Random Mobile Gaming Thread - did you know Netflix has about 100 free games included now?

Jeeze with all the non-e3 stuff this slipped to page 5 quick.

Anyway, I wanted to call out Lucky Luna, available exclusively on Netflix for Android/ios:

PLAY.GOOGLE.COM

An enchanting adventure

APPS.APPLE.COM

‎Available exclusively for Netflix members. Guide Luna through hidden dungeons and mythical temples to unlock the secrets of her past in this platformer inspired by Japanese folklore. Each level introduces...

I’ve tried quite a few platformers that tried to employ a unique touchscreen control mechanic for this type of game to make it not awful, to various levels of usually not very much success. Luckily we have gamepads on platformers and some real solid console-like ones now.

But here is a touchscreen controlled platformer that WORKS. That, for its design, would play worse with a gamepad. The mechanic involves just swiping left and right but what makes it work and a little different is the speed based momentum of how your swipe pushes the character along.

You aren’t going a step per swipe or whatever, it feels very analog and allows them to deploy precise platforming challenges that never feel compromised by being touch controlled.

This works here because the game itself is completely designed around the mechanic. You don’t jump in this per se, your “jump” equivalent here is being able to adjust while falling. The game typically is about falling downwards and this allows the mechanic to work perfectly in line with the the gameplay.

It’s all quite clever and well designed. I don’t think they solved anything that can be copied per se, it just works for THIS game. You could make more like it but they would just be sequels or clones.

As always with Netflix it’s free if you have a subscription and well worth checking out. It looks a little better on iphone because these are some chonky pixels but I still prefer playing on ipad with the pen, just really smooth and nice feeling to play, and something a little different while keeping the kind of core platformer design that is my bread and butter.

New on Netflix:

MEDIA.NETFLIX.COM

I checked this one out because I remembered @Commissar SFLUFAN mentioning its sequel in the next fest thread so I assumed the original must be of some regard!

Im playing another poke around the tablet game atm and need to finish its story but this is definitely after that. It’s fantastic on the ipad and seems very clever and quite captivating.

@TheLeon might like this one?

Critic Reviews

33bits - Jesús Díaz-Suelto Berrueco - Spanish - 95 / 100

The Case of the Golden Idol offers us one of the best recent investigative stories. The main gameplay mechanic is your brain and how you can deduce everything. It's an absolutely brilliant game and I wish more like it came out.

Cubed3 - Michael McCann - 7 / 10

The ability to get on with, enjoy and progress through this title makes one feel intelligent, and there's even a touch of smugness that's attached to that feeling. There is nothing else in the whodunit genre that represents what it was like to be Father Dowling on an intellectual level any better.

Eurogamer - Alexis Ong - Recommended

Witty, observationalist writing and a hands-off approach to deduction elevate this excellent period murder-mystery to a singular work.

Expansive - Sam Diglett - Loved

The Curse of the Golden Idol keeps you guessing right up until the end. It smartly connects its cast and cases, really immersing you in its mysteries and intricacies. Some minor UI issues aside, this is a must play for adventure game enthusiasts or anyone looking for a good, memorable journey.

Fintendo - Antti Saavalainen - Finnish - 4 / 5

"Murders and mysteries in pre-industrial England."

GBAtemp - Stephen Malone - 10 / 10

Case of the Golden Idol is an innovative and truly engaging detective masterpiece.

Game Rant - Sam Stewart - 4.5 / 5

The Case of the Golden Idol's clever mysteries leave players feeling like Victorian super sleuths.

GameLuster - Jess Clayton-Berry - 10 / 10

Everything that I love about Return of the Obra Dinn is present in The Case of the Golden Idol and more. Things are never as straightforward as they seem, and the story is so absorbing that I once again spent all night delving into each case. My only wish is that the game was longer, as I eventually completed it in four hours. But when the only flaw is that you wanted more, can it really be considered a flaw?

Guardian - Simon Parkin - 5 / 5

A treasure inspires murder, and your job as detective is to piece together the crime in this addictive 18th-century whodunnit

Hey Poor Player - Andrew Thornton - 4 / 5

While I do think there was room for some additional quality of life features here, and it sometimes gets a bit too clever for its own good, The Case of the Golden Idol took me back to my childhood, reminding me of the puzzles I once loved while putting its own spin on things that would only work in a video game. This idol might be cursed, but you should still take a chance on it.

IGN Italy - Stefano Castagnola - Italian - 8.5 / 10

As a debut title from a new indie team, it's difficult to imagine how things could have gone better: Gray Color Games has indeed managed to create a charming and well-crafted investigative adventure that every wannabe detective should really consider playing.

IGN Italy - Stefano Castagnola - Italian - 8 / 10

The Spider of Lanka doesn't really try to change the base game's formula in the slightest but it didn't need to, either: instead it brings some quality additions to an already great game.

Impulsegamer - Gareth Newnham - 4.5 / 5

Curse of the Golden Idol is a game that every would-be detective and Sherlock Holmes fan needs to play.

Metro GameCentral - GameCentral - 8 / 10

Another great indie detective game that not only makes solving crimes fun and interesting but has some surprisingly good storytelling to tie everything together.

Nerfeados - Oscar Nino - Spanish - Unscored

The Case of the Golden Idol is a brilliant game.

Instead of relying on complex puzzles to try and confuse the user, Color Gray makes everything about observation and just sheer analysis to create a brilliant experience for the player. This game is ideal for fans of masterpieces like Return to the Obra Dinn.

Nindie Spotlight - 7.8 / 10

Truly a bit of an odd bird, with its own pretty minimalist style on point-and-click adventuring, but daring to tell an overarching story its own way

NintendoWorldReport - Willem Hilhorst - 9.5 / 10

The stories can be gruesome and horrific at times, but that also makes them intriguing puzzleboxes to sit down and solve. At times while playing I looked up at the clock and realized I had been squinting at the screen and was lost in thought solving a puzzle for nearly an hour. The year of narrative bangers just keeps on rolling and if you are even remotely interested in solving a good mystery, The Case of the Golden Idol should be at the top of your list!.

Oyungezer Online - Eser Güven - Turkish - 9 / 10

The Case of the Golden Idol is one of the biggest surprises of this year. I liked the demo a lot, but I honestly wasn't expecting the full game to go far beyond that and offer a completely original and memorable experience like Return to Obra Dinn. You'll be sorry if you miss it.

PC Gamer - Christopher Livingston - 89 / 100

A challenging and inventive set of mysteries to solve tied together with a brilliant storyline.

Polygon - Nicole Carpenter - Unscored

The Case of the Golden Idol is a game that makes me feel like a TV detective, slapping photos on a wall and drawing red lines between them. Those strings of yarn crisscross throughout my notebook, connecting characters and murder weapons and motives. It’s easy to get sucked into small details looking for a lead, but the feeling it gives when I’ve locked in the correct answers… It’s like I’m the most brilliant person on earth — even if just for a moment. The Case of the Golden Idol, like other deep detective games, expands past its own boundaries and into the pages of my notebook, leaving me thinking about its clues long after I’ve closed the game.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Katharine Castle - Unscored

This handsome detective game isn't quite the second coming of Return Of The Obra Dinn, but it does come pretty damn close. An entertaining story told through a dozen murders, The Case Of The Golden Idol is a mystery well worth solving.

Screen Rant - Christopher Teuton - 4 / 5

For situations where players have exhausted all their available options and brainpower, The Case of the Golden Idol also offers a fantastic in-game hint system. It doesn't overreach and offer solutions blatantly, but instead uses phrases like "consider the food on the dinner table, and everyone's personal eating habits" to point confused players in the right direction. None of the puzzles presented in the game are impossibly difficult (except for one late game chapter which suddenly threw maths in, but that could be my own personal shortcomings) and the story it tells about the golden idol itself is delightfully weird and fleshed out despite the game's short runtime. For anyone looking for 3-6 hours of cryptic crossword-like murder mysteries, The Case of the Golden Idol is a solid choice.

Softpedia - Cosmin Vasile - 8.5 / 10

The Case of the Golden Idol is a tight adventure with good mechanics, excellent design for all the scenes, and great presentation. Players should try to play a sequence at a time, savor the clues and avoid relying on the hint system as much as possible.

The Games Machine - Claudio Magistrelli - Italian - 8.5 / 10

The Case of the Golden Idol is an excellent debut. Color Gray has learned the lesson of Return of the Obra Dinn and reinterpreted it with its own style. The cases to be solved are well thought out and to come to grips with puzzles that require deduction and intelligence rather than skill with the classic mechanics of the genre is quite satisfying. The Latvian developer duo in his first game shows they have personality, including in the graphic style that does not mind being disturbing and in the appropriate background music, all of which conveniently mystery-themed.

TrueGaming - Arabic - 9 / 10

The game excels at having an interconnected narrative, which greatly motivates you to delve into deep thinking to solve every mystery and unravelling all secrets.

WayTooManyGames - Leonardo Faria - 7 / 10

I will commend The Case of the Golden Idol for being an excruciatingly smart game with a neat method of developing its lore and world-building, but its mystery solving gameplay loop, while engaging for those into whodunits, features some flaws worth pointing out. Solving a case is really rewarding, but getting stuck in a particular puzzle feels punishing, with the game nearly starting to treat you in a condescending way if you start using its (tiresome) hint system too often.

Worth Playing - Andreas Salmen - 8.8 / 10

The Case of Golden Idol is an engaging adventure game that completely won me over, even though it's not remotely what I thought it would be. It's more about observation than actual detective work, but it requires more deduction skills than many games of its kind would feel comfortable to burden the player with. It's very much in the vein of Return of the Obra Dinn, where it's more about your logical deduction skills than about pretend detective play. If that's your cup of tea, The Case of the Golden Idol is an easy recommendation. Given the choice, I would opt for the PC version, especially if you don't intend to play the game in the Switch's docked mode.

video games are good - Nathan Hermanson - 9 / 10

Color Gray Games could never release another game and they'd still be a team I'd remember years down the line. Case of the Golden Idol is an incredible first showing that may just revolutionize the mystery game genre in the way that classics like Return of the Obra Dinn did at launch. When I was done with it all, I was left with this hunger to create art, because that's what happens when I consume a piece of truly great art.

I’m not generally much of a point and click adventure guy, but I heard enough good things about the PC release that I’m willing to give it a shot.

This seems a bit more of a puzzle game than your usual adventure title . u will c

I played through the first few scenarios and started to “get” it, but it mostly feels like a really concentrated dose of the kind of thing I don’t like about adventure games. Like sure, it seems fair to call it a puzzle game, but I have a really hard time with these types of logic puzzles once they start to get remotely complex. I’ll give it a little more time because it is really interesting, but this might be a simple “not for me”.
