Reputator
Look, all I see is a dangerous attention seeker being fed attention. Maybe "deplatforming" him won't make him go away, but CNN didn't need to air it, give him an extremely agreeable audience, and further damage themselves for the sake of discrediting him. He was already discredited, his views have already been aired. It helps no one but Trump to signal boost it.

How in the fuck does a good idea matter when the other side’s tactic is to create a complete alternate reality of truth?! They don’t even have ideas to combat against! They all do -- Trump just takes it to another level. Mass delusions have always been a thing, and probably always will be. I’m fine with well intentioned people having conversations, but it does not create an echo chamber to not have someone you know 100% for sure is not well intentioned spread lies for a couple hours. That only further confuses and divides people, it does not bring anyone together. They will fall for the lies or they won’t but if you get trapped in the right wing alternate reality in America you are going to end trapped in the echo chamber to end all echo chambers and this sort of propaganda opportunity only serves to assist in that process. Kamusha
Whether it should happen or not is its own debate but deplatforming absolutely does work. When's the last time you heard about Milo Yiannopoulos? 2
stepee
Oh yeah it absolutely can work. And the idea that what we really need is a constant stream of horrible opinions being fed to us is one I just can’t get behind. If a republican wants to get up on stage and explain why their plan to make health care more affordable would work and lay out the plan of action and explain how it makes sense, for example, Im fine with that. But that isn’t what any of this ever is and definitely not ever what it is when people talk about deplatforming. There is never a need to hear divisive lies that twist peoples realities and turn them against each other, and that is Trumps entire fucking thing.

Reputator
Winning the Presidency is a popularity contest. Pure and simple. Why did Trump win the nomination over other GOP members, when their viewpoints weren't that different? Trump could command attention. He was better at the popularity game. It's hardly your policies that get you elected. And by giving Trump attention you help him win by exactly the means that won him his first term. 1
MarSolo
I’m in agreement that deplatforming works for the reasons listed above. Shit, remember Madison Cawthorne? On the other hand, we’ve been getting a “absence makes the heart grow fonder” vibe with Trump, in that there were people that were genuinely thinking “were things really that bad under Trump?” (spoiler alert: yes they were, there was that whole pandemic thing he fucked up) I think the Dems need Trump as the looming boogeyman to bring out moderate voters against him, and this town hall, his video depositions, and plenty of more to come are going to be YUGE reminders to those voters that Trump is a raving lunatic who shouldn’t be anywhere near the White House, let alone be anything more than an insane guy standing on the corner of 5th Avenue in a trench coat who flashes women as they walk by. MarSolo
Oh, I agree for the record that the town hall was a terrible idea, that said, more Trump out in the open is bad for him. Remember all the covid briefings he made himself the front and center of? The first debate with Biden? They all exposed him as someone who wasn’t fit for the job. Now he has all these investigations he’s dealing with, not to mention he’s STILL whining about the 2020 election. People don’t want to hear him whine about the 2020 election, that turns off his most of his base surprisingly enough.

Chairslinger
Annnnd, he's gone. Quote Hours after The Atlantic dropped a lengthy and not-so-positive profile on Chris Licht, Puck News reported that the CNN CEO has told employees he’s no longer tasked with managing the business operations at the company. It was this past Wednesday when Licht claimed that “he would be ceding control of all business operations to David Leavy, the chief corporate affairs officer at Warner Bros. Discovery and a longtime member of the [David] Zaslav braintrust,” the publication noted. According to the report, the decision to move Licht away from the financial matters was an “unequivocal vote of diminishing confidence by the parentco in Licht’s ability to manage a business.” Notably, since Licht has taken over, CNN has suffered to pull in big cable ratings. 2

Air_Delivery
CNN used to have the niche of serious news network (like in the 90s). It might not be the ratings bonanza of Fox News but it had an audience. The problem is CNN basically shit on its last remaining audience to try to pander to another audience that hates them. No amount of groveling to Trump is gonna pull in the MAGA shitheads. And yeah Wolf Blitzer might be as exciting as soggy white bread, but he is perfectly sutable to be on in the background while doing something else. Which is what CNN is now, something to have on in the background. Their brand is in the toliet because they stand for nothing. Say what you will about Fox News, MSNBC or Newsmax, at least they have an identity. IMO CNN needs to refocus on being a real serious news network and mix in real documentaries and infotainment docuseries like Anthony Bourdain and that show with Eva Longoria to differentiate themselves from the other networks. Because they aren't gonna win in the talking head space. 1
