Massdriver
I wish he gave more to charities. It’s perplexing. It’s in his interest to throw a billion here and there to the global poor. It’s his largest moral failing and he has plenty of them. Still, I like Tesla and SpaceX. I think Musk has some attributes to be admired. But he’s got a messiah complex that ruined what could have been. I hope he gets better with time. As for him purchasing Twitter, I don’t think it’s the end of America. We were already done! ps: Weird silly fight

Or do you mean in the replies? Because I said, don’t go look for the replies because you will definitely get the toxicity in the replies to *every* topic. I don't go looking through the replies, I know better than that. It's creators posting receipts of people targeting them / creating fake accounts impersonating them and doing stupid shit with them, etc. I don't blame them. The space is weirdly gatekept by a particularly vocal kind of chode, which in of itself isn't especially unique. But it's also not super big; purging the bad actors is frequently possible. So it's often worth the time and energy for the creators to call out the behavior. It's not like I'm following the members of BTS or something. I suspect this is somewhat topic related. I follow a bunch of tabletop game creators, several of them are queer and / or trans and they get a ton of shit for simply existing. No, I don't. I follow very specific people, and the idea that Warhammer is filled with hateful people is an terrible overstatement. Grimdank and the like is not indicative of the Warhammer community at large

CastlevaniaNut18
I don’t use Twitter much, just to follow a few news people, politicians, and authors. I never actually interact there. So I don’t see how much would change for me.
Dodger
Wasn’t using Twitter before, won’t be using it after. Anything I’m interested in gets posted on a forum anyway. Including a bunch of shit I don’t want to see. Hopefully whichever of you gets the desire to post Ben Shapiro tweets already deleted your account in a fit of rage. 1
Guest
One nice thing about Twitter as a private firm is no longer needing to care about user and engagement growth, which is pretty much the entire reason that bots and the negativity algorithm exist. The important metrics of a privately held Twitter are different than a public one.

b_m_b_m_b_m
Now this is interesting Other interesting tidbits on hire he’s not actually a free speech guy, but what happens when Tesla is threatened because of tweets or stories going viral? Does anyone think he won’t get involved directly like he apparently does at his other companies? The ever-odious Peter Navarro outright stated that he doesn't trust Musk at all when it comes to his business interests with Beijing. And speaking of odious people... Jeff Bezos is already testing Elon Musk’s commitment to free speech by trolling WWW.THEVERGE.COM He’s just asking a few questions Quote Just before Twitter announced it’s accepting Elon Musk’s $44 buyout bid, the world’s richest man tweeted, “I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means.” His commitment is getting a mild test thanks to a fellow tech billionaire / rocket enthusiast / media mogul. Jeff Bezos quoted a New York Times reporter’s tweet pointing out that Tesla’s business interests in China could give the government leverage over Twitter via its new owner, saying, “Interesting question. Did the Chinese government just gain a bit of leverage over the town square?.”

stepee
I’m not too concerned that elon owning twitter will suppress free speech on twitter since twitter has nothing to do with free speech. Definitely concerned it will be used as a brainwashing mechanism ala fox news but I think it already captures the people who are susceptible via algorithm anyway.

I agree that the fringe is amplified beyond its reality via social media, but I think we also have to be a little careful of dismissing occurrences as just the fringe. In 2014, people supporting Trump would have been labeled a fringe group, yet he went on to win the republican nomination and presidency. And while he got voted out of his second term, it was more than close enough that he could still potentially win it in the next term. The fringe on social media can turn into the typical.

Jwheel86
Quote Musk just now: By “free speech”, I simply mean that which matches the law. I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law. If people want less free speech, they will ask government to pass laws to that effect. Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people. Who's law? TwinIon
He has clarified before (I think) that he'll comply with all laws in a given country. So he knows that the EU and the US and India will have different restrictions on speech and they will comply with all of them. What I'd love to see someone grill him on more is his feeling on content rules at all. The first amendment allows all sorts of things. Basically everything not allowed on Twitter right now is allowed by the First Amendment. How about porn? Harassment? Deliberate misinformation? Impersonation? Terrorism? Suicide promotion? Gore? Is blocking someone infringing on their rights? What about muting them? Will they ban anyone? How about children, will they be allowed on Twitter now? The only thing he's really specified so far is that he wants to ban bots, which is the exact opposite of free speech! My guess is that most of Twitter's policies will remain in place. Guest
Elon and others have floated a second tier of verification where your identity would be matched to a credit card. Not a perfect system, but would make it more difficult to create fake accounts for harassment campaigns if there was an option for verified account interactions only.
