I work with a lot of engineers that come to conclusions that only make sense if you're an engineer and don't understand people or real life

I worked on editing software once that was very powerful but the U.I. was terrible and unintuitive. One of the I.T. guys told me that it was designed by engineers who really had no experience or concern with ease of use and that the U.I. only makes sense to other engineers.

Product designers are the first to get skimped out on. I’m overhauling our old system and having an expert designer at the helm has made my life so much easier. Some of these designs were made by…. Me! As a product manager with little design experience except when I was a developer. Utter madness.

Gen Z on TikTok (especially women) seem to love Walz. One of the things that appears to stick with them is he is the "dad they lost to the Trump cult," but if things were different. Basically a good example of a kind, caring, masculine guy.

EDIT - In fact!

This is what I like about him too. He projects a confident, positive, and non-toxic masculinity. He’s not a creepy weirdo who makes his son monitor his porn usage.

Kamala Harris set up a virtual primary for her VP contenders—and Tim Walz excited voters like nobody else.

Walz was a graduate of Camp Wellstone, set up after Paul Wellstone’s death to train new progressives.

My little alternate history is that if Wellstone doesn’t die, he easily defeats Bush in 2004 and America never has that disastrous Bush second term OR Trump.

Lutz also claims that "weird" isn't really permeating the general discourse outside of the online space.

Personally, I think that it's getting a little played out at this point and should probably be dialed back a bit, along with the entire "couch" thing.  They're great for rallies to get the partisans worked up into a frothing lather, but let's not go overboard, shall we?

Quote

When US presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her running mate, it meant something different to the varsity Valorant esports team from Apple Valley High School in Minnesota. It meant they'd now been endorsed by the man who might soon become the vice president of the USA.

"Congratulations on an undefeated season and winning the Minnesota Varsity League State Championship in Valorant!" Walz wrote in a letter shared on the Apple Valley High School Esports Twitter account in 2022. The idea of a state governor knowing what Valorant is, even if just for the time it takes to sign a letter passing across his desk on a Tuesday morning, seems wild to think about, but welcome to the 2020s I guess.

Walz went on to applaud the "mental fortitude and tactical planning" of the Minnesota Varsity League, writing, "As the opportunities for students to engage in competitive multiplayer gaming continue to expand, extracurricular activities and social opportunities should also expand. With esports on the rise, I am extremely proud of you and the role you have taken on to grow esports participation at Apple Valley High School and in Minnesota. You are at the helm of transforming a hobby into a potentially life-changing career in a new and innovative realm of sports."

My wife lost a dad and a mom and step dad to Fox News so when she saw that trending on TikTok it really hit home

Yep, I agree as well. It's a good attack to use within the base (and a little bit to wink at in the mainstream), but shouldn't be overdone. However—and I'm basing this just off of their messaging so far—the Harris team seems to have a pretty good grasp of the zeitgeist and how to message things. So I'm not too worried about them going too far in on it. Even their focus on the future (and avoiding responding directly to Trump's attacks) is a good move so far. Yes, you need to paint Trump and Vance as the past, and strange, and wrong, etc, etc, but you most importantly need to paint a vision of the future to vote for.

Betcha JD Vance, the youngest guy in this whole thing, has no idea what Valorant is. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't know E-Sports is a thing.

He's too busy telling his kid to shut up about Pokémon to know about what his kid will like next.

The “weird” thing likely works online because social media has created self reinforcing echo chambers. If you’re “skeptical” about whether the earth is a globe and that gravity is real, you can find like minded people really fucking quickly on TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, etc., and that shit is a lot fringier than a lot of what passes for normal in online conservative spaces. A non trivial amount of those people have had loved ones either disconnect from them or just not engage on those topics, so having them called out as absurd in the spaces where those POVs are safest is probably a smart thing to do.

IRL I don’t know how much juice is to be had from the weird squeeze but Democrats and progressives should be louder about the extent to which some of the things they believe in are actually very popular broadly despite what traditional conservative media outlets say. Most people think kids should be able to be fed at school without the satisfaction of a job well done that allowed them to pay for it themselves, most people with menstrual cycles appreciate that tampons / hygiene products being available without having to pay for them or make.a scene is a good thing, etc. Never stop reminding people that almost everyone supports broader background checks, that the border is not “open” / that Trump specifically called for a bipartisan border security bill to be nuked so he could beat off to a hyperbolized border crisis, that abortion is healthcare, etc. These are easy wins.

I can agree to this if you agree that they should start playing "Down Rodeo" at the Harris rallies.

These are exactly the reasons why I want the Harris campaign to start doing town halls with voters right the hell now - to get this exact message out there as well as to articulate actual family-oriented policy initiatives like the expanded CTC, universal Pre-K care, etc.

Exactly. I think they’ve recently (as in the last 15 years or so) been so afraid of the conservative clapback and they really need to get over it. Jesse Waters would rage stroke about a program that fixed all potholes in the country, generated 10,000 domestic jobs to do it even if it could be done without raising taxes a dime, so…who fucking cares? You can’t win with these people, there’s no point in trying to counter what they say.

"They go low, we go high" was always dumb AF. I'm glad we're past it.
