Evil Dead Rise

Recommended Posts

Reminds me of the Freddy and Jason sequels at this point where it could be really any random body-count flick with a few series tropes thrown on to tie the room together. Here we have the ultra-slick version of the originals' inventive and signature camera work and the Necronomicon I guess. I didn't expect anything from this whatsoever and that's what I got from the trailer. At least it doesn't look as dreadful as that recent Texas sequel.

For whatever it’s worth, the Evil Dead remake a few years back also looked like terrible generic trash but it turned out to be shockingly good.  Not amazing or anything and it will never have the cult impact of the original, but for a totally unnecessary remake it was very enjoyable.  I’m kind of hoping for the same out of this.  The remake was extremely gross though, so I’m probably waiting for this to come home too.

Yeah I mean I'm also aware I'm not the audience here so I always feel like Old Man Yelling At Cloud with movies like this. Back in the day we had a similar system to the Video Nasties thing in Germany and we'd scour our version of Fangoria to find the classified lists offering dubbed tapes of banned movies like Evil Dead. They'd spell them backwards, no joke. You'd send the equivalent of about $8 and get a long-play VHS tape with two movies on it and a bunch of trailers if they fit. Seeing Evil Dead for the first time on a mega-shitty VHS copy at 12 or something felt like you were literally watching Satan about to come out of the TV. You never saw all the visible blood tubes, superimposed fullmoon image and all that.

Unrelated really to this movie or my post but a fun anecdote that just popped in my head. I think on the tape with Evil Dead I also got Maniac.

The Evil Dead movies are some of my

favorites and no joke, I genuinely feel like they look better the shittier they are.  I have the 4K versions of them and boy, they were never made to be viewed that way.  You can see everything and it’s very obvious they just hung some spotlights on top of the roof.  I still love them and enjoy watching them this way, but I do wish there was a non-shitty version of a CRT filter or something that would make it look grimy.

Being a massive fan of both the original 3 films and also Fede's 2013 re-imagining was stellar work, so this is a pleasure to see as it had initially been planned as a streaming series which now will be a theatrical experience! Here's to 2023 continuing the trend of horror killing it in the box office!

Between this, Scream 6, Maxxxine, a few others that *SHOULD* arrive by the end of the year, it'll be another solid year no doubt about it!

I admit that I've actively avoided rewatching Evil Dead on 4K for this reason. The 4K remaster Blu Ray of Suspiria kind of did a number on me and turned me off big time. I haven't bought any old school Horror flicks besides things I already know will look spectacular, like John Carpenter's work, as 4K editions since.

The cheese grater part was a little disturbing.

Granted, yes abso-fucking-lutely! Yet, would you say that is more disturbing than the electric knife arm cutting scene or really a lot of other moments from Fede's remake? Evil Dead has always had body horror elements within the possessions, that said I'm cringing right now as I type this thinking of the sound design and what flesh would look like being grated in such fashion.

I think the thing that makes the cheese grater so wince inducing is the more, I guess, likelihood of that somehow happening to me. Axe to the head, chainsaw to the gut, machete to the throat I can watch no problem, seen it all a hundred times in horror movies, but strangely the more over the top and traumatic the injury, the less disturbing it is in a way, whereas I know what a cheese grater feels like, so I can imagine someone pressing it against my leg, and rubbing it hard, and I do not like the thought! It's the smaller stuff like that that is always more gross and unsettling.

This is like when in the Texas Chainsaw remake from the early 2000s the dude's (?) fingernails get ripped off graphically trying to cling to a wall. THAT made me wince, physically get up and hiss. Prior to that, we saw a leg amputated via chainsaw and all kinds of utterly grisly shit yet that's what did it. I assume it's exactly that we can't relate to something that over the top but a nail ripping? Fuck yeah and it's awful.

Reminds me of when I watched The Human Centipede and the only thing that made me wince is the guy tearing the IV out of his arm near the beginning. :p

Also have you seen Syriana? There's a nice nail ripping torture scene in there you might enjoy.

Have not seen Syriana. But man, the nail scenes REALLY fuck me up and I feel like I've seen some of the grossest movies out there.

This reminds me of Ebert & Roeper reviewing one of the Jackass movies. Saying the physical harm is hard to watch but you enjoyed it, but when they went to the paper cuts between the toes. No one wanted to watch that, most people knew that feeling of a  paper cut all too well, and couldn’t imagine doing it on purpose.  It’s true and got that same sick like nausea feeling while watching Everything Everywhere All At Once for a brief 20sec scene

Yup I just physically recoiled reading that description of the Jackass scene.

Funny how paper cuts and not an actual shit in a fishbowl as a helmet w/ a hose attached to savor the scent in all its glory, is what sends us off the edge. Really, with Terrifier 2's bedroom scene, regardless of all that Art does to poor Allie, its the salt & bleach at the end that made me wince the most!

Am I in the minority for preferring Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness for their horror-comedy take vs straight horror?

I like them equally. I saw Army first because it was the only one not banned in Germany at the time. But the first one just blew me away. On a rough-ass VHS/CRT, it was pure terror.

Fun fact: I once was in Bruce Campbell's house helping feed his cats. In the mid-2000s a friend of mine moved to Oregon and per chance ended up employeed as Campbell's landscaper. They became really friendly and whenever he'd go out of town, my friend wouls feed his cats. When I came to visit him, it was one of those times. Truly surreal and funny. Ironically he lives near a town called...Ashland.

Did really nobody see this? This movie fucking slaps so hard. It's more in line with the funhouse tone of Evil Dead 2 than anything else, though with a little less Looney Tunes energy. It's equal parts campy, creepy, and fun. I had a blast seeing this with an audience that was laughing and screaming along with me. Don't sleep on this!!

Looks like you gotta import from the UK for any included extras. The article had a link in the bottom mentioning an Audio Commentary track and a short film “ghost train” from directors on the UK release. If you have a UHD Player then import, as all 4K disc are region free. Although the blu-ray appears to be a locked Region B release

I'm actually freaked out by anything horror these days. I used to watch a TON of horror movies growing up with no issues. I have trouble sleeping at the age of 41 because my imagination is wild. I creep myself out enough at night and for me to add to that by watching horror films is a no go. :(
