Notice how these news outlets have never ever previously expressed any sort of regret about how they handled things in 2016 until these Trump documents showed up.

Only now do they understand journalistic integrity

A week after the biggest foreign incursion into Russia since World War II, The New York Times visited one of the spots where Ukrainian forces stormed into Russia and surprised the defenders.

Quote

All that remained of a Russian border post was a tableau of destruction: Sheet metal flapped in the wind, customs declarations fluttered about, and stray dogs roamed under a road-spanning sign that said, “Russia.”

Kicking up dust, Ukrainian armored vehicles rumbled past, unimpeded, as the flow of men and weaponry carried on in the biggest foreign incursion into Russia since World War II, an offensive now nearing the end of its first week since the breach of the border here in Sudzha and at several other sites.

At the crossing point, a Ukrainian soldier posted on the roadside waved at the forces passing by, days after Russia’s head of the general staff declared that the attack had been rebuffed.

At the border, the detritus of a losing battle — and signs of soldiers caught by surprise — were scattered about: bullet cartridges tinkled underfoot, discarded body armor lay on the asphalt.

Taking the fight to Russian soil was a weighty moment for Ukraine in its war with Russia, coming two and a half years after Russia launched a full-scale invasion and 10 years after Russia intervened militarily to seize territory and support separatist client states in eastern Ukraine.

Sometimes, there are situations at war when one runs specific operations not to seize terrain or whatever other reason but, ‘merely’ for the purpose of destroying as much of enemy manpower and equipment as possible. Which, hand on heart, is the actual purpose of every war: indeed, the core essence of why wars are fought. Especially at wars as big as this one. It is just so that ‘we’ haven’t fought wars as big as this one for 70+ years. And thus, ‘we’ have forgotten about such requirements.

This is becoming obvious when chatting with contacts in Russia, these days. At least one impression is unavoidable: some are so stunned, so surprised by the ‘brazen’ Ukrainian ‘invasion’, they can’t comprehend it. Can’t understand it is happening. This is not only valid for private persons, for veteran officers of the VSRF and the VSK, but for their active commanders too. They’re so much surprised, so much shocked, it’s hard to describe. Alone the realisation this is no ‘raid’, but Ukrainians ‘dare’, ‘invading’, ‘holly Russian land’, have decimated two battalions of the VSRF, sacked much of two VSRF regiments (over 1,000 POWs), much of an FSB company (45 POWs), a battalion of border guards (over 200 POWs… BTW, they are FSB-controlled, too), scared a regiment of the Akhmat into fleeing all the way to Kursk (in addition to capturing up to 50 of them) etc., not to talk about forcing the authorities into an evacuation of more than 80,000 civilians (likely to grow to more than 200,000 in the coming days) is entirely incomprehensible for most of them.

The result is a panic and a command system in a state of chaos. In the last few days, it didn’t happen just once a pair of Su-25s has bombed own troops (like in the well-known case on 7 Aug, when a company of the 488th Motor-Rifle Regiment was hit): meanwhile, this is de facto a ‘norm’. The GenStab has no idea where is who, the headquarters of the OSK West and South have no ideas either, and thus the VKS has no idea where are own and where are Ukrainian units. There are so many ‘red-on-red’ clashes, that I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out, the VSRF lost at least as many tanks and troops in this battle to own fire and air strikes, as to Ukrainian fire. Just for example: early this morning (12 August), crews of Ka-52 attack helicopters decimated one of VSRF artillery batteries rushed towards the battlefield from the east (and that at least 15km behind the forward line of contact!).

This morning on BBC News Hour the reporter was saying that he was hearing of Ukrainian troops on their second and third rotations into the seized territory. I’m shocked that their logistics are so coordinated.

If that's truly the case, then I'm utterly floored by it!

Planned in secrecy, the incursion was a bold move to upend the war’s dynamics and put Moscow on the defensive — a gambit that could also leave Ukraine exposed.

The scenes were decidedly Russian. A Gazprom facility. Flags with the country’s signature three horizontal stripes of white, blue and red. A Pyatyorochka supermarket.

The soldiers posting the videos, verified by The New York Times, were Ukrainian, almost giddily showing off just how easily they had pushed over the border and through Russian lines of defense in the past week.

In the Russian town of Sverdlikovo, a Ukrainian soldier climbed onto another’s shoulders, broke off the wooden post anchored to a town council building and threw the Russian flag to the ground. In Daryino, a town five miles to the west, other soldiers also grabbed a Russian flag. “Just throw it away,” a Ukrainian soldier said, grinning, as another flexed his muscles.

Last night Ukraine attacked three airfields in Russia, one as far as 500 miles in, with at least 117 drones. Largest drone attack by Ukraine so far, it seems, and quite deep into Russia. Locals in Russia complained that most drones weren't even shot at—it appears that Russia does not have sufficient air defense in depth, especially for low-flying drones.

Because all their air defense is in Ukraine :daydream:

Is it wrong that I'm finding this low-key hysterical?

Not at all! Surely this strategy is as much, if not mostly, about psyops as it is about any military targets of value. In a world where the US Presidential election, Middle East conflict, and Hurricane season are dominating the news cycle, Ukraine needed attention back on them and this, its seems, is working!

Ukraine appears to have destroyed the major bridge connecting a part of Kursk that is under offensive, potentially trapping 700+ Russian soldiers, and a big swath of land. There are still two very small crossings further east, but Ukraine appears to be targeting them as well (and they may not be suitable for armour):

Blue is confirmed Ukrainian control, yellow is where advanced troops have gone to (but may not be holding), and the red line is the river that is creating the cauldron.

  • CitizenVectron changed the title to Россия invades Україна | UPDATE (16 August 2024) - Ukraine destroys the Glushkovo bridge in Kursk, potentially trapping 700+ Russian soldiers in cauldron

Most likely what happens is that Ukraine will push from the west (with artillery support from their border to the south), forcing the Russian troops to cross north of the river on foot (also hopefully abandoning artillery/armour). Either that or the Russians will be forced to surrender.

Ukraine’s offensive derails secret efforts for partial cease-fire with Russia, officials say (Washington Post)

Quote

Ukraine and Russia were set to send delegations to Doha this month to negotiate a landmark agreement halting strikes on energy and power infrastructure on both sides, diplomats and officials familiar with the discussions said, in what would have amounted to a partial cease-fire and offered a reprieve for both countries.

But the indirect talks, with the Qataris serving as mediators and meeting separately with the Ukrainian and Russian delegations, were derailed by Ukraine’s surprise incursion into Russia’s western Kursk region last week, according to the officials. The possible agreement and planned summit have not been previously reported.

For more than a year, Russia has pounded Ukraine’s power grid with a barrage of cruise missiles and drone strikes, causing irreparable damage to power stations and rolling blackouts across the country. Meanwhile, Ukraine has struck Russia’s oil facilities with long-range drone attacks that have set ablaze refineries, depots and reservoirs, reducing Moscow’s oil refining by an estimated 15 percent and raising gas prices around the world.

Some involved in the negotiations hoped they could lead to a more comprehensive agreement to end the war, according to the officials who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomacy.

The willingness to engage in the talks signaled something of a shift for both countries, at least for a limited cease-fire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Kyiv would consider a full cease-fire only if Russia first withdrew all of its troops from Ukrainian land, including the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia invaded and annexed in 2014. Russia’s Vladimir Putin has demanded that Ukraine first cede four Ukrainian regions — including some territory that Russian forces aren’t occupying — that the Kremlin has declared as part of Russia.

Quote

A diplomat briefed on the talks said Russian officials postponed their meeting with Qatari officials after Ukraine’s incursion into western Russia. Moscow’s delegation described it as “an escalation,” the diplomat said, adding that Kyiv did not warn Doha about its cross-border offensive.

Russia “didn’t call off the talks, they said give us time,” the diplomat said. Though Ukraine wanted to send its delegation to Doha anyway, the person said, Qatar declined because it did not see a one-sided meeting as beneficial. The small Arab country has positioned itself as a powerful mediator in recent years and has hosted ongoing talks aimed at ending the war in Gaza.

Quote

The diplomat briefed on the talks said Kyiv and Moscow had both signaled their readiness to accept the arrangement in the lead-up to the summit. But senior officials in Kyiv had mixed expectations about whether the negotiations could succeed, with some putting the odds at 20 percent and others anticipating even worse prospects, according to two people familiar with the talks, even if the Kursk assault had not happened. But the planned talks and potential agreement — now on hold — raise the stakes for Zelensky’s gamble.

Quote

But while Kyiv might have improved its future negotiating position with the land grab, the likelihood of imminent peace talks appears diminished. Putin publicly vowed this week not to soften his position on negotiations because of the assault on Russian territory.

The diplomat familiar with the talks said that Qatar has been discussing the arrangement for an energy strike moratorium with Kyiv and Moscow for the past two months. The official said the two sides agreed to a summit in Doha with just minor details left to be worked out.

“After Kursk, the Russians balked,” another person familiar with the talks said.

A Russian academic with close ties to senior Russian diplomats signaled that Putin would not be in the mood to make a deal after the Kursk offensive.

“You know our Russian leadership usually does not make any compromises under pressure,” the person said.
