crispy4000
Finally beat it, several months after release. Need to go back for a few Shrines and caves, but otherwise I feel done with it. Overall it addresses BoTW's biggest faults, but maybe not quite in as decisive of a way as I hoped. Like a lot of the collectables tucked in the game (yay, no amiibo exclusives!), it feels kind of like a mash up of what the series has done before. Just on a larger scale, with more interesting powers to play with than any Zelda before it. The Shrines and dungeons are much better than BoTW's. They don't hit the series' 3d puzzle highs, but are good enough to get to get on Wind Waker's level at least, while surpassing it in creativity. I really have to give them props for finding ways to not let Ascend break everything. It must have been a difficult design challenge all in itself, not even factoring in all the build-able vehicles. Then there's the enviornmental puzzles, there's multitudes more world-challenge based Shrines than BoTW, and Tears is a better game for it. Getting to the dungeons is also a more interesting affair generally. I felt the sky itself is a callback to Wind Waker's islands, and has all the same positives and negatives. People have criticized the other element of the game I won't spoil. I land somewhere in the middle on it. It's not bad per say, but I don't feel inclined to be a completionist with it. The reason it's a 9.5/10 game and not a perfect 10 for me is the balance and redundant cloathing. So many of those previous game callback costumes do the exact same thing, there's no reason to use one over another beyond which set you have most complete. So seeking them out is pointless. On balance, the best part of the game is the opening, where everything is a threat. But at some point the combat challenge completely dies beyond one or two super-monsters. And sadly, that includes the ending of the game, where a single Silver Lynell on the way is a significantly bigger threat than the final boss in any of its forms. That script needs to flip Nintendo, because what you did otherwise is awesome. 9.5/10 2023 Games Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - 8/10 Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - 7.5/10 Xenoblade 3: Future Redeemed - 9/10 The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 9.5/10 2

It’s a fun reimagining of the original, it makes enough changes to not be a rote retread and balances things to be more in line with modern games, but it doesn’t quite come off the same. Years from now when I have a hankering to play RE4, I’ll probably reach for the OG before this one. That said, it’s a hell of a game. Great action, great fun, great atmosphere, literally if it wasn’t being compared to one of the best games ever made I’d say it was perfect. CastlevaniaNut18
Just beat Kirby’s Dreamland 2 on Gameboy. Never played it when I was a kid. This one seemed a bit harder than the first game and Adventure on NES, but maybe it’s because I was playing this on an actual Gameboy Color and it was a bit cramped in my hands. 2023 games: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster - PC Fire Emblem Engage - Switch Resident Evil 4 Remake - PC Resident Evil VIIlage: Shadows of Rose - PC Pentiment - PC The Last of Us Part I + Left Behind - PC Metroid Prime Remastered - Switch The Last of Us Part II - PS4(on PS5) The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Switch Dead Space 2023 - PC Separate Ways: Resident Evil 4 Remake - PC Kirby’s Dreamland 2 - Gameboy
CastlevaniaNut18
Beat Super Mario Land(DX). crispy4000
Marsupilami is the Kirby of DKC clones. Its easy and chill. The controls are so good, perhaps even better than its inspirations. The level design doesn't quite reach those heights, but still is entertaining the whole of its short runtime. There's only 4 worlds, including the last patched in one, which is a notable step up visually from the rest of the game. It's just a great time overall. These type of platformers are rarely relaxing, but at its best, you can hop and dart through it at a speed closer to a good 2d Sonic game, with less memorization. Not shovelware in the slightest. It'd also be a great game for kids. 8/10 2023 Games Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - 8/10 Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - 7.5/10 Xenoblade 3: Future Redeemed - 9/10 The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 9.5/10 Marsupilami Hoobaventure - 8/10

Keyser_Soze
I haven't been keeping up in this thread but popped in to say I beat Jusant A nice game, not that long actually. I beat it yesterday but actually returned to it to get the rest of the achievements. I didn't mind too much because it turns out the game pass / windows version at launch had no DLSSS, so I played it with FSR the first time, right up until the end then saw on steam they added DLSS, so when I went back the second time I played it with DLSS and it looked a lot nicer and ran a lot smoother. I know this has nothing to do with me talking about the quality of the game but I pretty much said all I needed to say in the Jusant thread.

Honestly the only part of the remake that I’d say is worse is they try to redo the twist ending by changing it, and it’s somehow even less plausible than the original twist. That said, the original reveal was equally stupid so it’s just swapping one bad twist for a different one. I haven’t replayed Dead Space as many times as I have RE4, so outside of some really obvious differences it’s harder to tell what was totally changed and what was left more or less intact. It’s a very faithful remake and I would go back to play this one over the original before I would go back and play the remake of RE4 over the original. Hopefully they’ll give Dead Space 2 this treatment as well. That said, playing this made me look up the bigger picture lore on the markers and yeesh.
CastlevaniaNut18
Just beat Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins DX for Gameboy(color). Improved greatly on an already good prior game. Seems like this is a little hidden gem from the past because I really enjoyed it and never heard anything about it, really. 2023 games: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster - PC Fire Emblem Engage - Switch Resident Evil 4 Remake - PC Resident Evil VIIlage: Shadows of Rose - PC Pentiment - PC The Last of Us Part I + Left Behind - PC Metroid Prime Remastered - Switch The Last of Us Part II - PS4(on PS5) The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Switch Dead Space 2023 - PC Separate Ways: Resident Evil 4 Remake - PC Kirby’s Dreamland 2 - Gameboy Super Mario Land(DX) - Gameboy Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins(DX) - Gameboy

Even if I hadn’t just played two of the best over the shoulder action horror games of all time back to back immediately before starting Callisto, I don’t think it would have made much of a difference. Callisto feels like someone took the basic framework of Dead Space and managed to tweak everything in just the wrong way. Oh, you want a clever combat system instead of just bullet sponge enemies? Yeah, we can do that! How does just waggling the joystick left and right endlessly sound? The idea of having melee be a significant part of the combat and having a way to dodge incoming attacks is good and makes sense. The solution being “just hold left then right endlessly until victory” does not. The boss enemies are bullet sponges, so you will spend minutes of time ducking and weaving without any danger at all because you will ALWAYS dodge as long as you alternate between left and right. There are long stretches of the game dedicated to slowly crawling through vents or shimmying through cracks which feel half like they’re to hide loads and half like they’re padding a short game. The world is littered with walls of spikes for you to throw enemies into which would be more satisfying if the tool you used to do it didn’t suck and if it didn’t feel like an apology for the combat. “Look, we know you’re getting tired of dodging, just toss this guy into spikes and we can both move on.” It’s not a terrible game or even a bad one, just a thoroughly mediocre one. It was free through PS+ and for that it was fine but if I had paid $70 for it I’d have been be very unhappy. As a side note, this game was originally going to be in the PUBG universe which is wild, and I don’t know if it’s a bad coincidence or not, but the ending of the game can be sort of loosely connected tied to PUBG still. I don’t know if they kept the original idea but scrapped the direct reference or if it was just a fairly standard trope that echos. 1
CastlevaniaNut18
Another game down, Kirby's Dreamland Deluxe for Switch. I started this earlier this year when it released, but didn't get far before I shlved it for other stuff. Been in a big platforming mood lately, so I picked it back up the other day. As someone who never played the original game on Wii, this was solid, fun Kirby. 8/10. 2023 games: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster - PC Fire Emblem Engage - Switch Resident Evil 4 Remake - PC Resident Evil VIIlage: Shadows of Rose - PC Pentiment - PC The Last of Us Part I + Left Behind - PC Metroid Prime Remastered - Switch The Last of Us Part II - PS4(on PS5) The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Switch Dead Space 2023 - PC Separate Ways: Resident Evil 4 Remake - PC Kirby’s Dreamland 2 - Gameboy Super Mario Land(DX) - Gameboy Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins(DX) - Gameboy Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe - Switch
