foosh
Some people I know are staying at hotels here. Hotels have run out of food. Restaurants and grocery stores nearby have also run out. Searching for food is interesting right now if you aren’t stocked up

mclumber1
I'm fine with privately operated/owned power plants (with appropriate regulation), but it's probably best that the grid be owned by the government.

I wonder, is there any appetite from Texas politicians to force utilities to build and maintain massive and expensive holding tanks? Because I can guarantee they won't do this on their own. This is a textbook case of why strong regulation is required in any free market. The market will do the least effort possible to keep things running unless it is forced to put extra safeguards in place. There should be reserve storage tanks for these plants, as well as winterized facilities. More than that, though, there should be additional plants that are not relied on, but are in place to be brought online in high-load situations. This is the future. Much of our regular power will come from solar and wind (and other green sources), but we will always need back-up sources to supplement green power when the load is high or generation is low. But owning idle plants isn't profitable, which is why they need to be owned by the government. But that is just offloading costs (and keeping regular profits private), so the real solution is nationalizing all power generation and delivery. Littleronin
Have we got to the one about how a, I guess now former mayor, told people that they just need to pull up there bootstraps as nobody owes them anything at this time. Texas Mayor Publicly Abandons His Town To Winter Disaster: The City ‘Owes You NOTHING!’ WWW.MEDIAITE.COM Now-former Mayor Tim Boyd gave his entire town the kiss-off in the midst of a winter disaster in Texas that has left millions without power in freezing temperatures, telling residents that "The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!" Quote Let me hurt some feelings while I have a minute!! No one owes you are your family anything; nor is it the local government’s responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim it’s your choice! The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING! I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout! If you don’t have electricity you step up and come up with a game plan to keep your family warm and safe. If you have no water you deal without and think outside of the box to survive and supply water to your family. If you are sitting at home in the cold because you have no power and are sitting there waiting for someone to come rescue you because your lazy is direct result of your raising! Only the strong will survive and the weak will parish. Folks God has given us the tools to support ourselves in times like this. This is sadly a product of a socialist government where they feed people to believe that the FEW will work and others will become dependent for handouts. Am I sorry that you have been dealing without electricity and water; yes! But I’ll be damned if I’m going to provide for anyone that is capable of doing it themselves! We have lost sight of those in need and those that take advantage of the system and meshed them in to one group!! Bottom line quit crying and looking for a handout! Get off your ass and take care of your own family! Bottom line-DONT A PART OF PROBLEM, BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!

CitizenVectron
Situation isn't really improving: Also: How about instead of "incentivizing" a private company to keep live-saving power flowing by gouging people (hey, you want to stay alive or prevent your home from being destroyed? Pay us $3,000 for power this month), you fucking just order them to do it.

Man alive, I just checked my bill for the last 30 days and it was $166 for 1700ish kWh. The usage is higher than normal due to our house being electric heating as the alternative here is propane and it was a ton more expensive. CitizenVectron
Just checked my power bill for last month, and I used 492 kWh for a cost of $101.06. This also includes a carbon tax (which is refunded at the end of the year from the government): Days: 28 Electricity: $92.79 (base $22.79) Municipal charge: $9.60 Economic Recovery Rebate: -$9.28 GST: $4.64 Carbon Tax: $3.15 Carbon Tax GST: $0.16 So the actual cost per kWh is $0.14228 ($0.11 USD)
