The Federal Communications Commission plans to move forward with establishing a three-digit number for the federally-backed hotline. Thursday’s announcement from FCC Chairman Ajit Pai signals the culmination of one of the final legislative priorities of former Senate President Pro Tempore Orrin G. Hatch of Utah. Pai said that he intends to follow a staff recommendation for establishing a three-digit dialing code, likely to be 9-8-8, to reach the network of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, currently 1-800-273-8255 (TALK). That program is funded through the Health and Human Services Department. A good idea.

mclumber1
Good idea. It's a shame it's taken this long. Edit: I wonder if the people who man suicide hotlines end up having PTSD like many emergency room nurses have. It wouldn't surprise me in the least. It's got to be numbing or heartbreaking to an operator who is trying their hardest to convince someone not to end themselves, only to have the person go through with it. marioandsonic
I like this. They also should add this number to the Emergency Call function that's on smartphones

Kidnapping is a very popular "criminal revenue enterprise" in Trinidad. In fact, some wealthier people have been kidnapped more than once. Keyser_Soze
There is a suicide prevention hotline next to the railroad crossings around here but I can't remember the number. 988 seems to be very memorable.
