It's what other industries (like furniture flammability as an example) do with regard to state by state regulation. Remember, this is a plan not to make it easier for car companies, but to make more money for oil companies. So the logical next step is not only to freeze standards, but to also enforce mandatory maximums. Does X state have a 5 mpg lower standard than California? Then car companies will need to reduce consumption when selling in that state!
SuperSpreader
It doesn't make sense to build cars for all these different markets to different specs, and who knows what happens with the next administration. If they aren't short sighted they will stay on target and keep focusing on higher emissions and MPG standards. But I mean, they probably won't. CitizenVectron
Also, they have worked for years to implement the better standards. So what are they supposed to do, just not roll out vehicles for a year or two while they change the engine designs to make them less-efficient? Either way aren't the standards just a minimum baseline? You're allowed to do better than the standards.
