Kal-El814
As always, anti-abortion chodes stoke the public’s ire with imaged scenarios in which women wait until the last possible moment to terminate a pregnancy, as if women are aiming their birth canals into a garbage chute because they woke up after 9 months of pregnancy and decided to get an abortion on a whim. Why is it always the worst possible scenario for all of these smooth brains? Should a woman be able to have an abortion when she’s crowning? Why can’t I own a bazooka, antifa might have a tank? If I can’t call someone the n-word in the public square without fear of being coldcocked, do we really have freedom of speech?
Dodger
That’s not any different than all this what about rape/incest/ectopic pregnancies talk which are like 1% of all abortions. Which is sadly all these “debates” come down to. What about the minuscule number of abortions due to danger to the life of the mother versus how dare you support murdering a baby two seconds away from popping out of the vagina which happens like twice a year or something. Because Christians (especially evangelicals and those associated with them) love to think in absolutes. If something isn't with God, then it must be evil, and people will be doing the most evil things.

It is objectively different. Rapes happen, pregnancies from rapes happen, even if they are not common. Women actively giving birth do not decide to have abortions. This doesn’t happen. Ob/gyns don’t come into a birthing room expecting to deliver a baby but also equipped to terminate the pregnancy in case the person having the baby changes their mind. It’s a bullshit talking point designed to paint people seeking reproductive care as flakey and incapable of making their own decisions.
Guest
Dodger is correct that the discussion almost always devolves to edge cases, which is a diversion. For example, were an anti-abortion activist to grant that rape/incest/ectopic pregnancies/etc. are protected reasons for abortion, the pro-abortion activist is not going to go along with limits on the vast majority of other abortions because the edge cases are not why they support the right to an abortion. Chollowa
The one thing I learned from my personal experience with choosing to terminate a very much wanted pregnancy for medical reasons, it is so much more common than you could imagine. Getting news at your 20 week anatomy scan that the child you very much want to have and have been fighting to have for years, either isn't viable, or is likely to lead a severely difficult life, starts this insane countdown clock in which you have to make a decision before you get to 23 weeks and it becomes much more difficult to get an abortion; even in a "uber liberal" state like California. So you're running around from specialist to specialist, pulling strings and calling in favors to get bumped to the front of the list for specialists and even then you feel like you're making the decision with a gun to your head. And once you do it, I cannot tell you how many people will send you a private message or pull you aside and tell you something like that happened to them. It's purely anecdotal but for those limited times that it happens, people in difficult positions deserve to not be treated like monsters and should be free to make those completely unwanted, absolutely soul-crushing decisions. 13 1
