Anime News Network has caught the first two episodes and they really liked it. It's a full series done in the style of the previously released Rick and Morty anime Youtube shorts. I'll definitely be checking it out. I've also linked Adult Swim's newest "trailer" for the series. Rick and Morty: The Anime Explores New Dimensions WWW.ANIMENEWSNETWORK.COM If you're a diehard Rick and Morty fan, think of this as a dedicated season of Interdimensional Cable. I watched about 1/3rd of the first episode for the anime and thought it was kinda garbage

I like the garish, unique art style and the first episode is clearly setting up an anime-style overarching plot for the season with more direct anime tropes being employed while still doing homages to things like Citizen Kane. The first episode got more confusing as it went on though overall it was reminiscent of the early episode where Morty lives a whole life in VR, except here, it appears he lived multiple different kinds of lives. Most bizarrely, the show is not trying to be a comedy at all - there are no real jokes to speak of in this episode. Pilot episodes for these kinds of things are always a little weird, I think we'll know more after episode two on whether this is good at all or not. Spork3245
I think the issue is that this is trying to make the IP something it absolutely isn’t. “Hey, let’s take Rick & Morty and turn it into an anime! But, not in any way a spoof or action-spoof style anime! Let’s strip all the humor out of it, you know, 99% of the main show, and have serious yet incoherent plots instead!”. It’s fine to try new things, but it would be like taking Lord of the Rings and turning it into Loony Toons, or making a Deadpool cartoon that’s a drama. I get that it can’t just mimic the main show as then “what’s the point”, but it also shouldn’t take away the main appeal to achieve that. I think I have to see more first before I say the difference in genre between the two shows is that stark a contrast but it definitely seems an odd approach. If I hear it gets better, I'll try watching more, but both my wife and I gave up after a little past 1/3rd of the first episode. We both love the main show and, while I like anime more than her, Dragon Ball became more-or-less her all-time favorite show after I introduced her to it.

I'll keep you posted if it gets any better, it was definitely a weak start.
