Guest
Florida QB Jalen Kitna jailed on child pornography counts WWW.ESPN.COM Florida's Jalen Kitna, the son of ex-NFL QB Jon Kitna, has been jailed on multiple counts involving child pornography. He has been suspended indefinitely. Will be interesting see the details as there are reports from local news folks on Twitter saying the images and videos were of the QBs 17 year old girlfriend, and the player in question is only 19. Unless he was sending them around to others, I have a hard time seeing this as worthy of prosecution. I’d guess there are literally millions of minor teens who have sent explicit photos to their non-minor teen partner.
Jason
This is far from the first time people have been prosecuted under these laws for situations you wouldn't reasonably think should be covered by these laws. Teenagers have even been prosecuted for distributing child porngraphy for sending naked pictures of themselves to other teenagers their own age. Girl Charged After Sending Explicit Selfie: 'I'm Not A Criminal' WWW.CBSNEWS.COM "Sexting is common among teens at my school, and we shouldn't face charges for doing it," she added. Even if they're of his girlfriend, the article suggests he's posting them on Discord, right?

Quick Googling indicates that Florida has a revenge porn law and that getting convicted under that law doesn't require registering as a sex offender. Seems like revenge porn would be a more sensible charge here if all of the sharing was contained to people their age.
Jason
Also it looks like in Florida if you're over 18 but under 24 it's legal to have sex with people 16 and older. So yeah if the sharing was entirely with people under 24 then it's pretty dumb that you can legally have sex with someone but that looking at a naked picture of the same person legally counts as child porn. This is what I was getting at, if he is sending them around that is different than mere possession. I wouldn’t be shocked if a bunch of dumb jocks had a discord server where they share nudes of their girlfriends and other ladies. I still think even there I would be more likely to push for something like the revenge porn types of charge given the relative ages of the parties involved. Again, will have to see what exactly dude was doing and I certainly reserve the right to throw the book at him depending on the facts of the case
Kal-El814
I don't want to come off puritanical here, since I believe that in general it would be healthier if people appreciated that young people have sexual desires and it's okay to explore them in a safe space and with consenting partners of an appropriate age. And I can appreciate that it's 2022 so naked pictures are going to be part of the thing for a lot of these people. AAAAAAAND I'll acknowledge that regardless of where the lines are drawn that there are going to be people just on the other side of them that get caught in the dragnet. But I can't much muster the energy to care? I don't really know why I feel this way, that kind of stuff normally gets under my skin.

Seeing the impact of (completely legit, the most despicable of content) child porn charges on a person I know who was convicted, as well as the collateral damage to their family…it is slightly concerning to me that we might apply such harsh penalties to people who were doing something I view as substantively different. Not that there shouldn’t be *some* sort of penalty for the alleged conduct in this case, but it feels a little imprecise to charge this guy with the same crime as my former employee who had (CP description content warning) Spoiler videos of infants being raped on his computer. Reputator
Yeah some prosecutor decided whatever he did was bad enough to ruin his future over. I doubt it was just having the pictures on his phone and keeping them to himself.

Jason
One of the most believable things in the world is a prosecutor going completely overboard with the charges in this kind of case because they think it's good for their career. 1
silentbob
I had 2 guys I use to work with at the movie theatre that hosted their own server or something. One (or a couple) of their users was peddling child porn on it and didn’t know, but we’re arrested in a sting operation I think 10 years back by the O.P.P. I know one wasn’t charged but not 100% on the other guy, but believe he was also let go without any charges. Just had a huge child porn operation “Maverick” wrap up in Ontario with 107 arrests and 23 in Toronto area. I wonder sadly if it’s somehow related

Signifyin(g)Monkey
If Florida were ranked #1 and in the title conversation I’m sure there’d be a fairly well-run coverup underway. His true crime, in the mind of Florida boosters, is being a mediocre qb.
Commissar SFLUFAN
Some of the details of the case have been released and they're a HELLUVA LOT WORSE than originally thought. The phrase "so young junior" was written on that picture, and another of a pubescent girl. Kitna told a detective he thought the pictures were legal because he found them online. When police searched Kitna's phone, they found three more images of two nude pubescent girls in the shower, according to the report. Those three images were saved to his cellphone last December, police said. The report did not estimate the ages of the girls.

Commissar SFLUFAN
@Jason - I put the quotes from the article as a spoiler simply because I don't think it's a good idea to have those details to be easily readable in the open.
