thewhyteboar
The sequel has already bene filmed and will be released a few months after I guess. Parts 3 and 4 might be coming out later as well. I've never been the biggest Costner fan, but if he single-handedly revitalizes the western genre...
Derek
I wonder who the armorer is.
Commissar SFLUFAN
So this is why he burned his "Yellowstone" bridges, eh? This genuinely does look really quite good!

That’s how I understand it. This is his passion project, and as soon as he had the juice to get it off the ground, he noped out of Yellowstone as fast as possible.
TwinIon
This looks like he was jealous that he couldn't star in 1883, so he made his own. It could well just be YouTube compression, but even at 4K something about this trailer doesn't look quite right. I feel like it's not very consistent in it's color or noise or sharpness or something. Hard to put my finger on it. Trailer didn't really sell me, but I'm always down for a solid western and it sure seems like Costner cares a whole lot about this, so hopefully it pays off. Best
Always enjoyed Costner and this looks great.
Greatoneshere
I imagine how much you'll enjoy this will depend on how much you enjoyed Costner's three previous directorial efforts Dances with Wolves, The Postman and Open Range (all three of which he also starred in, as is the case here). Or how much you enjoyed projects he starred in that he was also heavily involved in shepherding like Wyatt Earp, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Waterworld or Thirteen Days despite not writing or directing them. I don't watch Yellowstone but I do think it's a super dick move of him to leave the show midway through season 5 when the show was always planned to just be 6 seasons. He could have easily finished the show and then made this but instead chose to screw over the cast, crew and fans of Yellowstone instead. GeneticBlueprint
I cannot tell what the story of this movie is. Also the score is horrifically generic. Like absolutely disgusting and offensively so. The cast looks great, though. 21 minutes ago, Greatoneshere said: I don't watch Yellowstone but I do think it's a super dick move of him to leave the show midway through season 5 when the show was always planned to just be 6 seasons. I'm saying this just based on clips I've seen and the general vibe I get of the fanbase, but nothing of value was lost. But I do sympathize with the cast and crew. 22 minutes ago, Greatoneshere said: I imagine how much you'll enjoy this will depend on how much you enjoyed Costner's three previous directorial efforts Dances with Wolves, The Postman and Open Range (all three of which he also starred in, as is the case here). Well, his directorial track record appears pretty good so that's a plus. I remember really liking Open Range but I haven't seen it since I worked at the video store as a teenager around its release date.

Yeah, I agree, his track record overall is pretty good - the only question will be if he's still got it since it's been 20 years since he directed Open Range in 2003. Here's to hoping this is good. Best
BTW, he will always be Robin Hood in my eyes. I saw that in the theater as a kid.
thewhyteboar
I support stars using their star power to make a personal project. This seems like something that has been wanting to make since the 90s. It should certainly be watchable, especially with that cast.
Mercury33
Reading through that list of movies it dawned on me that I think I generally like pretty much everything Costner does. Even Waterworld and The Postman are guilty pleasures haha. He’s like a lesser Tom Cruise haha.

sblfilms
Got a chance to see part 1 last week and given how Yellowstone has gone off the rails, I’m very glad he ditched it in favor of this. If you enjoy the genre, you will probably like this entry. Not his best directorial effort, but solid.
SoberChef
Truthfully, between 'Dances with Wolves' & 'Wyatt Earp', I am SO down for another grand western adventure w/ Costner in the lead (also THAT FREAKING CAST!!) so yeah, definitely will be tuning in!
TheLeon
Kinda feels like the most generic genre exercise I can imagine, but I’ve never been much of a Western guy.
thewhyteboar
It got kind of a mixed reception at Cannes, but here's a pretty positive review from a writer I like: Horizon: An American Saga review: a throwback western | Sight and Sound WWW.BFI.ORG.UK Almost every genre cliché is lovingly excavated for the first chapter in Kevin Costner’s epic four-part western, but its traditional approach is part of its charm. TwinIon
I was not a fan at all. Way too long, the villians are way over written, everyone else is probably underwritten. There's no visual charm to speak of, too often rendering incredible landscapes a backlot feeling. It's a western going through the motions without a sense of purpose. I was quite dissapointed. 1

How does it fair to Costner's three previous directorial efforts (Dances with Wolves, The Postman and Open Range), if you've seen those? Just seeing where you stand overall with his skills as a director what would you rate/rank them vs. this? Also would it be better if you had all four parts to watch it all at once or unsalvageable do you think? I'm not very invested in this project either way but I am curious. It's been a long time since I've seen his other efforts, and I don't think I've ever seen Open Range, but I remember Dances with Wolves fondly. I think this one just fails with pacing. It's spending a ton of time showing you the same thing over and over again. Characters are all paper thin, and you know them basically right away, which is probably fine for a western so intent on cliches. It just can't justify how long they spend on any individual scene or sequence. Pretty much every single one could be cut in half without losing anything. There's probably a decent movie in this one if you edit it way down.
silentbob
Open Range is a great movie with some great gunplay. Was kinda hoping to hear more of the same for this release before eventually checking it out at home

thewhyteboar
Too bad. It’s tough to see a personal, original project (something that’s not a remake or ip slop) fail. Hopefully it gets some legs when it goes to streaming.
