Commissar SFLUFAN
An Update on The Last of Us Online || Naughty Dog WWW.NAUGHTYDOG.COM Quote We realize many of you have been anticipating news around the project that we’ve been calling The Last of Us Online. There’s no easy way to say this: We’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to stop development on that game. We know this news will be tough for many, especially our dedicated The Last of Us Factions community, who have been following our multiplayer ambitions ardently. We’re equally crushed at the studio as we were looking forward to putting it in your hands. We wanted to share with you some background of how we came to this decision. The multiplayer team has been in pre-production with this game since we were working on The Last of Us Part II – crafting an experience we felt was unique and had tremendous potential. As the multiplayer team iterated on their concept for The Last of Us Online during this time, their vision crystalized, the gameplay got more refined and satisfying, and we were enthusiastic about the direction in which we were headed. In ramping up to full production, the massive scope of our ambition became clear. To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage. We are immensely proud of everyone at the studio that touched this project. The learnings and investments in technology from this game will carry into how we develop our projects and will be invaluable in the direction we are headed as a studio. We have more than one ambitious, brand new single player game that we're working on here at Naughty Dog, and we cannot wait to share more about what comes next when we’re ready. Until then, we’re incredibly thankful to our community for your support throughout the years.

SaysWho?
I don't mind multiplayer from them, but I'm totally fine with Uncharted 4 stuff -- an addition, something fun to go too, but nothing I have to invest so heavily in for years on end if I don't want to. SaysWho?
Also, this needs more attention: they're working on more than one single-player game.
Best
Just now, SaysWho? said: Also, this needs more attention: they're working on more than one single-player game. I just hope they are working on TLOU 3 because part 2's ending was awful. I don't want that to be the way the series ends.
Dre801
Are they gonna actually show up this gen outside of game remasters?

I'm gunna say yes they will release one of their new games before this gen is over.
TwinIon
Seems like it was probably the best choice for the studio and it’s the direction that I’d personally prefer them to take. The thing that I find interesting is that they were able to make this decision as Sony has made a big deal about wanting to go towards live service games, but also after it’s revealed how much trouble Bungie has been having lately. I would love to know what the calculus with dealing with Sony was in this case. Naughty Dog is arguably the best single player dev in the business. I look forward to whatever games they end up making.

crispy4000
Leaks and rumors have illustrated Naughty Dog doesn't jive well with outside studios handling their IP. Putting it to rest if they can't do it themselves is the right call.
SuperSpreader
Naughty Dog making an online game means having gameplay, something they don't do very well.
Brick
The multiplayer in the first game was really good, so this could have been an awesome expansion of that. Shame. If it would have impacted their single player focused stuff though, then yeah probably best to shelve it. Maybe if they pulled back the scope a bit though Part II could have had an online mode. They should bring what they have to TLOUII, because originally they were working on a multiplayer mode for the game. Obviously someone told them to make it bigger and make it a GAAS so instead of getting anything now people get nothing. Seems shitty. Spawn_of_Apathy
Good. These TLOU and Uncharted remasters and remakes won’t make themselves.
