What, you’ve never wanted to guard a veil?

This is 100% the same BioWare that made MEA

From my Mass Effect Thread:

Quote

Mass Effect: Andromeda was a good direction to take, but "Pathfinder" and "Ryder" sounds like some kinds of porn fan-fiction. Picking "commander" and a "Shepard" was the right choice. It was choice that created a Leader. You need a character with titles like that. Witcher, Warden, Commander, God, Master, Chief, Spartan. These are titles with power. Pathfinder isn't. Pathfinder sounds like it could be the name of a shitty game. Ryder is just a mistake. It doesn't need to have meaning Shepard, but Ryder ain't it chief. Ryder is a gamertag from a kid who thinks it sounds cool.

They fuckin' suck at names.

What is it about that statement that makes you feel that way? Seems like it could be said of any Bioware RPG except maybe BG1.

Guards have power though.

it's not really about the meaning this time but just how bad "veil"guard sounds

"That's the Veilguard" "You take on the role of the Veilguard" or something like that sounds alright. Not a huge fan of but it's decent.

"I'm going to go home and play Dragon Age: THE Veilguard" sounds like poop.

Companions are important, but when you are making that statement before we even see the characters, I just know we are about to get some of the worst companions BioWare has ever produced. I don't think Older BioWare would brush off the threat like that. It sounds bad to me. Like, it could be said about most of their games, but they didn't really lead with that. It reads like the core is the power of friendship and I don't like that.

Cuz like, here's the thing right, all of your crew could have died in ME2. You could say fuck your crew if you wanted to. You really couldn't do that shit in DA:I or ME:A

You couldn't do that in DA:O or the first Mass Effect either. The statement about the companions doesn't worry me, they know that the a lot of the popularity of both series,  Dragon Age and Mass Effect, lies with the companions and that thats where they were criticized a lot for their most recent games. Inquisition was well received but there weren't really any memorable companions in that game. They're trying to get our ahead of that... and to justify the title change.

True. I mean Dreadwolf sounds way cooler, but that sounds pretty cool too. Guardian(s) of the Veil sounds better but not sure if that retains the meaning they want.

You could kill Wrex, and I think you can miss either Garrus or Wrex or maybe both. You can also miss Sten and Leilana. You can swap/kill Alistair for whatshisface and I'm pretty sure you can kill Zevran.

I'm not sure how much I would conclude that from the statement, but I do see what you're worried about. I'm worried in general just because Bioware isn't the same place anymore.

Yeah but you can't kill the whole squad. You're going to get some people sticking with you despite the choices you make. I mean you can also kill Leilana and Wynn or drive them off. You can kill Sten if you piss him off and turn him against you. But at the end of the game you will have some members riding with you. I've done miltiple run throughs of DA:O including a couple of evil runs. We don't know what this new game will be like but I'm personally encouraged by them focusing on the companions because I didn't really love the companions in DA:2 or Inquisition. DA:O, Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 have the best companions in Bioware games in my opinion. Personally, I'm more concerned by the fact that they dropped the number of members in your party from three to two.

Point is that you can't do any of that shit in DA:I or ME:A and they have the worst cast of characters so far. DA:TV sounds exactly the same and that makes me think we are going to have the worst cast of companions so far. They should 100% be like BG3 at this point, but I just know they are going to double down on being more like ME:A and DA:I. It's what my gut tells me.

Some more information here:

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is officially being renamed to Dragon Age: The Veilguard ahead of its big gameplay reveal on June 11. In an exclusive interview with IGN, BioWare GM Gary McKay explained the decision while teasing new info on the story, combat, and more.

Quote

When The Veilguard is finally revealed on June 11, BioWare’s presentation will include 15 minutes of gameplay from the opening moments of the game, which will help set up the story. On the gameplay front, McKay says that The Veilguard’s combat was a “big area of focus” and something the team wanted to push forward. Among other things, McKay says that The Veilguard will feature an ability wheel designed to give players orders to the two companions who can join them in battle.

“As an RPG, strategy in combat is important as you bring two companions to every fight. Each companion brings unique powers and abilities that have a direct impact on how you choose to take down the enemies at hand,” he says. “To add another layer to that strategic element, we’re introducing a new ability wheel where you can pause the action and set up your next move – whether it’s your companions’ abilities or your own.

Look, I love Mass Effect (well, I did until the last 5 minutes of 3), but I wish you could take at least 3 party members with you like in Origins and BG3. Even then, I regularly wished I could have more active party members in BG3.

I wish we never had a crew larger than the party size. I mean in games like FF7 as well. Having to control 8 or 9 party members in a turn-based game would be a bit draining, but they could double up units to give the appearance of everyone contributing in battle.

I'm okay with it being larger than you can have in your active party, but I still wish the active party was bigger than it often is. Inevitably you start having staple party members that balance out your character class, but that then makes it so you don't have much room to change things up with other characters. In BG3, Shadowheart was always in my party, and I almost always had a heavy hitter like Laezel or Karlach, and then you have one slot to change around as you go, which just doesn't give you enough time with everyone!

Yeah, unfortunately Bioware is now in a place where they have to prove to me that they can make a game I want to buy.

The smaller party isn't what I would ask for, the first mod I installed in BG3 was the expanded party.

That's what replays are for. By the time I was done with the Mass Effect and Dragon Age games I had playthroughs with pretty much every party member in my party.

I suppose, though I almost never replay a longish RPG enough times :p

Yeah, it looked like a trailer for a MOBA more than an RPG, but I'll reserve judgement until after Tuesday's reveal.
