CitizenVectron
Russia-Ukraine war live: Zelenskiy signs new mobilisation law in effort to boost Ukraine’s exhausted forces | Ukraine | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Kyiv brings in higher payments for volunteers and new punishments for draft dodgers Ukraine says it 'ran out of missiles' to stop Russian strike destroying power plant Quote A lack of air defence missiles prevented Ukraine from thwarting a Russian missile attack last week that destroyed the biggest power plant in the region around Kyiv, Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said. Trypilska thermal power plant was destroyed in a strike last month. It was the biggest energy facility near Kyiv and was built to have a capacity of 1,800 megawatts, more than the prewar needs of Ukraine's biggest city. Other stations and imports have filled the gap for now but residents have been urged to save power. "There were 11 missiles flying. We destroyed the first seven, and four (remaining) destroyed Trypillia. Why? Because there were zero missiles. We ran out of missiles to defend Trypillia," Zelenskiy said in an interview with PBS. Not sounding good at all. It's not quite as bad as that makes it sound, but the situation certainly is dire. I don't think there are many people that believe Russia is capable of any big breakthroughs along the front, at least for the next few months. They are, however, making small progress in some areas. The bigger issue is that while Ukraine might be able to hold them back for the next year or two (which could potentially exhaust Russia's equipment), they are losing the ability to stop Russian strikes on deep Ukrainian targets (and especially cities near the front, like Kharkiv). Moreso, Ukraine has little hope of regaining the ~20% of the country taken by Russia. The good news is that it appears the US House might finally pass a new aid bill in the next week or two. This new aid should hopefully provide the boost in AA defense and artillery ammo that Ukraine desperately needs. However, the US is still acting incredibly weak and is not allowing Ukraine to use American weapons to strike targets inside Russia itself. How can Ukraine stop missile attacks on Kharkiv if it can't strike the launchers inside Russia?
Commissar SFLUFAN
In some "positive" news... Russia's meat grinder soldiers - 50,000 confirmed dead WWW.BBC.COM In the second 12 months on the front line the body count was nearly 25% higher than in the first year. Quote Russia's military death toll in Ukraine has now passed the 50,000 mark, the BBC can confirm. In the second 12 months on the front line - as Moscow pushed its so-called meat grinder strategy - we found the body count was nearly 25% higher than in the first year. BBC Russian, independent media group Mediazona and volunteers have been counting deaths since February 2022. New graves in cemeteries helped provide the names of many soldiers. Our teams also combed through open-source information from official reports, newspapers and social media. More than 27,300 Russian soldiers died in the second year of combat - according to our findings - a reflection of how territorial gains have come at a huge human cost. Quote The overall death toll - of more than 50,000 - is eight times higher than the only official public acknowledgement of fatality numbers ever given by Moscow in September 2022. The actual number of Russian deaths is likely to be much higher. Our analysis does not include the deaths of militia in Russian-occupied Donetsk and Luhansk - in eastern Ukraine. If they were added, the death toll on the Russian side would be even higher. The loss of so many young men definitely won't exacerbate Russia's deteriorating demographic situation. Nope, not at all!

Russia has proven that can't really intercept many of Ukraine's terrain-guided drones, so the idea is that upon confirmation of Russian strategic bomber takeoffs (warning provided by US), Ukraine can send drones over Russia and then use them to target airborne Russian assets. Most likely not true, but an interesting idea!

CitizenVectron
Just a moment... WWW.POLITICO.COM Quote The Pentagon is preparing to quickly approve a weapons package for Ukraine that includes urgently needed artillery and air defenses as Congress lines up votes to pass additional funding for the country, according to two U.S. officials. Quote Many U.S. weapons are already positioned in stores across Europe that could be pulled immediately for Ukraine, the first official said. Some materiel could reach Ukraine in days; others may take weeks. Quote Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder declined to get into specifics about what will be in any forthcoming package, but told reporters on Thursday that the U.S. has a “very robust logistics network that enables us to move materiel very quickly” – possibly within days.
