Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree - Information Thread, update (06/21): Fextralife guides posted

Recommended Posts

Aight. Yall sucked me in and Ive played like 4-5hrs today. I went Astrologer bc I wanted to experiment with some ranged magic and melee. I also took the golden seed as my keepsake.  Here are my current stats. Im level 16. Im not quite sure what I should he dumping points into so ive been doing a little strength, vigor mostly. Them did a little mind and endurance.

can you vets give me pointers? Also what gear should I look out for. I found a cave with a ton of smithing stone so ive been upgrading my starting short sword snd staff bc I havent found anything I can equip (not enough strength). I have found some decent armor pieces and I bought a better shield and leveled it a little.

so far ive

Spoiler

Beat the bosses at

Groveside Cave

Limegrove Cave

Cave of Knowledge

the knight on horseback right outside the church continuously pushes my face in, so Ive been avoiding him.

i cant believe the big troll sword dude that drops down at stormgate is not a named boss, but he is pretty easy if you kite him outside the gate away from the archers. But i cant seem to be able to entirely clear that area…so I just ran through.

I ventured south from the camp outside stormgate and found another dungeon near some poisonous flowers, but i havent attempted it yet. There is an encampment on the southside of the uncovered map for that region that I cant clear. dude are hard AF and theres some mage who reigns bolts down as youre trying to fight.

so im assuming since the guiding light is leading me to that castle north of stormgate, thats where i have to go, but I feel underpowered. As I was running up the archers and some fireballs were being shot at me.  Thats kinda where I ended for the day to hang with the fam

my biggest issue is parrying. I just cant figure out the timing on any mob or boss. Im like 0/200 in trying to do it.

I'm only a few hours in but this game feels so much more lively and "inspired" than DS3 to me.

This game is fucking gorgeous, really. Go down to the beach by night, some of the most beautiful art direction I can think of in a game. The vistas and sense of scale really are a whole level game of From's penchant for grandeur.

Game is making me happy like a kid on Xmas right now.

No, not really. Not unless you got knocked down during a combo or are fighting like 7 enemies at once.

Nah, sometimes it'll be only two enemies, one boss, etc. If you're down for the count after a random strike it seems luck will determine if you live at that point.

Mash the roll button when you're downed.

Nada. Roll button or jump do absolutely nothing once you hit the ground. You basically gotta wait three or four seconds. Is it a matter of leveling up?

It's From's way of telling you to stop getting hit.

If only it happened after taking several hits in a row or when you've not low on health or something. I know I gotta "git gud" or whatever, but it feels straight up cumbersome compared to the combat in some of their previous games, especially Sekiro, but maybe it's possible to nerf it via leveling up poise or something.

Horseback combat rules. Timing a heavy blow with an axe while charging at an enemy feels so good.

I followed the path the castle that it starts you on, but didn't feel up to that boss, so instead I just rode as far south as I could. I found that some other grace sites started to point me in another direction, towards another castle (which I assume will at some point be "critical"). Seems like a really good balance of being open while providing some guidance.

Oh Sekiro is a very different game. This plays slower. A little less finesse, a little more forgiving with normal stuff. But so far, when I Roll, I'm fine. Getting up is a headache sometimes though, so I get it.

For any class, pumping Vigor up to 20 asap is a good starting goal as it'll give you a lot of survivability early game.  You can make your character however you want, but if you want to mess around with magic, I don't suggest raising strength or dex past 16 (unless an item you really want to use requires it) and instead invest your points into Faith or Intelligence. You may need to boost arcane as well since some magics also have a secondary arcane requirement. As far as parrying goes, it's passe now. Guard Counters are way more reliable and easier to time.

thanks this is helpful. My goal was to get strength to 16 since im finding a bunch of swords that require it. My tactic has been to use magic to damage the enemy as much as possible then move in for melee critical strikes.

they dont really tell you what the differences are between faith, intelligence, mind and arcane. I havent put anything into them but one point of mind bc it bumped my FP up a few points.

For sure, Sekiro and Elden Ring play differently, but also there seems to be more of a luck factor in the combat so far. In Sekiro and the other FromSoft game's I played it feels like any hit or death I take is totally on me, but in this game there's more moments where you're at the mercy of things.  If you get knocked down randomly you basically gotta wait up to four seconds and hope the combatant doesn't body you in the time it takes to recover. I talked to someone else about this and they mentioned leveling up poise, so maybe that's a way around it.

I think you're suffering from the framerate problems that the rest of us are. Therer have definitely been missed frames and stuff that screwed whole runs of mine.

Is your equipment load too high, did you run out of stamina when you got hit and that's why you collapsed?

Nah, not a framerate thing that I'm having an issue with, though that might be an issue that's happening, not sure

Y'know I never though to check, does equipment load effect stuff like that even when not overencumbered?

You can. I ran to the grace point to get summoned though, it was not my instance, so im not sure that matters.

speaking of this…I noticed before dungeons, theres a statue and you activate it and it says “the summoning well is active” or something like that. Im assuming that means you can call in another player for help? But how do you do it?

You need a finger. I would check youtube. Ive been summoned to a passworded game, but I haven't summoned anyone. He had to walk me through all that. Besides Bloodborne, I have very little souls experience.

Edit: Also don't wait till you have 75+ golden ruins before you use them.... One by one.. by one..

The open world is giving me anxiety 😆

I just had a huge thing attack me in a place I had farmed many times now, just out of nowhere. Pushed my shit in hard.

Was it night time? Seems like some areas have extra enemies or mini bosses at night.

This open world is giving me a lot of Dragon's Dogma vibes.

I literally just told my buddy I was chatting with a few minutes ago that if you threw in some Pawns and called it Dragon's Dogma 2, I wouldn't have argued.

Also.... I just wandered into the swamp.... and.. yeah...

You activate it and summoning signs appear. You don't need fingers to summon at a well.
