I think One interesting aspect of the 2020 election will be that this kind of tactic—“candidate x said A in 198x/199x but says NOT A now!”—will effectively be dead. When Trump literally contradicts himself daily, the response to such a tactic by voters will likely be “so?” In fact, that’s likely going to be their response to all manner of character attacks. Whatever skeletons get dug out of the closet of someone like Biden, the response will be, “So? Did he sleep with a porn star and then pay her hush money while running for office?” It’s the price that will be paid for normalizing Trump’s behavior and lowering the bar for professional conduct to practically nothing. Doesn't help that the guy calling Biden out via Twitter did the same thing, even more recently. Then said he was just "passively acquiescing." Least he gets to evolve! True in the general but less so for the primary. He'll be made to answer for this kind of stuff but what matters is a) what his response is and b) whether the media cares what his response is if it's not the one they want. Spawn_of_Apathy
I still am a little shocked at all this. When I first turned 18 and could vote all the way through 2014, I never actually thought we'd see a lengthy government shut down over a manufactured issue fueled by racism and bigotry. I really do hate that under Trump this is the new normal.

Jason
Senate Leaders Reach Deal That Could Reopen Government by Week’s End Quote The Senate will vote Thursday on two separate bills that would bring an immediate end to the partial government shutdown: one backed by President Trump that includes $5.7 billion for his border wall and another that would simply extend funding for shuttered agencies through Feb. 8. Based on the NYT alert I got...the only reason there's finally progress on this is so that Trump can give his televised SOTU???

Nokra
I've seen several people proposing a theory around social media lately and I was curious to know what everyone's thoughts were on it. If this has been discussed and disproven already, my apologies, I am a Press Pool n00b. :P The tldr version is: Trump has such a boner for the border wall because the steel slats that he wants to use for the wall are manufactured by Evraz, a Russian steel company with locations in the US. The company is owned by Russian billionaire and friend to Putin and Trump, Roman Abramovich. So Trump's obsession with the wall seems to be very much about lining his own pockets and those of his friends. Does this make any sense to you all? Is this simply part of the corruption that everyone talks about with this administration, and it's only news to me? :P

From his perspective he just needs to know that he gets a lot of money if he helps his buddies out. From there it's a simple matter of pushing for high tariffs on steel imports and awarding contracts to his friends.

Joe
I was just talking to my buddy from high school who is now an ATC out in Salt Lake City. He said that a lot of his co-workers are already looking for other jobs. It's not about just this shutdown to them, but the fact that it is probably going to keep happening. So ridiculous
