silentbob
I guess he wasn’t able to give him that Donald Trump signed Elton John CD with “Rocket Man” on it. Probably just a burnt copy and not a legit cd copy anyways
PaladinSolo
Its almost as if theres a reason for the decades of foreign policy protocols with NK, but thats a pretty good troll, we'll denuclearize when you do, lol.

Unless it was a CD single of Rocket Man he never had a CD called Rocket Man, it was off the album Honky Chateau. So it had to be burned because I doubt there are any CD singles of Rocket Man out in the wild.

It's the most locked down country in the world, who spits out straight lies to it's people (example: the US drops food of for NK because we lost the war, and constant reports of wars on US soil where NK is winning). How does a private citizen open a US news station in that country?

She wasn't distributing news within the DPRK, she was reporting on the DRPK from within the DPRK for a non-DRPK audience: Quote Jean H. Lee is a Pulitzer-nominated veteran foreign correspondent and expert on North Korea. Lee led the Associated Press news agency’s coverage of the Korean Peninsula as bureau chief from 2008 to 2013. In 2011, she became the first American reporter granted extensive access on the ground in North Korea, and in January 2012 opened AP’s Pyongyang bureau, the only Western text/photo news bureau based in the North Korean capital. She has made dozens of extended reporting trips to North Korea, visiting farms, factories, schools, military academies and homes in the course of her exclusive reporting across the country. https://www.wilsoncenter.org/person/jean-h-lee

This is the country that sentenced and ultimately killed a man for fucking with a propaganda poster. They don't allow you to take pictures of the military. How do you skirt around their control to accurately report on North Korea? This isn't like moving to England to report on the going ons to everyone outside of England. This is North Korea. One thing that jumps out at me is that it says she was granted access in 2011. That's the same year Lil Kim took over power. Allowing her in may have been a part of his early narrative of "moderating". My guess would be that she had minders, and hers comments about everything being transactional between them was precisely on this point. NK wanted her to go places and look at carefully controlled happy stories about North Koreans doing just super. And she wanted access. So she probably wasn't doing hard hitting exposes on government corruption, but pushed where she could.

TwinIon
I wonder how much of Pompeo's failure was basically the North Korean's deciding he wasn't as easily manipulable as Trump is.
ort
It's because Trump went over there to get feel-good headlines and to put forth an appearance of progress. Pompeo had to actually hash out real details and that's when negotiations actually matter, and when you get actual pushback.

PaladinSolo
Trump is growing frustrated that Korea isn't cooperating since his Glorious Summit. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/in-private-trump-vents-his-frustration-over-lack-of-progress-on-north-korea/2018/07/21/f6adef88-da7d-403e-9ec8-47d7876fa1de_story.html?utm_term=.497d4505df95 But in the days and weeks since then, U.S. negotiators have faced stiff resistance from a North Korean team practiced in the art of delay and obfuscation. Diplomats say the North Koreans have canceled follow-up meetings, demanded more money and failed to maintain basic communications, even as the once-isolated regime’s engagements with China and South Korea flourish. Meanwhile, a missile-engine testing facility that Trump said would be destroyed remains intact, and U.S. intelligence officials say Pyongyang is working to conceal key aspects of its nuclear program. The lack of immediate progress, though predicted by many analysts, has frustrated the president, who has fumed at his aides in private even as he publicly hails the success of the negotiations. But when Pompeo arrived in Pyongyang, the North Koreans insisted they were still not ready to commit to specific plans, according to diplomats familiar with the discussions. The delay angered U.S. officials, who were under pressure to deliver given Trump’s premature announcement on June 20 that North Korea had already “sent back” the remains of 200 soldiers. The sentiment worsened when Kim Jong Un chose not to meet with Pompeo during his stay as had been expected. Pompeo later denied that a meeting was planned, a claim contradicted by diplomats who said the secretary initially intended to see the North Korean leader. Unable to secure an agreement on remains during his trip, Pompeo scheduled a meeting between the North Koreans and their Pentagon counterparts to discuss the issue at the demilitarized zone on July 12. The North, however, kept U.S. defense officials waiting for three hours before calling to cancel, the diplomats said. The North Koreans then asked for a future meeting with a higher-ranking military official. On Wednesday, Trump said he secured a commitment from Russia to “help” with the North Korea issue. “The process is moving along,” he tweeted. “Big benefits and exciting future for North Korea at end of process!” But late last week in meetings with his aides, Trump bristled about the lack of positive developments in the negotiations. And on Friday at the United Nations, his ambassador, Nikki Haley, accused Russia of blocking efforts to discipline North Korea’s illegal smuggling.
