Dre801
Um. . . .ok. I'll admit I've spent many hours binging SVU reruns on a lazy Saturday with the GF.
silentbob
I’ll take it and beside NCIS is doing it too. Although this reminds me of 30 Rock when they are talking about diversity on NBC and that they have that black guy on Law & Order. Only to be told NBC canceled it and asking, Why? I wonder who we will get for the roles

SVU can be a bit more connected, but it's still pretty easy to watch casually.

I watched the SVU crossover and the first couple episodes of season 1. I like him. I enjoyed it, seemed like more of an action-oriented Law and Order. TheLeon
At this point on the TV landscape, Law & Order Classic seems almost quaint. There’s no real hook, no special genius detective or elite specialist squad, just detectives and lawyers doing going through their routines. I'm fairly certain that's the "pitch" that got NBC to greenlight it. It's a "back-to-basics" approach that contrasts with just about everything else currently in that genre. I need to watch the season premiere of this and SVU. Currently about halfway through the original L&O, I'd never watched it before.
Guest
The original Law and Order series is great as almost every episode tells a complete story that doesn’t require you to have seen anything else in the series to enjoy, so it works well in the old framework of cable TV where you just watch whatever episode happens to be on that day. A lot of the stories and acting hold up pretty well even today, which is not the case for many shows that came out during the same time. This is the best part of the original series and the worst part of the spinoffs. Once they started delving too deeply into the personal lives of the detectives it lost me as being timeless, watch whenever, wherever TV. I think we unfortunately have moved so far towards serialized TV that we’ve left very little room for shows that make the setting and scenario the character we stick with from week to week. That means we need to have story lines where Liv struggles with work-life balance and what her identity is. Sorry Liv, your identity is great detective who solves crimes and cares for victims! But definitely compare a random SVU episode from the first few seasons to something from maybe 5-6 years ago and I think most would agree the older episode holds up better! We see this all the time, people go nuts when they see an episode of The Mandalorian or even What If where “nothing happens.”

I honestly didn't bother remembering the names of any of the characters other than Lennie Briscoe. For me the characters were: - Lennie Briscoe's partner - The Police Captain - The DA Played Sam Waterston - That DA's Boss - The Lady ADA with Dark Hair - The Lady ADA with Blonde Hair - The Other Lady ADA with Blonde Hair

The worst episodes of SVU are easily the ones that spent their 44 minutes on Liv's brother or Stabler's failing marriage. The world is so terribly small when Stabler's daughter just happens to be involved in some crime his very specific line of work involves him with. I don't want to have to keep up with Law and Order. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for some interesting crime to see solved. The original series was Saturday morning monster of the week for adults that enjoy dreary financial crimes or a good whodunit.
