Update: Blizzard just cancelled a "Battlefield-style" StarCraft FPS project (Kotaku/Jason Schreier), team reassigned to Diablo IV and Overwatch 2

It wouldn't have had the RTS element like Battlezone - just pure FPS gameplay.

I doubt anyone would release a hybrid RTS/FPS game on the consoles.

I have a feeling this is Activision telling them hey we need more games out ASAP. Have no time for you to figure out how to make a large scale FPS.

Cancelling Titan and now this, with the only game since Diablo III (2012-2014) and Starcraft II (2010-2015) being Overwatch (no, I don't count Hearthstone or Heroes of the Storm)? Concerning . . .

Edit: I guess I shouldn't discount the five proper expansion packs for World of Warcraft that have come out, to be fair, from 2010-2018. They still really support that game!

WoW classic, Warcraft III Reforged, Diablo Immortal (lul) on the horizon as well.

Yeah but that's all meh at best too. I haven't been excited for a Blizzard game since Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void came out in 2015.

I think there’s a pretty big cult following for classic, less for reforged but still a following. Immortal just lul

Not sure if it's just me that's changing but as I approach 40, it's getting harder and harder for me to get excited about new games. I still enjoy a good FPS now and then, and still enjoy good sequels to revisit favorites but everything new the past 5-6 years has really had that been there-done that feel. There are some exceptions (Last of us/Witcher 3/Horizon/God of War/Overwatch) but mostly meh.

That said, I've been playing some VR stuff on my buddy's vive and the good ones seem fresh. Which has prompted me to pre-order an index.

I would seriously look into PC/Steam indie games. A lot more narrative-driven and adult oriented in my experience.

I know people like to hate on the "new Blizzard," but I feel like there's still a core competency that still exists there, and a willingness to cancel another big FPS game demonstrates that they do still care. I feel like the common thread of those long post-mortem pieces on failed games is the inability to admit when something isn't working. At least Blizz is still able to do that. Hopefully the games they do release live up to their potential, but I'd rather read about a potentially cool game that got canceled than see Blizz waste more years forcing through a bad game.

I couldn't get excited about an FPS that isn't doom. Im completely done with them.

So apparently Overwatch 2 (which people were assigned to) will be focused more on player vs AI, and is similar to L4D2. Hmm. I definitely enjoy some of the event missions in Overwatch which are cooperative in nature...but switching focus to PvE is a bad idea, if this is true.

Based on the fact that it's call Overwatch 2 and it has to be mostly similar to Overwatch I don't have too much hope for this, but Blizzard doing a Warframe-esque game in the Overwatch universe would be pretty interesting.

That's actually most of what I play these days. Definitely PC first outside of the AAA PS4 titles.
