Stephen King’s Storm of the Century - 8/10

It’s on Hulu, so I figured it was time to watch it. It certainly shows its age, but I found it to be a compelling story about small communities and the secrets they keep.

I believe King has aid that is his favorite mini series of his work

Speak No Evil - A Danish family meets a Dutch family while on vacation. They later reconnect for a weekend visit, where things get… uncomfortable. If you’re in the mood for a good, (very) slow burn thriller, check it out on Shudder.

Sounds good :( but I don't have shudder....and lord knows I don't need another damn streaming service bill

Keep an eye out on AMC+. It comes with a bunch of stuff including Shudder, and they offer good deals sometimes. Last Christmas I got some crazy deal that was multiple years for like $25 total.

Moonfall - dumb and not in a fun, entertaining kind of way.  Pretty flat and dull.  The freaking world is being ripped to pieces and there's no sense of urgency; it's as if they're dealing with a tropical storm.   I can see why this was a huge flop.

I read that this was meant to be a trilogy; considering how poorly this performed, I don't see anymore of these happening.

Grand Isle: 5/10

I can't recall a time when Nic Cage and Kelsey Grammer were in the same movie, so in terms of that this movie is a must see. Unfortunately the rest of the movie isn't that compelling. It starts with Nic Cage's (Walter) house getting robbed, he shoots the robber in the back and he breaks the fence. Then we are at a police station where Kelsey Grammer plays some shitty detective and he's interviewing a beat up dude that I guess we are supposed to assume was the robber, but it can't be as he recounts the story which begins with him fixing the fence. In any case it's a strange tale about a disgruntled ex Vietnam vet and his unsatisfied wife and the guy fixing their fence, Buddy, who has to stay at their house because his car won't start and a hurricane is coming. The problem is they have a sinister secret and that secret would have made a more compelling movie than what they made. I think the acting is fine for the most part but most of the characters act irrational and not just the crazy ones. But like I said it's an odd movie that conceals what would have been a better movie.

Been a minute, here's some stuff.

Rosewood - I went through some of Singleton’s stuff and this was just the best. The way everything escalates and the false narrative in the white community mutates and feeds into their fears and paranoias and prejudices and leads to their actions is pretty horrifying yet competently realized and thought-through. As angering as it is, it’s also strangely exciting and Rhames is great as the hero. Wish Singleton had done more stuff like this, he really pushed his visual talents to the next level here that I haven’t really seen in his other works.

Gridlock’d - One of the oddest buddy films I’ve ever seen, and also one of the best. Roth and Tupac make for an incredible pair, Newton is great too. I could watch this forever (okay, forever is a long time, but I did love this.)

Barbarian - Really good. I went in cold. Recommend that for others too.

White Reindeer - Also watched Vacation! by Clark as well, and I don’t know if we quite see eye to eye on what necessarily constitutes as funny (certainly not in how he chooses to present that comedy to us) but this one was more effective in my eyes in how it shows someone going through some fairly wild, unconventional methods of processing their grief and being largely non-judgmental about the means (drug use, sexual promiscuity) and ends on a light note.

The Vast of Night - Certainly impressive for an indie and the two leads are quite wonderful, but outside of the rat-a-tat opening, the pacing of this is just deadly. Completely antithetical in my eyes to building any sense of mystique or intrigue, and doesn’t wholly earn what on paper is a perfectly fine ending.

Don’t Look Up - McKay is somehow getting worse at movies, and he needs to be stopped. Career lows for everyone. I wish I could spit on this thing.

The Woman King - The first hour is really solid, even though this was obviously cut down for the rating, but the second half suffers from one too many a narrative contrivance (there’s already a big one, but I was ready to roll with that one.) Not a deal breaker, just a disappointing choice. Everyone’s great, an overall good time.

Confess, Fletch - Horrendous trailer, but I put my faith in Mottola and Hamm, and came out a winner. Fantastic, hilarious, going to be a cheap buy and frequent rewatch for me most likely.

God’s Country - Announces its intentions of high-mindedness early on and doesn’t really live up to it. Newton’s really good, and the conception of her character as someone who can’t let shit go adds a little something to a pretty by-the-numbers one-against-many tale.

Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne - Weird seeing something so straightforward and stylistically normal from Bresson. Just really well done, and that ending's a killer.

Avatar 3D - I wonder if this inspired Get Out.

Don’t Worry Darling - Wilde shows chops as a visual stylist and the sound design is on-point (justified and countered my questioning it being in a Dolby theater) and Pugh is obviously a charismatic performer, but there’s a whole lotta nuthin going on in this thing until the twist which is laughably bad and sinks the whole thing. The black martyrdom shit is also troubling. And since everyone is gravitating towards it, Styles is fine. Competent enough, and of course out-performed by everyone. HOWEVER there is one scene where he is distractingly bad, and he doesn’t even deliver any lines. Looks like a dude that’s just completely lost and rudderless.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 2.5/5

The reason why the first movie worked for me was because it kept things kid friendly but kept a few jokes in for the slightly older viewers. Here they just seem to play to the kids audience with the jokes and Jim didn’t seem to have that energy and came a little force. They also made Knuckles nothing more but a copycat of Drax. I watched my 4K disc and it looked pretty great on screen but the sound was either great or really lacking for an Atmos track with surprisingly low use of overhead sound, where they should of been. At least the setup for the 3rd movie is well done with the mid credit scene.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners - 8/10

You all know the drill about this show by now so I can probably spare you the details. Basically this show is probably better than the game deserves. It's a poignant story like I said reminiscent of True Romance mixed with a heist movie and maybe even some of The Wrestler mixed in. The writing is strong as someone who has never played the game it clearly outlines not only the culture around cybernetic implants but also the consequences of having too many. The show is also filled with a lot of likable characters making the events of the show that much more impactful.

Studio Trigger did a great job with the animation, colors are vibrant, action is frenetic and I feel they really made the world come alive. While not as crazy writing wise as their previous shows I do feel that this probably the most extreme they've been in terms of gore and even nudity. Although I don't feel it's out of line with what was presented by the game, it's probably toned down in that regard. Edgerunners is a good show in many regards, it was a shame to see it have to end so soon but it was a fun time while it lasted.

Stacy (Stacy: Attack of the Schoolgirl Zombies) - 6/10

Stacy is a gory, silly, zombie movie from the director that brought you Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl. It is silly in that it's a sorta comedy, certainly self aware on the verge of parody. In the not to distant future girls between the age of 15 - 17 will become zombies, but they are called Stacies. They are infected by butterfly twinkle powder that brings them to a state of near death happiness and that's when they turn into a zombie. To dispose of a Stacy is called a "repeat kill" and by law only a loved one can perform a repeat kill on a Stacy. Other than that there is a special force called the Romero Repeat Kill Troops that will also do the job. This isn't the only horror reference as there are hand chainsaws named after Bruce Campbell. In any case the movie isn't really one cohesive story but rather a lot of intertwining short stories ranging from a guy who fell in love with a Stacy and wanted to find a cure to the Drew (named after Drew Barrymore) Illegal Repeat Kill Troops, who illegally take out loved ones for money. This all kind of amount to what feels like a sketch show, silly moments, gory moments but kind of unsatisfying as a movie as a whole. There is a lot of dismemberment in the movie and the gore effects are alright so if you are in it to see blood and guts, which this movie seems to be a vehicle for, then you might be satisfied.

Shudder's Queer For Fear

A 4 part docu series about LBTQ+ influence in horror films and horror literature, currently only 1 episode is out. Much like Shudder's Noir documentary, it is fucking fantastic. My biggest disappointment is in myself, being such a fan of horror and how little I knew about the subject.

Trying to do 31 Horror/Halloween movies in 31 days.

Oct 1: The Wolf of Snow Hollow 7.5/10

Enjoyed it a lot. It’s campy and funny. Solid way to start off the season.

This is on the list for the wife and I this month. We watch as many "horror" films as we can on weekends leading up to Halloween.

Lol it’s really a lot harder than it should be. I’ve only actually done it once out like 10 attempts.

Yeah before October I usually have lists I've made of all the allegedly good horror films from that and the past few years, as well as classics my wife has missed, and that ends up becoming a long list every year.

Oct 2: X - 9/10

Yeah this lived up to all the hype and then some. Brilliant.

Also on the list, the wife and I will probably watch this next weekend. I wish the prequel Pearl was already available online so we could watch that too. Guess I should list and rate what we've gotten through so far (we only do movies on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays). I used to get in depth with a review, but just scores will have to suffice.

A Quiet Place Part II: 7.5/10

The Shallows: 7/10

Halloween (1978): 8/10

Halloween (2018): 7.5/10

Halloween Kills - Extended Cut: 7.5/10 (people hated this? I fucking loved it)

Bodies Bodies Bodies: 7.5/10 (very clever, cutting satire of Gen Z'ers)

Quiet Place 2 is def on my list

gonna wait to rewatch Halloween 2018 till the third comes out(haven’t seen the second one)

did you buy Bodies Bodies Bodies or find a place to rent it? I couldn’t only find it for $20 when I was looking tonight.

Yeah I debated waiting for the third but we'll just roll to theaters on the 14th to see the third one (when it comes out), but smart you're waiting you'll be fresh with the other movies in mind. As for Bodies Bodies Bodies, I get almost all my movies via the high seas yar matey so unfortunately I'm not much help. However, looking online, it's already available to buy and will be available to rent on streaming platforms come October 18th. I definitely recommend it. It also skewers Millennials and Gen X'ers to a lesser degree too. :)

So the last David Cronenberg movie I had revisited and posted about here was Dead Ringers and I loved it. Videodrome, loved it big time. The Brood, also great.

I got to The Fly over the weekend and I had very fond memories of this one, such a great movie in my mind. After revisiting it, I actually think this is my least favorite Cronenberg I've revisited so far. I know Goldblum is great in this in many ways but I just don't really like the film itself anymore. It lacks the weird, otherworldly feel of his other movies, the cinematography isn't as interesting and there's something about the pacing that feels unsatisfying. Her boss, the guy John Getz plays, is kind of a nothing-ish character who seems to veer from "oh man, he's gonna be a villain-level wrench in these gears" to...not. I don't know, I was really surprised because I always remembered this as a great one from back in the day. If I rate it based purely on my viewing now, it's a 6/10 for me.

Its the least "Cronenbergian" Cronenberg film. I enjoyed the romantic tragedy aspect and the fact its a horror with no real bad guy but its also my least favorite of his films.

Exactly, which is why The Fly had mainstream success. Cronenberg tried to make his most "accessible" film while still being somewhat Cronenberg and no surprise, audiences loved it because they don't ever want to be challenged too much by a filmmaker (this is consistent in how truly challenging films always get poor audience scores). Dead Ringers and Videodrome will never get the mainstream success The Fly did for this reason (and others).

Really a very good sequel that moves the story in a perfectly logical direction. But I think the suspense isn’t on the level of the original. Certainly nothing comes close to the bathtub scene. And the emotion isn’t even in the ballpark. The shock of the loss bracketing the beginning and end of the original is what truly elevates it. This is a really fun good time but it’s not special like the first.
