Commissar SFLUFAN
ISW analysis for 13 March 2022: Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, March 13 | Institute for the Study of War WWW.UNDERSTANDINGWAR.ORG Russian forces again conducted few ground offensives on March 13, only securing new terrain in Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces predominantly took measures to restore combat readiness and regrouped Quote Russian forces again conducted few ground offensives on March 13, only securing new terrain in Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces predominantly took measures to restore combat readiness and regrouped combat units as of noon local time on March 13.[1] Russian forces continue to assemble reinforcements and attempt to improve logistical support in both the Kyiv and southern operational directions. Russian forces may intend to resume larger-scale attacks on both axes of advance in the coming week, but will likely take longer to (or may never) cohere the combat power necessary to complete the encirclement of Kyiv. Key Takeaways Russian forces did not conduct offensive operations northwest of Kyiv for the third day in a row. Russian forces did not conduct attacks toward northeastern Kyiv and prioritized reinforcing their lines of communication and logistics routes. Russian and proxy forces successfully captured several towns north of Mariupol in Donetsk Oblast on March 13, the only offensive ground actions of the day. Ukrainian protests in occupied Kherson are likely expanding. Russia is diluting its international deployments in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh to reinforce operations in Ukraine and pulling additional forces from Russia’s far east. Ukrainian intelligence reported Russia will deploy preexisting pro-Assad Syrian units to Ukraine, in addition to previously announced plans to recruit new Syrian and Libyan mercenaries. These forces are unlikely to enable Russia to favorably change the balance of forces around Kyiv in the next week but may provide a longer-term pool of low-quality replacements. Russian ballistic missiles killed 35 Ukrainians at the Yavoriv military training center near Poland in a likely effort to interdict Western aid deliveries to Ukraine—following up on the Kremlin’s March 12 announcement it will treat international aid shipments as military targets. It's in China's best interests to see the Russians receive a humiliating defeat in Ukraine, and a subsequent dissolution of the Russian government and military. Probably not going to happen of course, but Xi can dream. In no way does the Chinese leadership even remotely "dream" of this in any way, shape, or form. There is absolutely zero reason for them to physically control any more territory than they already do (sans Taiwan), especially when that would involve confrontation with a still nuclear-armed Russia. They can accomplish the same resource extraction goals from Siberia through economic means.

Commissar SFLUFAN
BY FAR my favorite take on the conflict that I've seen thus far came from a poster on ResetERA who claimed that this was an "inter-Orthodox civil war" that was being fueled by a Western "Catholic/Protestant alliance". For evidence of this "Western Christian Denomination Conspiracy", he pointed out that practically all of the fighting is taking place in the predominantly Orthodox part of the country while the predominantly Greek Catholic part remains relatively unscathed. I, for one, am eagerly awaiting for His Holiness Pope Francis I to declare a Holy Crusade against the satanic Orthodox heresy and end the abomination of 1059 once and for all!

Uaarkson
I think we can all agree that this conflict would not have generated nearly this level of condemnation if it weren’t happening in a “white” “European” nation. And as much as I want to run into the streets and scream about it, I can’t help but feel hypocritical as an American. While Iraqi and Afghani kids spent their teen years fighting to feed themselves while dodging shrapnel, I spent my teen years shooting pretend Afghans and Iraqis on my Xbox.

The important thing is that you fully recognize the moral conundrum that those of us in the Global North -- ESPECIALLY those of us in the United States -- have when discussing this conflict in light of the equally devastating atrocities our governments have committed in "Brown People Countries" since...well, forever.

CayceG
Update on my friends: Most are not being specific with where they have fled to. One family is in Romania. One family is in Germany. One other family and a friend with his girlfriend are bouncing around western Ukraine. Others in the east have gone to smaller villages near their respective families to get away from the cities. There isn't much action out in the countryside. The summer camp we would go to every year has transitioned now into being a refugee center. They're set up for it--they have a kitchen, bath houses, and bunk rooms. The staff at this summer camp are loving and generous and are always immeasurably hospitable to us when we go there. Now they're turning that hospitality and love back to their own people. It warms my heart. They also have a GoFundMe set up to help support the effort financially, if anyone is interested in helping Krayina Mrii.
