Fizzzzle
After 30 years of mostly living in Portland, I'm done. It's been real, I love a lot of things about it, but it's time to go. I've been feeling this way for a couple years, I only stayed for my (now ex) girlfriend. That relationship went over like a hot fart in a space suit as soon as I started posting here again. Correlation or causation? Who knows. A couple million people live here, and yet there are far too many people that I have far too much history with that I see far too often. It feels like a small town to me. Thankfully I ply a trade that can be done anywhere for basically the same amount of money, so it's not a big deal to move. Any of you have experience just throwing everything away and moving? Right now the plan is to move once concerts are a thing again. That's basically my signal that the service economy is normalizing again and I can find work in a pinch, so just moving without a job isn't a big deal. I'm planning on just moving somewhere with about maybe 3 months rent stored just in case (not necessary, though) Right now the top destination is New Orleans. It isn't cold and it's cheaper than Portland. That's basically my criteria.

CastlevaniaNut18
I’d like to get the fuck out of Arkansas. Colorado always seemed nice. But I’m terrible at change and this is all I’ve ever known. Well, I did get out of the awful rural area and into a city, but still. Also, I’d dread moving all my books and our game collection.

I dont know if I would call it throwing everything away but several years ago I lost my long time job. My wife convinced me to sell the house and move away. We sold the house before I had a new job, luckily I found a new one but I had to travel to the new area and find a apartment in 1 day. Some how everything worked out, and for the better.

TheLeon
I’ve bounced between points in flyover country a couple of times in my adult life, with only one or two carloads of shit. It’s doable. It helps to have someone reliable in your destination city that can help you out. I don’t know how easily I could sell you on Cincinnati, but I’m pretty happy here. My grandparents lived in Troy. Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Also, family in the area. Hard pass. Cincinnati does sound like a fun city, though

I've found that for most things, it's cheaper to just get rid of all your shit and buy new furniture than it is to move old furniture. Of course games and things that have value are a different story, but unless you packed it into a u-haul, you'd spend a dumb amount of money moving them. My game collection would be far too expensive to replace. I figure we'd just pack down a u-haul. I'd be less concerned with having to buy new furniture. Brian
I think about moving to the south and living next to the ocean. Then I think about having to interact with people from the south and decide I rather deal with the cold.

Fizzzzle
I used to think I could never stand the humidity. Then I spent a few months in thailand. It really wasn't a big deal after a few weeks. I've never gotten used to the cold. The humidity I can adapt to.

You're better off moving to Austin, San Antonio, Hilton Head, or Savanah. If you're in to college towns you could move to Athens. Lots of surprisingly high end restaurants, dope ass music scene, and you can rent a 4br house for a $1000/month.
gamer.tv
I moved from one tiny island to a larger one and I’ve moved twice with my wife to live in different parts of the country. I’ve lived it and set myself up straight away by joining a local rugby team which instantly gave me a group of people to socialise with. That would be my only advice - invest in a hobby early if you can (COVID depending).

Dodger
Moved from so cal to AZ almost 3 years ago. But I got to keep my job and got a relocation bonus so I didn’t have to worry about that part. Cost of living wise it’s been worth it. I don’t mind AZ but it’s fucking hot here half the year. Because of the bonus I didn’t bring any furniture just bought new stuff when I got here. Remember that you could spend a pretty penny shipping your stuff hundreds or thousands of miles so it’s only worth it if you have nice stuff. Hardest part was leaving behind friends and family, but you’re a bartender right? So you shouldn’t have any problems meeting people. Worst part will be missing your family, if you’re close to them. I eventually bought a house in The beginning of the boonies for a price that just isn’t happening in CA, so that’s been the advantage for me. Only culture shock coming from a lib state is that white people love their guns here, and it’s one of those places where weirdos open carry to Walmart. But I’ve only seen that a handful of times. Oh and no motorcycle lane splitting is wonderful too, fuck all that.
