CayceG
They made 3 MJ of energy from 2 MJ worth of lasers. That's really cool and neat! But it took 300 MJ to power the lasers

stepee
Nice this was from LLNL, I used to love visiting the discovery center as a kid.
b_m_b_m_b_m
Fusion was the coolest topics we went over in undergrad when I was a physics major. Very exciting to see this keep improving but we will once and always remain 20 years out

Keyser_Soze
Isn't this what @Mr.Vic20 is putting in that building? They might experiment on him and he could BECOME energy!

And if it's coming out of Lawrence Livermore, those tangible uses will probably be weapons-related.

TyphoidHater
The fact that the apparent solution here is shifting from a physics issue to an engineering issue seems promising. Better/more efficient lasers should have many more applications besides the pursuit of fusion energy. 1
brucoe
I just hope that this isn't one of those stories we remember years later as something that was fudged by a scientist for quick fame.

Massdriver
It’s exciting news! I am an optimist and believe it will start being deployed commercially in twenty years. In the meantime, solar, wind, geothermal, and next gen nuclear, both modular and other types of reactors, including some that can process nuclear waste.
