Keyser_Soze
Well @Mr.Vic20 Roge certainly got his fill of sights on the way home. I found him at night so I fought everything from trolls to zombie. I hope he's not too traumatized. After that was over I decided to go back to the capital but then got sidetracked as one does. A griffin attacked me but I kicked his ass enough to fly off. Then I found myself at the ancient battleground where I saw a dragon battling a cyclops. Some guy said he wanted me to escort him to the cenotaph, I accepted but then was a bit nervous when he wanted to go in the direction of where I saw the dragon Now I'm in some big cave filled with ghosts! 1

AbsolutSurgen
8 hours ago, Xbob42 said: Max 30 cap will be huge for consoles, provided it's a good framerate limiter and doesn't allow frametimes to go wild. The entire reason it's so herky-jerky all the time is that the frametimes are all over the place, which gives a really constant "start-stop-start-stop" feeling to the entire game when in towns, and less so the further away from towns you are. Weird to say for one of the objectively worse performing games I've played in years, but it actually runs really well when away from towns. Just these beautiful locales, dense, foggy forests with gorgeous lighting, multiple enemies fighting and tons of spell effects and it doesn't miss a beat. But it's like an inverse square law, where the performance cost decreases exponentially when far away from NPCs, and of course increases exponentially as you draw closer. I really hope they pin down and minimize the issue(s), I assume they're simply keeping track of far more information than is relevant to the player that could probably be simplified. To expand upon my earlier baseless conjecture: performance like this makes me think they're doing shit like cloth physics and animation calculations (like inverse kinematics) when characters not only aren't on-screen, but not even within a radius where that would be even potentially useful, like when you turn the camera to look at a city from a mile away. When in reality they could probably just track "x,y,z position, daily schedule" and whatever other absolute minimum tracking needs to be done. The CPU usage is insane right now. As you can see, while the average FPS is fine, the 1% and 0.1% lows are absurdly low. When your FPS is fluctuating between 86 and 30 (and everywhere inbetween) every frame, it's gonna feel bad. But it also goes much, much lower. A 7800X3D is enough CPU horsepower to bend the Series X and PS5 over and rearrange their guts, but still gets roughly the same lows as those versions. (As you can see, despite the wide range of CPUs, the variance is not as wide as you'd expect. And this is at a low resolution on a 4090, so no GPU getting in the way.) They've got their work cut out for them, and man I hope they do it. The frame pacing has to be terrible for those 1% lows. There has to be something fundamentally broken with their code for that to happen.
Best
I played 5 hours today. Level 19 now. Some of these quests are difficult because they give you very little detail. Something about getting a Bestren mask and they will let you through. It's not like most modern RPG"s you have to read stuff and pay attention to what the game is telling you in order to progress. Keyser_Soze
I got through that one cave, fought my first golem and then found the Sphinx. I put down a waypoint so I could come back to her. Then I did mostly quests around the town and got that free house. I'm going back to the checkpoint town for that Jadite Orb quest now. Oh yeah and fighting that golem, I climbed up to the head and it does like an explosion thing that sent me flying off but my pawn was underneath and caught me. Nice! Such a dumb, misleading video. Movies are typically filmed at 24fps, but nobody would argue we should go back to N64 frame rates. Also you're not controlling it, nor does have poor frame pacing that resembles hitching and stutters. If a movie was stuttering unintentionally people would complain. Also if a game isnt a steady 30fps, which DD2 isnt even relatively small dips in frame. Dropping 6fps from 30 feels much more noticeable than dropping 6fps from 90, because at 30fps that’s a sudden loss of 20%. But in general 30 fps just isnt as smooth. I haven’t played with it, but I also wonder if consoles and lower end PCs being stuck with Interlaced rendering just to get to 30fps. That’s some real 6th gen console stuff right there when some had to settle for 1080i as the highest console resolution with 720p better for fast motion. Kind of seems like cheating when they are also using checkerboarding.
