johnny
There really aren’t any cheap scares. Jump scares are there but they don’t use them that much. I feel like everything I watched was earned. I can’t remember thinking a scare sucked or was cheap.
johnny
My friend (who loves the book) started texting me in all caps when Spoiler You find out who the bent-neck lady was. He practically creamed in his pants over how well done it was He wasnt very interested in the show until I told him how good it was because he wasn’t fond of them changing a ton of shit but he’s happy now. Moa
Adult Luke is unreasonably handsome for the adult version of his child actor and also for a heroin addict. Also, Episode 3 and 4 felt much stronger than the first two.

I think many of these 'limited' type of shows, if that's what this is and I assume so, are going more the way of a long-format film rather than traditional TV show format. Not to excuse the show if you're not being hooked of course, but I've been thinking this for some time with other shows and this one really felt like a long film to me. Moa
This feels more like LOST than the "one long movie" format, at least the first few episodes do. So far, each episode feels like it has a self-contained story that follows the perspective of one of the principal characters and slowly advances the overall narrative. Each episode has a fairly hard start and stop that plays into a larger arc. As a general trend, I love the "one long movie" format for shows, but I hate that so many of them are hedging for a season 2. It is understandable from the business perspective, but I also feel like the practice undermined what is otherwise one of my favorite shows of all time. Spoiler Dark That tangent aside, I also read the introduction to House of Leaves yesterday and am thoroughly enjoying scaring myself this October. Actually, you're probably right about that thinking back on it with what you typed in mind. I feel like I have a bit of a skewed view on that possibly since I was sick that weekend and literally watched 8 episodes basically in a row in one day. I haven't seen Lost or Dark actually. I do fucking love Twin Peaks though! Regarding the season 2 thing, I fully agree. Maybe a rare opinion but I thought Stranger Things' second season for example was completely unnecessary and I believe the overall 'world' would've been a more powerful experience without it. CastlevaniaNut18
Watched 2 episodes tonight. It definitely has the atmosphere down. Hasn't scared me, but parts of it are definitely tense.
CastlevaniaNut18
I fucking had nightmares last night about being in a creepy house, followed by ghosts. Goddammit.
Dawnguard2001
Just finished the season in a week and a half and loved it. I only jumped at a few seasons, but was creepy enough to give me goosebumps throughout. The only thing that I did not like was the actor who played Luke. The guy was to well put together to be a recovering addict. Just kind of pulled me out of his struggles.
TheLeon
Loved it. I really appreciated the overall structure of the season. Having an episode dedicated to each kid for the first 5 was really useful. Getting to really know all these characters makes all the reveals so much more satisfying. Spoiler Stuff like the bent-neck lady was obviously great and chilling, but I also liked the less intense reveals, like when Hugh is revealing to Steve that there was no treehouse and the guy working on the clock was definitely a ghost. A couple of the jump scares got me, but I mostly just delighted in the constantly creepy atmosphere.
CitizenVectron
Overall I enjoyed it. It did have some issues with acting, especially in the long-take episode, but overall it was fine for TV. Jump scares were fine, and the overall creepiness factor was good. Yes the story was a bit predictable, but I think it was still enjoyable even if you suspected what was coming. The half-season climax was definitely better than the end-season one, though. Overall I would definitely recommend this to people to watch. It wasn't perfect, but it's probably the long-story horror show that has been put out.

That's kind of the beauty of its format and creeping dread atmosphere, it really nestles in your thoughts with time I think. I'm really happy to see a Horror themed film or show go in this direction at all considering popular Horror trends for the past decade or more. 7 minutes ago, Captain Pickle said: was going to say exactly this. CastlevaniaNut18
I got my husband to watch episodes 3 and 4 with me last night. Now he's interested. May try to blow through it this weekend while we're off together.
CastlevaniaNut18
One more episode to go. Ballgame tonight, so we'll probably finish it when he gets off work tomorrow. Episode 8 was good and I did jump a little at that scene that some of you were talking about, but no screams here.
CastlevaniaNut18
Okay, so we ended up finishing it tonight, since the game didn't last stupidly long. I got some feels at the end. I think it wrapped it up perfectly. This is easily my favorite production from Netflix. Really well done show, the scares were legit, but it told a really good story. Now go read the book, you assholes.

Moa
So I finished the show and I liked it. The final episode was clever, emotionally satisfying, and excellent. Spoiler I particularly enjoyed that the house was not necessarily evil and many of the ghosts were not malevolent. I think I can better identify my initial reservations about the show and it is basically about problems with information and tension. Throughout the show, it feels like the viewer's perspective is split between Steve and whoever is the principal character of the episode. The primary mysteries are all questions that are unresolved for Steve: What was up with the house? What happened that night? What is currently happening? Other than the final question, there is very little tension because in the first case the viewer knows the answer and it takes Steve a long time to catch up. With the second question, neither the viewer nor Steve have all the information, but Hugh does and is just frustratingly holding out on us as well as Steve. We aren't waiting for a mystery to be solved, we are just waiting to be told the answer. Again, there is very little tension here. So there is only significant tension in the present-day timeline, which moves glacially slow and ultimately leads to the one place it was obviously going. Mr.Vic20
My wife and I finished this up last weekend. It solid, and apparently its aimed at middle age people, as apposed to most horror aimed at teens/ weekend theater crowds. That said, its clear to me that like video games, where RPG elements have taken over every genre, "family dysfunction/inde style life drama" is being applied to all sorts of genres in TV & Film. That's not a knock on it mind you, I just noted its prevalence. Also, I thought the final episode crammed too much in. Too many spoilers to discuss (although, are they, this one didn't hold too many surprises that weren't sufficiently telegraphed, IMO) in detail, but let's just say that a pair of characters motives required a rapid acceptance of events that made me think, yeah that's how typical humans handle a crazy situation. skillzdadirecta
I just finished it last night with the girl and while I enjoyed the series overall, that last episode and how it resolved the series left a lot to be desired. The last episode turned the series into "spooky This is Us" at the last minute 4 hours ago, Mr.Vic20 said: My wife and I finished this up last weekend. I don't know if I agree with this though, it was my teenaged niece that brought the show to my family's attention, first getting my parents to binge it who then recommended it to me
