Quote Sometimes, there are situations at war when one runs specific operations not to seize terrain or whatever other reason but, ‘merely’ for the purpose of destroying as much of enemy manpower and equipment as possible. Which, hand on heart, is the actual purpose of every war: indeed, the core essence of why wars are fought. Especially at wars as big as this one. It is just so that ‘we’ haven’t fought wars as big as this one for 70+ years. And thus, ‘we’ have forgotten about such requirements. This is becoming obvious when chatting with contacts in Russia, these days. At least one impression is unavoidable: some are so stunned, so surprised by the ‘brazen’ Ukrainian ‘invasion’, they can’t comprehend it. Can’t understand it is happening. This is not only valid for private persons, for veteran officers of the VSRF and the VSK, but for their active commanders too. They’re so much surprised, so much shocked, it’s hard to describe. Alone the realisation this is no ‘raid’, but Ukrainians ‘dare’, ‘invading’, ‘holly Russian land’, have decimated two battalions of the VSRF, sacked much of two VSRF regiments (over 1,000 POWs), much of an FSB company (45 POWs), a battalion of border guards (over 200 POWs… BTW, they are FSB-controlled, too), scared a regiment of the Akhmat into fleeing all the way to Kursk (in addition to capturing up to 50 of them) etc., not to talk about forcing the authorities into an evacuation of more than 80,000 civilians (likely to grow to more than 200,000 in the coming days) is entirely incomprehensible for most of them. The result is a panic and a command system in a state of chaos. In the last few days, it didn’t happen just once a pair of Su-25s has bombed own troops (like in the well-known case on 7 Aug, when a company of the 488th Motor-Rifle Regiment was hit): meanwhile, this is de facto a ‘norm’. The GenStab has no idea where is who, the headquarters of the OSK West and South have no ideas either, and thus the VKS has no idea where are own and where are Ukrainian units. There are so many ‘red-on-red’ clashes, that I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out, the VSRF lost at least as many tanks and troops in this battle to own fire and air strikes, as to Ukrainian fire. Just for example: early this morning (12 August), crews of Ka-52 attack helicopters decimated one of VSRF artillery batteries rushed towards the battlefield from the east (and that at least 15km behind the forward line of contact!). Largest drone attack by Ukraine so far, it seems, and quite deep into Russia. Locals in Russia complained that most drones weren't even shot at—it appears that Russia does not have sufficient air defense in depth, especially for low-flying drones. CitizenVectron Posted August 16 Author Share Posted August 16 Ukraine appears to have destroyed the major bridge connecting a part of Kursk that is under offensive, potentially trapping 700+ Russian soldiers, and a big swath of land. There are still two very small crossings further east, but Ukraine appears to be targeting them as well (and they may not be suitable for armour): Blue is confirmed Ukrainian control, yellow is where advanced troops have gone to (but may not be holding), and the red line is the river that is creating the cauldron. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Commissar SFLUFAN Posted August 18 Share Posted August 18 Ukraine’s offensive derails secret efforts for partial cease-fire with Russia, officials say (Washington Post) Quote Ukraine and Russia were set to send delegations to Doha this month to negotiate a landmark agreement halting strikes on energy and power infrastructure on both sides, diplomats and officials familiar with the discussions said, in what would have amounted to a partial cease-fire and offered a reprieve for both countries. But the indirect talks, with the Qataris serving as mediators and meeting separately with the Ukrainian and Russian delegations, were derailed by Ukraine’s surprise incursion into Russia’s western Kursk region last week, according to the officials. The possible agreement and planned summit have not been previously reported. For more than a year, Russia has pounded Ukraine’s power grid with a barrage of cruise missiles and drone strikes, causing irreparable damage to power stations and rolling blackouts across the country. Meanwhile, Ukraine has struck Russia’s oil facilities with long-range drone attacks that have set ablaze refineries, depots and reservoirs, reducing Moscow’s oil refining by an estimated 15 percent and raising gas prices around the world. Some involved in the negotiations hoped they could lead to a more comprehensive agreement to end the war, according to the officials who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomacy. The willingness to engage in the talks signaled something of a shift for both countries, at least for a limited cease-fire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Kyiv would consider a full cease-fire only if Russia first withdrew all of its troops from Ukrainian land, including the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia invaded and annexed in 2014. Russia’s Vladimir Putin has demanded that Ukraine first cede four Ukrainian regions — including some territory that Russian forces aren’t occupying — that the Kremlin has declared as part of Russia.
