A man is dead after being shot by police after several schools were forced into lockdown in Toronto Thursday following reports of a person in the area with a rifle.

Toronto police said they were called to the area near Maberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road in Port Union shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Police said they located the man, who they described as in his late teens or early 20s, wearing a white ball hat and a three-quarter length coat.

Officers shot the man and paramedics are on the scene, police say.

Police were initially called to Maberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road for reports of a person carrying a rifle on the street around 1 p.m.

About 20 minutes later, paramedics were called to the corner of Lawrence Avenue East and Port Union Road for a reported shooting.

Police said an officer discharged a firearm at the suspect, striking the man at least once.

Another witness told CP24 that they heard "three rapid shots" and then saw officers attempt to revive a male on the sidewalk.

That witness told CP24 officers told him they were searching for a male on a bicycle with a rifle in the area.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the agency responsible for investigating circumstances involving police that have resulted in a death or serious injury, has confirmed they have invoked their mandate following Thursday's incident.

I was just coming to post this too. I’ve driven by that school a few times when delivering racks/glides around the Walmarts in the area.

FUCK!!!!!

Our Freedom Convoy Truckers should get some of the blame for what’s happening as well. They showed up to protest Trudeau with a Mike Pence Noose and so they canceled his appearance. I know people have the right to protest but if you’re going fucking show up with a noose, you get the cuffs too.

My son's school is only single entrance after the first bell rings. When dropping him off in the morning, kids get dropped off at the fire exit closest to their classrooms. There are teachers at each door welcoming in their kids with aids lining them up in the hallway. Once the bell rings, the fire exits are closed, and the only way in is being buzzed through the front door. That also keeps the lines from getting too long since kids are entering the school from all sides.

That's how it is here. Once school starts you need to be buzzed in, but there multiple doors you can open with a fob.

A man who walked onto the campus of an Arlington elementary school Thursday morning with a loaded gun in his waistband and was injured when it accidentally went off is now facing a criminal charge, police say.

Good guy with a gun.

How do single entry schools even work for outdoor schools? Like I grew up where the weather never sucked and went to one indoor school in my life. The rest were just outdoor quads with at best a chain link fence around the perimeter. So you get on campus and could just walk to any class you wanted to. Not sure how you secure that unless you just completely redesign the schools and start putting up walls everywhere.

it wouldn’t stop anything at an outdoor school (most of the schools in california). you’d have to put up fences around the school that would be impossible to climb. i think almost all the schools at least around me have a fence around them but they’re definitely something a person can climb as long as they are not 60 years old and or obese

That whole police and SWAT force needs to be terminated and replaced with men and women with some balls. Parents and bystanders were screaming and pleading with them to engage this kid and did nothing. Incomprehensible.

It needs to go beyond mere termination.

There should be Federal and state investigations as to whether actual criminal negligence occurred.

I don't understand how there isn't criminal negligence here. The police got to the school and engaged the kid for twelve minutes outside of the school. Why isn't every classroom being locked down the minute the police get the 911 call from grandma that lead to the police rushing there? Shit, twelve minutes should be enough to enter lockdown. How does the terrorist get into a classroom with a door that locks so tight it takes police almost an hour to find a faculty member with a key to get the door open?

I feel like the parents would have done a better job than these cowards.

They did, as some went into the school and actually came out with alive kids. While the cops watched helplessly with their guns in the parking lot, while cuffing distraught parents who also wanted to do the cops job. Minus the guns, equipment and “training”

Not to be disrespectful of those in law enforcement that do put it all on the line on a daily basis… there are definitely many instances where you see a person with a badge who gives off the appearance of being unlikely to be dependable if something serious were to happen… who like the “funny” commercial is just there to radio in the people who will take action..

There is an expectation of those gentlemen and if they failed they should be held accountable.. its part of our societal contract

Sooo many questions… a true timeline is needed to understand why this school didnt lock down fast enough… WE MUST pull some lessons out of this tragedy beyond the usual arguments over weapons
