5timechamp Posted June 22 Share Posted June 22 That was definitely a good show… I enjoy the way they visually realize “concepts” of self and stuff of that nature. There was also a clear moment where it references other popular kids programs for laughs, in my theater you could definitely hear the adults laughing at the references and not the kids. I think this is also one of the more “recent” kids movie/program where the protagonist does something legitimately bad and doesnt get caught/discovered to suffer consequences (it was a nice betrayal of expectation) It taps on the “puberty” button too, which was surprising because when Turning Red did the same it became a mini tragedy.. maybe the “Red Panda” was too much 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I liked it a lot, but it feels more like a movie for kids who grew up with the first movie as opposed to a new movie for younger kids now. I don’t think my four year old got much out of it other than the occasional slapstick gag. Of the modern Pixar movies, it seems to have the least for younger kids going for it. SaysWho? Posted July 4 Share Posted July 4 I fucking loved it, possibly as much as the first even though there's a newness vibe I'm aware of. The only Pixar sequels I thoroughly enjoyed were Toy Story 2-4, but Inside Out now sits in that hemisphere. Within the first 20 minutes, I had a good idea as to how the movie would evolve. It's Spoiler basically the same premise as the first movie -- a person is the sum of their emotions, to which none of the are useless. But it finds new places to go with a well-meaning villain who has the right idea in a changing Riley but goes about it completely the wrong way. While I loved the idea of Riley leaving home and going through some kind of depression at the end of the first movie, which was high stakes, I felt the more pre-teen fitting in drama here worked even if it's lower stakes in real life. End of the day, the stakes in her mind felt just as big as the first film. The added emotions were fun, and we got more time to see the full original group together in this film. I wish sports movies would do a better job of portraying their sports more accurately. An 8th grader scoring any goals in a game against high schoolers is always going to get noticed. The idea that she needs to score 3 goals in a scrimmage to impress them was a little silly. They aren't really looking at who scores anyway... for the most part... they are looking more broadly at your overall game and how your skillset would slot into the roster they are constructing. First, it's nowhere near as good as the first movie, but I knew that it couldn't be given basically none of the same writers or directors are involved. However, the movie was good. It was fun. I enjoyed it. But it has very little lasting impact. I was surprised how little insight the film provided given how strong the messages were in the first movie. That movie could make adults cry but this movie seemed to make basic, simplistic points by comparison. I also didn't like that it basically recycles the same plot as the first movie, except instead of just Joy and Sadness trying to get back, it's all five of the original emotions. I also felt that the exploration of puberty was pretty weak and not really there and the dichotomy between her old friends being ridiculous and her potential new friends/teammates being super serious about high school hockey was silly and basic. The film also felt "small", where it just happens over one weekend regarding a hockey camp. The first film covered a big event in Riley's life, this felt like . . . not that big a deal. It's also less funny than the first and the movie moves way too fast - in the first movie you have some buildup to punchlines like Cloud Town or the dream theatre. Here everything just repeats those beats but faster and with less impact. TL;DR: Inside Out 2 gets a solid 6.5/10 from me, but a weak 6.5/10 and it's becoming clear Pixar has lost a lot of top level talent and isn't the studio it once was. I haven’t seen the first and didn’t need any explanation here that the movie doesn’t efficiently provide in the first few minutes. I found plenty to relate to here re: stuck in an anxiety loop of performance measuring. Loved the characters. The animation was beautiful. Loved the metaphors. Even the goofy pun ones.
