Kal-El814
I have never seen Wicked, but I know its rep among musical theater heads is that it falters in the second act. Kinda funny that they're splitting it into two movies with that in mind.

thewhyteboar
We lost something when we lost Technicolor.
LazyPiranha
Seems like a weird choice to consciously hide the fact that this is a musical, especially given that it’s already a famous musical. Didn’t work out great for Mean Girls.

silentbob
I’ve seen the Toronto stage production and had Steve(Marcy’s first husband) from Married With Children as The Wizard. Will probably check this out when it hits theatres and treat my mom
Best
I noticed Ariana right away. She has an amazing voice so it's a good pick.

I definitely had a moment where I thought “why did they hire this lookalike instead of just getting Grande?”
Keyser_Soze
If you think Grande looks like a different person wait till you see what Cynthia Erivo looks like!
Spawn_of_Apathy
Oh, this is based on a musical? Ok. That makes more sense. When I first saw the trailer I had the same reaction as others like this, like Solo or the latest Willy Wonka movie, “who the fuck asked for this?” One thing that came to mind was ‘why do we keep humanizing characters that were only ever meant to be an allegory for pure evil?’
LazyPiranha
I think you can make an interesting origin story for a villain, but the villains that have been getting movies recently? Cruella DeVille wanted to skin a hundred puppies for a coat. It’s hard to make an origin for that.

Keyser_Soze
This looks like it could maybe peel some people off of Harry Potter. From what I know, which is nothing, the various creators of Wicked (Winnie Holzman, Gregory Maguire, Stephen Schwartz) haven't turned into terrible people. Maybe @Greatoneshere has done his research on this. He won't watch the trailer though.

As long as it keeps the music and is fairly faithful to the original story it'll have every theater kid and musical nut watching it in theaters 10 times opening weekend. This movie only has to be mildly competent and it'll print money.
sblfilms
The DGA theaters are legitimately the best rooms I’ve ever seen a film in.
ihavebigtitties Posted yesterday at 12:06 AM Share Posted yesterday at 12:06 AM All the songs people like are in the first act so the first movie is gonna be huge. Second act is coming next year but expect a much more muted reaction to it in comparison, the drop off in quality between the two halves is significant.
Greatoneshere Posted yesterday at 12:52 AM Share Posted yesterday at 12:52 AM I saw this on stage and it was fine. Not sure why it's so popular, just wasn't my thing.

Broadway was a bit more "traditional" before it.
