thewhyteboar
All statues of Robert Lee should be replaced by statues of Grant or Sherman, two generals who could actually lead. Lee is basically the Notre Dame football of generals--win all your early matches against a cupcake schedule, then get your assed kicked in a bowl game against real competition.

Wasn't Grant also a racist piece of shit though? And then he's the president who gave up on Reconstruction before it was finished.

Grant gets a really bad rep, but was a better president and person than he is portrayed. As always, the truth is complicated. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/04/opinion/ulysses-grant-president.html This article helps a bit.

I'm pretty sure it was regular programming (as reruns) on G4 too. Edit: I guess I'm mistaken. They just LOOK like reruns. 🤷 Quote Cops went into broadcast syndication, and have remained there ever since. As of the fall 2013 it began to air mainly on Spike (now Paramount Network) on the cable side as part of the agreement for that network to air new episodes, after several years on truTV. Older episodes were picked up by the now defunct Cloo in September, 2014, after spending years on the now defunct G4, which was discontinued in December 2014. Local station syndication of the show was prevalent on most Fox stations and affiliates at the time, but as of 2015, older episodes were shifted into Cops Reloaded. WGN America also shows reruns of the regular version. At the start of 2016, the episodes in the now defunct Cloo/G4 package were moved into the Spike/Paramount Network syndicated package when the former G4/Cloo syndication agreement expired, giving that network the rights to the majority of the program. After Viacom's acquisition of Pluto TV in 2019, a 24/7 channel made up of episodes of the series was launched.

Yes and no. Irony needs some kind of awareness of the irony by the person speaking. There's none of that awareness here. If it were fiction it would qualify as literary irony, where the character may not have that self-awareness but the writer does.

Commissar SFLUFAN
The unabridged audiobook of Ibram X. Kendi's "Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitie History of Racist Ideas in America" has been made available for free on Spotify. Quote Stamped from the Beginning is more than just the history of racism and racial progress. Kendi uses meticulous research and the life stories of five “historical tour guides.” Through these histories, Kendi reveals how racism and anti-racist ideas were not born from ignorance. Rather, they were carefully built by some of America’s most intellectual leaders.

Signifyin(g)Monkey
7 hours ago, Jason said: Ok, we need at least one of 'those' posts, so I'll be the asshole that does it, since we already have several posts in this thread rightly and eloquently decrying the injustices suffered by black Americans that the case of George Floyd has crystallized: that article is shit, and makes many wrong-headed and outright stupid complaints, but it probably does legitimately suck to be a good cop right now. Not nearly as much as it sucks to be a black citizen oppressed by corrupt police and courts, not to mention the countless subtler forms of racial oppression American society subjects you to, like, say, redlining, the defunding of predominantly black schools, etc. Like, not even in the same universe of suckiness. But good cops do exist; some of them are black, too. And it's probably not easy to be one right now. You're probably just trying to do your job, and do it right, but you're working for a deeply flawed institution, and alongside corrupt individuals who are going to put you in situations that make you look bad, and further poison the attitudes the people in the community you're trying to serve have towards you. And, ultimately, the country's going to need good cops, whether you rename them 'community guardians', reduce the number of them, decentralize their administrative structure or whatever method of reform you want to try. Indeed, we'd all best hope they're the ones that get rehired when they fire the current roster in places like Minneapolis. Because for the time being, at our current stage of technological and social development, there's no way to really 'abolish' law enforcement, unless a failed state is your end-goal; somebody has to respond to that late-night 911 call about a murder/robbery/arson/etc. At least until we get to the point where robots can do it all. Get to work, AI developers.

Commissar SFLUFAN
Tulsa Major Says Police Are Shooting African Americans 'Less Than We Probably Ought to Be' (Newsweek) Quote In an interview this week with Tulsa's local radio host Pat Campbell for his podcast, TPD Major Travis Yates said: "You get this meme of, 'Blacks are shot two times, two and a half times more,' and everybody just goes, 'Oh, yeah.' They're not making sense here. You have to come into contact with law enforcement for that to occur. "If a certain group is committing more crimes, more violent crimes, and law enforcement's having to come into more contact with them, that number is going to be higher. Who in the world in their right mind would think that our shootings should be right along the U.S. Census lines? That's insanity. "All of the research says we're shooting African Americans about 24 percent less than we probably ought to be, based on the crimes being committed," he added. 1
