You know what would speed up the adoption and use of this technology? Paying legal immigrants (or even Americans I guess) a fair wage for the work they do.

At the same time, I can see a future where a lot of food is grown in greenhouse conditions, closer to city centers. This is the kind of tech that will allow us to squeeze more food grown into a smaller space.

There's a place on the east coast doing something similar. Farming in a layered building - setting things up to get the ideal light, air, and water with no pollutants.

 

 

Now grow meat.

Robotics in agriculture is on the verge of a revolution. The challenge is going outside in the fields which are far more difficult, but it's going to happen. (Controlled environments like the one in this video will be part of the story, but it will really take off as the tech moves more and more into the field.)

I also have to wonder what the energy requirements/efficiency on something like this is, not just running the robots but the fact they are using grow lights instead of you know the sun like they do on farms.

Yeah there were some places in Encinitas doing hydroponic vegetable growing and they were selling it to whole foods. But none with robots. Robots will obviously increase productivity since they can farm 24/7.

Well increasing the scale to an industrial level, would likely be large green houses that would use sun light,

There are only a few crops that require hand picking anymore, most of them are already to the point where it is just one guy driving a machine over crops. Although I did just recently lose a worker to go work in a weed farm harvesting weed.

FWIW, I have it on very good authority that the ag industry is very interested in far higher levels of automation and robotics than we have now.
