crispy4000
Much more in the link, including Crackdown 3-esque claims, possibilities of outsourcing their cloud stuff (ie: working with partners): Quote When we talk about cloud gaming, we’re referring to a game that resides on an EA server rather than on the gamer’s PC or mobile device. The gamer enters the game by installing a thin client that can access EA’s servers where the games are running. We’ve been developing software that utilizes the cloud to remotely process and stream blockbuster, multiplayer HD games with the lowest possible latency, and also to unlock even more possibilities for dynamic social and cross-platform play. Beyond that, we’re investing in cloud gaming to enable deeper personalization, and to eventually create a world full of user generated content — blurring the lines between the discrete domains of game engines and game services. In fact, it is the merging of these two formerly distinct domains, along with the paradigm of cloud gaming, that is a key driver of the next-generation unified platform from EA. https://medium.com/@Electronic_Arts/announcing-project-atlas-a-vision-for-a-cloud-native-gaming-future-d58ef77f74db
XxEvil AshxX
Now instead of shutting down their servers and making your game unplayable, they can just take it away altogether!
number305
Someone will make this whole cloud gaming thing work. But I have no trust in EA and would not sign up for it from them.
Brian
It makes zero economic sense for EA to work on a streaming solution. I am sure that Google, Microsoft or X company will be open to creating a service contract that allows EA access to the streaming technology. That's also why this will be such a mess. The major publishers are looking for ways to circumvent the console manufacturers and Valve. Not buddy up to them. This is the opportunity they've been waiting for. I'm sure some deals will be cut, but by and large, this will be a wild west. Next gen, I won't be surprised if we start seeing stream-only betas and timed exclusive DLC to the cloud (or relevant subscription service). XxEvil AshxX
How about gamers having ZERO confidence in EA?

Like any other cloud service, the infrastructure is an investment to make more money. They'll recoup it with subscriptions, added microtransaction profits, royalities earned from other games on their service, etc.
Brian
A company who struggles to make its premier engine work for any game other than Battlefield does not instill confidence that it can create a streaming infrastructure. It make little sense to waste any capital on this while streaming is 10 years away from having a significant portion of the market. At that point, just use the money saved and acquire a streaming company. There will be dozens to choose from.

It doesn't matter if widespread adoption would be soon or not. Too many other big names are jumping on the bandwagon. Everyone who gets in now will have a head start in install base and mindshare.
