Commissar SFLUFAN
Tom Hanks Sets ‘Greyhound’ and ‘Band of Brothers’ Sequels at Apple TV+ WWW.MILITARY.COM WWII drama "Masters of the Air" has wrapped filming and should be coming soon. Quote "Masters of the Air" has wrapped filming and has a rumored $250 million budget. Cary Fukunaga, director of the recent James Bond movie "No Time to Die," directed at least the pilot episode of the series, which stars Austin Butler, who will be seen this summer starring as Army veteran Elvis Presley in director Baz Luhrmann's movie "Elvis." "Masters of the Air" is described as a sequel to the classic HBO WWII infantry series "Band of Brothers," also produced by Hanks and Goetzman, along with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment. Their subsequent HBO series "The Pacific" featured none of the same characters based on real military members but, because it was also a WWII period drama, HBO called it a sequel. Amblin is also a production partner on "Masters of the Air." The book on which the miniseries is based: Masters of the Air | Book by Donald L. Greatoneshere
Greyhound was pretty good. How is this a sequel? I don't remember the film, but I remember it was pretty enjoyable.

It's not a "sequel" to Greyhound and they're completely misusing the word "sequel" in describing it as one to "Band of Brothers" or "The Pacific".

Ah, then yes, that makes more sense - I'll probably watch, dig the era.

They’re getting mentioned side by side because they are both Hanks-WWII-Apple projects, which is also why it’s confusing.
thewhyteboar
I need to watch Greyhound. It’s based on a C.S. Forester book right?
silentbob
Can’t wait for the series, but I gotta admit I still haven’t finished The Pacific. Gonna sound even more amazing when I finally get my receiver and mix that sound to some height speakers
Remarkableriots
A $300M TV series everyone forgot existed might premiere in weeks WEGOTTHISCOVERED.COM Talk about rising like a phoenix. Quote The strike definitely doesn’t help, anyway, but what’s even more bizarre is that IMDb recently updated Masters of the Air‘s release date to September 20, which is only a matter of weeks away.

Jwheel86
I always thought this a hard story to tell since 8th Air Force's job was to level German cities.

I'm fairly certain that little bit of "war crime-ing" will be either glossed over or dispensed with in one scene of somber moral self-reflection or something
SoberChef
Just hope it's better than The Pacific.

Sure, it's not as cohesive as a narrative, but I love it nonetheless.

Commissar SFLUFAN
Everything about this miniseries looks "fine", but that's about as far as I can go with praise or my overall interest. I genuinely believe that the era of World War II-related media capturing any real interest or attention ended well over a decade ago.

rc0101
Watched the first episode and thought it was ok. I wish they showed more of the training like Band of Brothers did to get to know the characters. Don’t see it living up to Band of Brothers but I’ll keep watching for sure. I had an old neighbor who piloted B-17s in WW2 and it made me wish I got to talk to him more when I had the chance.

I had an old neighbor who piloted B-17s in WW2 and it made me wish I got to talk to him more when I had the chance. I watched the first two episodes and thought that it was perfectly fine/competent. So far, I haven't seen anything that would elevate it to the lofty, probably unattainable heights of Band of Brothers, but that's not definitely not something to be held against the show. I'm also in agreement that an episode focused on pre-deployment training would certainly have been beneficial in establishing the characters and their personalities which are kinda "non-existent" at this point. The B-17 Flying Fortress will forever remain one of the most beautiful aircraft to ever grace the skies! On a more personal note, I'm not sure that my father who flew for the RAF during WWII would've been entirely appreciative of the depiction of the service

Commissar SFLUFAN
Tonight's episode really kinda proved the point the RAF made that daylight bombing was nothing short of absolutely suicidal, especially without any form of long-range fighter escort. The Fw-190 was a pretty decent heavy bomber interceptor though they weren't nearly as maneuverable at higher altitudes as the show depicts. TwinIon
Stopped by the March Field Air Museum recently, which I highly recommend to anyone traveling along the 215. They have a huge collection of aircraft, including a B-17. Very cool to see these planes up close. I'm enjoying the show well enough, but I also really think they messed up by not doing a Band of Brothers training episode or two. I feel like it would really have helped establish the characters and would have gone a long way into reminding us that flying in general wasn't a huge thing when the war started. Many of these kids wouldn't likely have ever been in an airplane prior to joining up. Heck, the US Air Force didn't even exist yet and at the time of the first episode, the US Army Air Forces was only a couple years removed from being the Army Air Corps. I don't know if those organizational structures should actually have been part of the story, but to me it's a good reminder of how novel this style of air combat was. They're doing a good job of reminding us of contrasting the US and British approaches to bombing, but I kind of wish they put that in a broader perspective. It is a great looking show though. That Apple money might not have been well spent, but it's right there on the screen. 1

Commissar SFLUFAN
Tonight's episode was the series finale and overall, while the highs definitely outweighed the lows, it never came within striking distance of the benchmark set by Band of Brothers (and I doubt anything ever will) nor would I even consider it to be on par with The Pacific either. I watched Masters of the Air. I generally enjoyed Masters of the Air. I won't remember a bloody damned thing about Masters of the Air. 1
SuperSpreader
Maybe one day these racists will make a movie about the Latino or Black divisions of WW2 and not make it about just white men winning it.
