those who have died from coronavirus across the UK were over 70, nine of the 79 who died in intensive care were aged between 16 and 49, as were 28 of the 86 who survived. The audit suggested that men are at much higher risk from the virus – seven in ten of all ICU patients were male, while 30% of men in critical care were under 60, compared to just 15% of women. Excess weight also appears to be a significant risk factor; over 70% of patients were overweight, obese or clinically obese on the body mass index scale. Commissar SFLUFAN
I am fairly certain that future historians will mark this crisis as the catalytic event that initiated the dissolution of the United States of America as a unitary political entity. I always thought it would have been 9/11, or the fall of the Soviet Union, or even the GFC, but this event has completely changed my mind, and I do agree with you. This has turned it up to 11, instead of a slow, steady rot. The only glue holding it together now is that there remains a significant number of people who still know what a somewhat effective government is. Ricofoley
Obviously Trump himself is just utterly not able to grasp the scope of this crisis, that goes without saying. But then you combine the fact that the Senate just decided to leave town for a month, even though the stimulus bill is obviously not the last thing that's going to need to be passed for us to get through this, and it really does seem like the federal government is just not really functioning the way it should. When a central government fails this badly, then it no longer has any real legitimacy as it has effectively abandoned the social compact.

Ricofoley
It's also just impossible to imagine that we're gonna start easing off of social distancing over the summer... whenever it actually happens, with the obit pages still running for those who died, and then we're going to go into a general election campaign between a candidate who advocates little technical adjustments to the existing health care system and the current president who advocates making the current system less generous. Also... maybe both of them kind of have early stage dementia? It just seems preposterous. It seems like something seismic has to change between now and then and I'm not sure what that is yet. Commissar SFLUFAN
The phrase "Constitutional Crisis" gets tossed around so very much that it's lost any real significance, but this goes far beyond being a "Constitutional Crisis" - it's legitimately an actual "Existential Crisis" of the very idea of a federated American nation-state. Anyone got a copy of the "Articles of Confederation" handy? We may need to blow the dust off of that.

A single $1200 check is supposed to solve this, when the lockdowns might extend at least into April? And it might take months for some people to get their checks?
