CastlevaniaNut18
I haven’t watched TLOTR movies in years. I’ve got the EEs on Blu-ray, need to sit down and watch them sometime. Haven’t seen the Hobbit movies. Shockingly never read any of the books, either.

I tried it back in high school and I struggled. One of the few examples where I couldn’t get through the book but enjoyed the movie. I’ve heard The Hobbit is an easier read, so I might try that sometime.
Commissar SFLUFAN
Amazon's 'The Lord of the Rings' to Cost $465M for Just One Season WWW.HOLLYWOODREPORTER.COM The highly anticipated fantasy series will cost far more than previous record-breaking estimates: "This will be the largest television series ever made."
Ghost_MH
Has Amazon ever directly produced anything, TV or feature length, coming anywhere close to a budget this large?
Fizzzzle
Not as far as I can tell. The first two seasons of The Man in the High Castle only cost $179 million. That and The Boys are (I think) the most expensive productions they've made, and they both are in the $10-$12 million per episode mark. We don't know how many episodes the LOTR series will be, but assuming it's 10 per season, that's... substantial.

Guest
A significant part of the cost will be the upfront build out of the series, from VFX to sets to costuming. Future seasons will be more in the 250 million range

Yeah and it ended up looking like boogers. Same with king goblin. Azog actually looked alright imo. It's just when EVERY orc is CG, they end up looking fake and silly. I want to say the one orc in the whole trilogy that is at least partially practical is the one gollum kills before meeting bilbo. I could be wrong about that. TwinIon
As @GeneticBlueprint pointed out,~$250M is for the rights, so immediately we're down from the astronomic to the merely excessive. That leaves them at ~$215M. As @sblfilms mentioned, a good chunk of this is building up physical and virtual assets for VFX (think building Hobbiton and the cosutmes for the films), not to mention all the design work that goes into that. Now I also imagine that they spent at least some time in the writing room mapping out seasons 1-5, even if they're far from finished. I wouldn't be shocked if all that up front work came out to something like ~$100M. That would put the actual filming cost back towards the same $100M+ range as other very expensive shows like Game of Thrones, just with the massive up front costs associated with getting a multi-season production going and securing the rights to one of the best known properties on earth. Also, it seems that they might get as much as $100M back in tax breaks from the Kiwis, which really softens the blow. Additionally, the rights they paid are pretty far reaching, and while their planned LOTR MMO was canned, you can bet that this TV show won't be the end of their LOTR content. Kal-El814
The Hobbit trilogy was so...not what I want from LoTR content that I’m not the least interested in this until it’s out and we have some impressions.
