Guest
I was waiting for CV’s annual post about the Canadian tax return filing system. Thanks bud.

One of the most popular methods in recent years is a site called SimpleTax.ca (free). All you do is go in, put your CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) info received from them in your previous assessment, and click "autofill." It then fills in all of the data received by your employers, investment plans, retirement plans, etc. So for 80-90% of the population, you just review it and click "submit." Then 2 weeks later you get a deposit in your bank account with your refund (or you pay the government online via your bank). It's a great system and it gets better each year! Amazatron
“Here’s the truth. For far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and, frankly, I’m tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it. CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties. So you can’t just say that today someone is looking at me strange and that I am trying to make myself look pleasant. You have to say that this person is looking at me strange, I am not comfortable with it, and I am going to talk to them and ask them why. Because that is the right you have.”

The chants included: “Burn the Koran,” “Ilhan Omar go to hell,” and “Shame on you terrorists.” The speech took place about a week after the March 15 shootings by a white-nationalist-inspired gunman at two New Zealand mosques that left 50 people dead. Omar used the opportunity to make the case for Muslim activism. “Many people expect our community to feel like it needs to hide every time something happens,” she said. “But repeatedly we have shown them that we are not to be bullied, not to be threatened, we are not to be terrorized, we are strong and resilient, and we will always show up to be ourselves because we know we have a right to a dignified existence and a dignified life.” Omar noted the “very fascinating people outside” and said she found the irony “very entertaining” that many say Islam oppresses women but that “today they gather outside to protest a Muslim woman who is in Congress.” She said that “tragic nightmare” of the shootings in New Zealand was not shocking or surprising to many in the room. “Many of us were holding our breath waiting for something like this to happen,” she said, pointing directly at President Trump in assigning the blame. “Many of us knew this would get worse, we finally have a leader, a world leader, in the White House who publicly says ‘Islam hates us,’ who fuels hate against Muslims, who thinks it is okay to speak about a faith and a whole community in a way that is dehumanizing, vilifying and doesn’t understand — or at least makes us want to think he doesn’t understand — the consequences his words might have,” she said. Omar added that she thinks Trump knew the impact of his words: “He knows there are people he thinks he can influence to threaten our lives, diminish our influence … but love trumps hate.” Omar argued that even a “good Muslim” may find roadblocks in the United States — and that that was the moment to stand up for one’s rights. “Once you are willing to stand up for yourself … then others will show up for you,” she said. She ticked off several examples, such as a Muslim being unable to find a place to pray in a hospital, even in “a country that was founded on religious liberty.” “To me, I say, raise hell,” she said. “Make people uncomfortable.” At this point, she uttered the words that raised controversy. We highlighted the passage in boldface. RedSoxFan9
"CAIR was founded after 9/11, because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties," Omar said in a video shared on social media while lamenting the "second-class" treatment of Muslim Americans. She said often "when Islam is mentioned" in America, people are "only talking about terrorists."
SimpleG
My 2 cents Her speech doesn’t feel like it’s down playing 9/11. It makes mention of it and moves on . Just saying “9/11” is enough, we all know what it is and what she means. It feels like people want Muslims to apologize to the US every time it comes up. I do disagree with her though . Just because she has risen up as an Islamic women doesn’t mean it Islam can’t be oppressive to women.
CitizenVectron
Yeah, she definitely phrased that poorly. I get what she was saying, but her choice of words was lacking, to put it kindly.

She's absolutely terrible with her wording in most things and it's why the right is able to weaponize her statements so easily. I do understand the point she is trying to make, but, as you say, her phrasing is just poorly chosen. Words and phrasing matter, not just the context within, and she really needs to figure that out ASAP, IMO.

Suggesting Ilhan Omar has to speak perfectly, all the time, without fail, so that the Republicans don't use her "poorly chosen" words against her or the Democrats is similar to saying a woman can't wear certain kinds of clothes lest it invites sexual misconduct against them. I agree she's a politician, she should be well-spoken, but the double standard has got to stop.

RedSoxFan9
Obama passing the heritage foundation healthcare plan didn’t stop people from calling him a socialist. Then we come back to the point I made originally when the first time she "misspoke" came up - what should she do? I mean, what are you suggesting? "She's absolutely terrible at wording in most things" is not true - the few things the Republicans can take they do take and will stretch into something ridiculous out of context. Republicans in government have and continue to say terrible things, much worse than anything Ilhan Omar has said, yet the Republicans were able to get the Democrats to work with them together to pass a House resolution because of what Ilhan Omar said?? Are you fucking kidding me? It's an outrage. Go back to her "dual allegiances" quote. It was worded completely fine - the Republican propoganda machine turned it into something else. Again, what is she supposed to do? Apologize every time something she says something that's poorly worded (which is not often) that the Republicans twist into something else? How about the Democrats not cowtow to Republicans and unite behind their freshman Congresswoman, like Republicans do for their own all the time? Ilhan Omar already speaks well enough, and certainly better than many politicians if you've seen her in committee videos, yet she's scrutinized to a ridiculous degree and then we perpetuate the problem by saying: "Ilhan needs to speak better" rather than the problem which is Republican hypocrisy and anti-Muslim propoganda.
