I've got a question for you guy's. I'm on the fence on buying this game. Like some, I am not a fan of the soulslike games. I want to be, but I haven't been so far. That said, I have enjoyed the bits of them that I've played. I enjoy the challenge and the difficulty. Where the games turn me off is that I have limited time to play and find that they don't have a great respect for my time.

I'm fine with a tough section of a game and dying to it over and over. Where I disliked them was that they'd force me to re-run long lengths of the game just to get back to the boss or encounter that killed me. Many of the reviews on Elden Ring seem to indicate that this isn't so much of an issue since it's much easier to get around and/or leave an encounter that you're struggling with and then come back to it later with different gear/approach?

The game looks really interesting and I'm tempted to jump in once I finish Forbidden West.

I'm usually a feeb when it comes to Souls games and haven't made it very far in pretty much any Souls-like at all. I'm enjoying Elden Ring a hell of a lot.

Due to the open nature of the game there aren't really large sections to repeat. There are checkpoints and SoGs all over the world and a lot of time you can resurrect near where you left off.

There are a lot of other QOL improvements that make it easier than other games in the series:

1. Checkpoints

2. Your flasks gain a charge when you beat a group of enemies

3. You won't get invaded unless in co-op

4. Summons are pretty strong.

5. I'm probably forgetting something since this is all off the top of my head.

And as you mentioned in this game you don't need to bang your head against a wall to get anywhere, while this was in previous souls games, it's a bit more obvious if you've hit a hard section there are MANY other places to go. As I've mentioned earlier in this thread I'm like 30ish hours in and most of it has been spent discovering most of the first area. I beat the first boss early on but never even explored past the first boss and in fact this is sort of a spoiler

Spoiler

You can skip both of them

But yeah my advice is to explore, discover and learn. Don't worry about going through a gauntlet of bosses and if you're having trouble there are plenty of other places to go and explore.

Man, I thought I was running out of places to explore, turns out I just didn't return to a door in a certain city... But while looking for that door (or rather, looking for a way to get to the Eastern exit of said city and eventually coming across a door) I found out just how deep the sewers went... holy shit man. This game is some next level stuff.

Do you get one flask back, or whatever flasks you used during that encounter?

Ive become very good at not using them except when locked in combat, and I seem to always be full or close to it, except when im exploring dungeons because I don't want a surprise enemy killing me. I always try to check my corners, but I still miss enemies all the time.

I think it varies based on the size of the encounter. I've taken down a group of like 3 bats and I get 1 back but I think if it's like maybe a mini-boss and some other dudes you get more back.

I understood it as you get back what you used while locked in combat, but you can't get more than you started the encounter with. So i have 12 flasks. If I use 3 while in combat, I should get three back.

But its honestly hard to confirm that, because unless its a boss enemy its rare I use more than 1.

He got me once because I was laughing at his tiny horse which was fucking hilarious, then the big fireball attack which was awesome, then on the third try he didn't really put up much of a fight for whatever reason.

I had trouble with his first phase. The second phase, I tore him up pretty good.

Just got to Academy Gate Town and I'm wondering what kind of drugs these character designers were on to come up with such nightmare fuel.

I think it's funny how some enemies are these grotesque, unfathomable monsters, others are more standard fantasy beings like dragons and zombies, and then... bears. Just big ol' bears.

And the bears are more terrifying than some of the grotesque fuckery they came up with on top of it.

Those giant bears scratching on cliffsides and what not horrify me :ana:

Even how powerful I am now this massive bear fucked me up good last night. It definitely took me by surprise.

A lot of times they're sleeping in wooded areas and by the time you notice the damn thing it's mauling you.

Also I'm playing around in Caelid more seriously right now and good god, some of the beasties there are nasty

You could have skipped it all by doing Renni's quest.

I'm actually there because I

Spoiler

met Ranni at her tower. Been following the quest line from there. I just got to Redmane, met Blaidd there and had to stop playing last night.

So, let's see.

Bears are still harder than most boss fights.

Is there a shortcut to do gestures? Sometimes I emote when I’m pressing triangle but I looked at the button mapping and I don’t see that it should be doing that.

I don't know if Elden Ring has gestures tied to motion controls but DS3 did.

Theres one disguised as a human in Limgrave not far from the trolls pulling the carriage in Limgrave.

I’ll have to check. Again I didn’t see anything on the in-game controller map that would imply gestures were mapped to triangle but it’s possible I’m triggering motion gestures somehow.

If you need help with radahn, rotten breath dragon spell infects him with 2 applications in each phase.

L3 being “yeet off horse” is bad.

You can change it. I used triangle down and unbound it from l3

Gestures are triangle plus motion, and it sucks. The map is on the right when you press start.

Shit, not wonder I don't have it. Never found these catacombs  I'm telling you I absolutely SUCK at exploring.

Oh, im still finding stuff in Limgrave by accident, and I actually looked. Like the caverns by the shore I didn't know existed until yesterday. Or the Nights Cavalry boss that I had no idea existed.

I remember when I thought they had showed too much during the network test 😆

I also got a poison katana in Volcano Manor. Serpentbone Katana I think.

Same here. Every time I place a marker down on the map and try to get there I always fail to get to the destination. It gets annoying but I'll keep at it. I'm sure I have a lot to open up, too.
