Digital Extremes proudly revealed an all-new IP, Soulframe, during #TennoCon 2022. This free-to-play open world adventure heavily influenced by themes of nature, restoration, and exploration.

A totally new game in early development, Soulframe will deliver its own independent and uniquely immersive experience led by the creative and imaginative minds behind Warframe. For early fans of Digital Extremes, the path to release will be a familiar one: it will be a transparent, collaborative and iterative process that is shaped by the passion of players and DE.

I'm sure you'll start it just as soon as you're finished playing Warframe.

Believe it or not, I actually stopped playing Warframe about 9 months ago! I final just didn’t feel like playing it any more. That was a long time coming!

I put like 1500 hours into warframe but I have pretty much zero interest in ever playing a "free to play" game again.

Warframe is loaded with bugs, they rush out content and let the community beta test it. You can spend real money buying stuff or hours grinding things that they'll nerf into oblivion because it was "bugged" or simply too popular.

Warframe was never egregious in terms of monetization but the core of how things are structured incentivizes spend money to save time which actively makes the game less fun than it could/should be.

Looks cool. I dabbled in Warframe but found it overwhelming. I can see myself getting into something like this if I can get in at the beginning.

I got into warframe  a bit late but I doubt things were less overwhelming at the beginning because they just do a really piss poor job of explaining anything/everything and even the stuff that seems pretty straightforward doesn't work how you think it does often times.

There's an area where you can test things called the simulacrum and it is an absolute necessity because how things work in theory is rarely how they work in reality.

During the Warframe-themed festivities of TennoCon 2023, we spoke to Digital Extremes about Soulframe, the developer’s upcoming Elden Ring-style MMORPG.

Combat features a lot of dodging and parrying, and while the ‘purified’ world looks more akin to something out of Fable, the warped, twisted iteration of Midrath that we’ll likely spend most of our time in certainly channels the moodiness of Elden Ring’s Lands Between.

When I ask if Soulframe is directly inspired by the game, Sinclair tells me “it’s impossible to avoid it. When we were naming the game, we have this premise of the souls of our ancestors, and then we put f**king ‘souls’ in the name.”

“When Elden Ring came out, we were just starting on Soulframe and obviously we, like every developer in the world, looked at each other and went ‘oh shit.’ [Elden Ring] was just so incredible in terms of how the exploration felt and, for me, the non-linearity made it that, when you hit a wall, you just go to a different place – which was refreshing. So yeah, we are taking a lot of inspiration from it.”

However, it’s not the only game that has inspired the Soulframe saga. “There are a lot of other influences there; great melee combat games like Ghost of Tsushima are huge ones as well. You’ll probably notice that the camera is a bit more like Ghost, and less like Elden Ring.”

It's funny because the were two games that came to mind when I watched the gameplay videos.

Digital Extremes has ridden a wave of success with Warframe for more than a decade – but now it's creating something new: Soulframe. To learn more about the upcoming MMO, we spoke to members of the team to learn about potential Warframe crossover content, how Digital Extremes plans to maintain its community-driven approach to game development, and so much more.

Soulframe, an over-the-shoulder fantasy MMO, is the latest game from Warframe developer Digital Extremes. With slick action, otherworldly customization options, and thick lore, Soulframe is undeniably a Warframe sister project, but it's also something completely different. Where the 2013 sci-fi game leans into industrial settings and breakneck action, Soulframe takes a more methodical approach with an emphasis on nature, ancestry, and slower combat.

IGN attended a press presentation ahead of TennoCon and the inaugural Soulframe dev stream to get a better look at the studio’s plans. During an open Q&A session, the team explained that Soulframe’s starting island is about twice as big as Warframe’s first open-world area, The Plains of Eidolon. The studio also promised that Soulframe will feature a Mastery Rank system not unlike Warframe’s, adding that it shares some similarities with the Operator Focus School system. While TennoCon 2024 offered a peak behind the Soulframe curtain, we had to know more.

We caught up with Digital Extremes CEO Steve Sinclair, Creative Director Geoff Crookes, and Community Manager Sarah Asselin to learn more about how Soulframe will evolve over the coming years. Our chat revealed more information about potential Warframe crossover content, how Digital Extremes plans to maintain its community-driven approach to game development, and so much more. There's a lot of work to do, but the team is ready to prove that it's making something a lot more than just Warframe with a palette swap.

Interview | We learn about the naming process and broader philosophy behind Digital Extremes' latest game

Soulframe, the new free-to-play multiplayer fantasy RPG in development at Digital Extremes, almost certainly sets a certain kind of expectation from folks that play video games and especially fantasy video games. The shadow of FromSoftware's titles looms large, after all, and Soulframe creative director Geoff Crookes knows it. So I had to know: why would you have "soul" in there at all?

"'Cause we're fools," he says and then laughs. "We agonized over it, you're right."

According to Crookes, the team had written down a whole bunch of different names, but the themes that they wanted in Soulframe – "fixing the soul of the world, finding your ancestors through collecting their souls in the game, interacting with other players and connecting to them and having remnants of their souls in your world" – were always front of mind and important to what Digital Extremes was building.

So, instead of ditching the name because of the obvious comparisons, the team instead decided to commit and "double down on what the game's identity is" right from the start in order to be clear "this game is not a grimdark game."

"We do not want to compete with people that are making some of the best games ever made and what they do," says Crookes. "I think what it's done is it's really made us step up our game and make a really good first impression, when you kind of see the game and the potential for optimism that's kind of there, the romanticism that we want to lead into with what's presented in the game."

This is what Steve Sinclair (former lead designer on Warframe) has been working on. Interested to see if it’s my cup of tea. He has suggested that Soulframe will fix many of his personal regrets with Warframe. Basically, Warframe grew in a “what should we tack on next?!” Manner and he is looking to start fresh with a deep and matured, but cleaner world.

Hopefully this comes out in two or more years. I fear for your free time. :p

In two more years I’ll be shifting gears and working less than I am now, so bring it on!
