Brick
Seriously why bother putting the Tom Clancy title on this? They easily could have just named it XDefiant and it'd be fine; is anyone seriously going, "Oh it's a Tom Clancy game, so I'll definitely buy it"? The Tom Clancy title used to mean a realistic, tactical military or police themed game. Oh how far that's fallen.
TheLeon
Well, Tom Clancy’s name on a book also used to mean it was written by Tom Clancy, but that hasn’t been true for a long time.

I guarantee you it's because it's Rainbow Six, and not because it's "Tom Clancy's _______". Perhaps early on in the days people went, "Tom Clancy? He wrote a video game?", and bought based on thinking it'd be a good military thriller like his books or something, but now? Nobody cares. I'm talking about Ubi trying to do a brand extension between two games -- and you're bringing it back to the author. I doubt most of the GenZ players even care who Tom Clancy is - or know that there were Rainbow Six games before Siege. Ubi is hoping that some Siege players (or former Siege players) see the Tom Clancy name and say "hey that's the guy who made the game I fucking loved". That's all the more reason to go back to its roots. There has been enough time for an OG Rainbow Six to feel fresh again. Or a Ghost Recon. Or a Splinter Cell. Hell even if they wanted to be lazy and remake the original Splinter Cell, I doubt anyone would have a problem with it. I'd rather play a SC remake than see Sam Fisher shoehorned into yet another franchise. Also, when even the IGN guys are ripping you a new one, you know you done fucked up. AbsolutSurgen
They stopped making those games because they didn't sell well enough to justify their production costs. I'm not defending this game -- and I personally have no interest in playing it. I'm not the target market -- my kids might soon be. I was just explaining the basic concept of a brand extension. You mean their production costs ballooned to a point where they were no longer sustainable. The OG Clancy brand sold really well for its time. It was one of, if not Ubisoft's biggest franchises. I'd be willing to bet, if they licensed out the Splinter Cell brand and let a small, passionate (and talented) team make it, they could turn a profit quite easily. There are plenty of smaller devs out there doing much more with much less. Look at what IO Interactive was able to do with Hitman, a series that Squeenix had so little confidence in they actually let IO buy it (and themselves) back from them. AAA production costs have ballooned across the board. The early Tom Clancy games all sold well (particularly in the late 90s and very early 00's) -- everything I have seen suggested that the later games sold much worse. How many million units did Hitman 3 sell? I've only seen % comparisons vs. Hitman 2.
